Message from our Principal

Dear ISD Parents,

We are having another Lockdown Drill per the recent request by central office to hold a second one before the end of this school year. It is scheduled for this Tuesday, May 7th in the afternoon. We will follow procedures established by the district in conjunction with our Security Director. Teachers will discuss with students that this is a drill and practice, similar to our monthly fire drills. You may want to reinforce that message with your children as well.

Some students will be participating in the administration of standardized tests in the next few weeks. Our second graders will take the spring version of the Degrees of Reading Power Test on Thursday, May 9th. You may recall they took this reading test in the fall. The test is comprised of non-fiction reading passages that start simply and progressively get much longer and more difficult. We should get the results just before the end of this school year. The spring results are especially helpful, as they yield information regarding progress in reading for virtually one school year.

Third and fourth graders will participate in a pilot testing program for the new state test (SBAC) they will be take in 2015. We will not receive the results but the information will help the test developers who are creating the new tests. Students will be chosen randomly to take either one reading or one math test which will be completed on the computer. The experience will also help us in assessing the ability to have large groups of students take computer-based assessments in the computer lab.

Our first graders will have their artwork displayed at the Cos Cob Library beginning Monday, May 6th. We have a very artistic group of students so if you frequent this library branch, please take some time to admire their work. In fact, one of our grade one students had a piece of her artwork selected by the Long Island Sound Foundation Calendar Award to be included in their 2014 calendar.

Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week, along with Nurse Appreciation Week. I want to take this opportunity to say on behalf of Mrs. Finnegan and myself, that we are truly appreciative of the staff we have at ISD. Besides being well-trained in their chosen profession, they have a strong work ethic and a passion to bring out the best in your children. They are in excellent hands!

Sincerely,

Terry Ricci

ARTSONIA PHOTO EDITORS NEEDED
ABORIGINALPAINTING - JAMES

Please consider volunteering for ISD's Artsonia virtual art gallery!

Help is needed to crop & enhance artwork using iphoto on Mac or basic photo editing tool on a PC. It is easy and requires basic computer knowledge. Mrs. Verdier will train you and be available for any questions or assistance.

Editing artwork is a volunteer job that busy parents can do from home. Commitment is only about 1 hour a week...day and time of your choice!

Thank you!
