Dear ISD Parents,

We have been monitoring our absentee rate closely this week and am happy to say that at this point in time, we have not seen an increase in absences as a result of the flu.  Although there are some absences with reported flu-like symptoms, we have had absentee numbers of under 20 students per day this week.  This, in a school with a population of 375, in the middle of January is a very good rate. Teachers are constantly reminding students to wash their hands and cough/sneeze in their elbow as opposed to their hands.  The custodial crew is also doing a great job of keeping desktops, door handles and banisters clean with frequent cleaning.  Also, thank you to parents for keeping sick students home through a period of time that they no longer demonstrate any symptoms at all.  Please continue to call the office to inform us of who is absent and the reason for their absence.  It takes all of us working together and being diligent in keeping everyone as healthy as possible.

This week was a busy, fruitful week.  Our grade 4 art show was held earlier in the week and we had a terrific showing.  The students were proud to showcase their artwork and more importantly, speak to the artistic process they engaged in to complete them.

I held my first information session this week for prospective ISD families,  We had an excellent turnout of people who are possibly interested in applying to our school next year.  I will have another session next week, Tues., 1/22, at 7 pm.  If you know of anyone who may be interested in applying, please let them know of the upcoming session.  If you are a magnet family and have an incoming kindergartner or a child in another grade who you would like to have attend our school next year, please complete an application.  The deadline date is March 1st.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

Finally, we held Math Night last night where we had a wonderful turnout.  Students and parents were invited to participate in playing math games to reinforce concepts, skills and facts.  Teachers were there to facilitate the activity.  Everyone seemed to have fun and learning at the same time.

Speaking of math and learning, here is a reminder to parents about accessing two computer software programs from home to provide math enrichment and/or practice.  Study Island is for students in grades 3, 4 and 5 while IXL is for all students.  A little extra practice now and then will reap benefits for those students who will be taking the CMTs later on in the spring.

Sincerely, Terry Ricci
