From the Principal

Dear ISD Parents,

As of this writing the administration of this spring's CMT appears to be going smoothly.  Each morning students are taking a test and will do so through next week.  Please continue to have them get plenty of sleep, eat a good breakfast and arrive to school on time.  Every attempt will be made to administer make up tests to students who are absent and miss a test before testing materials are required to be sent back.

Report cards will be issued to all students for the second trimester next Friday, March 15th.  Grades issued for each subject area represent learning of content objectives that were instructed during this time period.  If there are concerns related to your child's learning, your child's teacher should be in touch with you.  If you have concerns, please initiate contact with the teacher to address them.

Next Tuesday, March 12th, a parent meeting will be held at the Board of Education to cover the topic of Common Core Standards.  The meeting will be held from 10-12.  These standards, which are to be fully implemented in 2015, represent a major shift in how and why instruction will be delivered.  These standards, which were written toward the goal of making every student, College and Career Ready, will replace local and state standards which have been driving our instruction.  The staff and I are preparing for this shift through our professional development program this year.  Although I will be sharing much more information about the standards in the near future, I urge you to attend this meeting if you are available.

Sincerely, Terry Ricci

FRUIT & VEGGIE CHALLENGE

The PTA Wellness Committee is proud to present the

2013 Fruit and Vegetable Challenge

Tuesday, March 12 - Friday, March 15

The children in each grade will be served two fresh fruits or veggies during their lunch period.  A chart will be sent home in students' folders for them to log all the fruits and veggies they consume for a week, with a goal of five or more servings a day.  At the end of the week the children return their logs to school thus entering their names in a raffle for a fun prize.

The Challenge is a wonderful way to promote
healthy eating habits for our children.
 BAND NEWS

Combined Band Rehearsal

Monday, March 11 at 7:30 am

As a reminder, we will be holding our first (of 3) combined 4th/5th grade band rehearsal next Monday, March 11 at 7:30am.

Please drop your children off in the front circle, near the music room door (2nd to last). I will be available between 7:20-7:30am to let them in. If students arrive late, they may need to wait by the front entrance for a staff member to let them in, so please try to arrive on time.

The two other Monday rehearsals are on April 8 & May 6.

As a reminder, students who miss more than one of these 3 crucial full band rehearsals (for reasons other than illness) may not participate in the spring concert.

Also, for the weeks of March 11 and April 8, there will be no regular 5th grade Friday band rehearsal (but there will still be lessons). For the week of May 6, there will be a Friday 5th grade band rehearsal as well.

Greenwich High School Jazz Ensemble

Thursday, March 14th from 6-7:30pm

Glenville School

The event is FREE and open to all Greenwich elementary school students and their families.

Please try to encourage your children to attend the Greenwich High School Jazz Ensemble performance next Thursday evening. This really is a fantastic opportunity for your young musicians to experience a remarkable group, comprised of students not much older than your own! The informal setting and question & answer session will provide them with some insight into the possibilities ahead of them in the Greenwich Public Schools music program.

I hope to see you there.   Michael Strange, Band Teacher
