From the Principal
Dear ISD Parents,
Next week, Thursday, March 7th, is the deadline for submitting nominations for the Distinguished Teacher Awards. There are several rules regarding the process, including, if someone has already been a recipient of the award, they cannot be nominated again. Also, there is a time requirement regarding employment in the district which would need to be verified. All teachers, both classroom and specialty, qualify for the distinction. We have many deserving teachers and if you are considering nominating someone, please let me know and I would be happy to assist you.
The last two weeks at ISD have seen a focus on the art of writing. Writing Consultant, Mr. D, was here last week to work with students in grades three through five. Mr. D reinforces the writing process the teachers cover in their instruction all year, but adds a dramatic and memorable flair to it. This week, students in grades two through five visited author, Dan Gutman, through technology and the art of skyping. Each grade level session was informative, as well as entertaining, for the students.
Thank you to the PTA for providing these events which instilled a lot of motivation in our students. Hopefully, this motivation will carry them through the CMT process which our third through fifth graders will begin on Tuesday, 3/5. In fact, the first test they will take is the Writing Prompt. The testing schedule is on our school's website if you wish to view it. Teachers have been preparing students for these tests in recent weeks and we are confident they are ready. Although these are high stakes tests, we are doing our best not to increase anyone's anxiety level. Please provide support at home by encouraging your child to put forth their best effort.
On Thursday, Feb. 28th, the entire school came together to celebrate our former crossing guard's, retirement and 95th birthday. "Miss Lee", as we have come to affectionately call her, retired from her crossing guard's position in September. In addition, she worked in our cafeteria as a substitute monitor, voluntarily watered our plants and took care of other things, all with genuine caring for our school community. The celebration was heartwarming and she was truly touched. Thank you for supporting your children in making cards, bringing in flowers, etc.
Sincerely, Terry Ricci |

The PTA Wellness Committee is proud to present the
2013 Fruit and Vegetable Challenge
Tuesday, March 12 - Friday, March 15
The children in each grade will be served two fresh fruits or veggies during their lunch period. A chart will be sent home in students' folders for them to log all the fruits and veggies they consume for a week, with a goal of five or more servings a day. At the end of the week the children return their logs to school thus entering their names in a raffle for a fun prize.
Volunteers are needed during all lunch periods to cut and serve fruit. Please contact Elisabeth Weindling to volunteer.
The Challenge is a wonderful way to promote
healthy eating habits for our children. |

GHS JAZZ ENSEMBLE | |

I am very pleased to announce that the Greenwich High School Jazz Ensemble, led by Mr. John Yoon, will be returning for a performance at Glenville School on:
Thursday, March 14th from 6-7:30pm
The event is FREE and open to all Greenwich elementary school students and their families. Mark your calendars!
In addition to performing, Mr. Yoon and the members of the jazz ensemble will take questions from students in the audience. This event is a great way for your child to experience, up close & personal, the musical opportunities available to them in just a few years here in Greenwich.
I hope to see you there. Michael Strange, Band Teacher |

GREEN DRAGON
UPDATE | |
We all want cleaner air to breathe. The quickest way to cut down on air pollution is super easy, too. Don't let your car idle for more than 30 seconds. Beyond wasting fuel, excessive idling strains cylinders, spark plugs, exhaust sytems and engines, which all work best in motion - not neutral. The best way to warm up the car? Drive it. You'll save gas and reduce emissions by up to 60 percent. |
