Dear ISD Parents and Guardians,

This week and in the next few weeks, all of you will be participating in conferences where you will have the opportunity to meet with your child's teacher to review their progress to date.  It is an important time to listen, take notes and ask questions specific to their learning, work habits, etc.  You will also be issued their report card where teachers have indicated your child's achievement level for each standard in every subject area.  The grading scale uses numbers 1-5 where a 3 indicates they are meeting grade level expectations. These grades reflect their learning on skills and content taught through the first trimester.  It is important to review this information with your child and their age and grade level should determine how it is done.  It is a wonderful opportunity to include them in a conversation on the importance of their education, celebrate their accomplishments and discuss areas that can be improved upon which could include goal setting.

In addition, students in grades two through five will receive their Degrees of Reading Power Test results which was administered in September.  The DRP is a standardized reading test administered to students in grades two through five in the fall and again in the spring.  The test consists of non-fiction reading passages that start simply and increase in difficulty.  Typically, we see lower scores in the fall which could be a result of students not reading during the summer months.  The teachers and I review individual student results, as well as grade level and school results.  Students in grade three will also receive results reports on the other standardized tests they took in September, including the SAT and the OLSAT.  I will be scheduling a meeting in January to help you in translating what your child's score means and to share overall school results. Please look for further details in a future issue of Dragon Tales.

The school district is looking for parent volunteers to serve on a committee which will be looking at our math curriculum and the materials used to teach it. Given the curriculum now includes expectations related to the Common Core Standards, it is important to determine if current instructional materials align with these standards. If you are interested in being considered for this committee, please see the district's website for the application. Applications are due Dec. 7th.

We have been extremely short handed with the office staff. As you know, Mrs. Miloro who worked in our office for many years, was promoted to a different role at Hamilton Avenue School. Her replacement is Lori White, a former ISD Parent, who is transferring from another school. She starts on Mon., Dec. 10th.  In addition, Mrs. Scott has been out this week and all of next week to deal with a family emergency. Ms. Machnicki is helping us out in the meantime, for which I am very grateful.

Lastly, I want to remind you that when your child is tardy, he or she must stop in the office to let us know they are here.  Teachers complete their attendance at 8:45 and if a child is marked absent but they arrive tardy, it needs to be corrected in the office.  If that doesn't happen, your child's record will reflect an absence instead of a tardy.  Please try to have your children arrive before 8:45 to not only avoid this from happening but so they are here to start their instructional day which begins at 8:45.

Sincerely, Terry Ricci

CHARACTER CORNER

No better time to say thank you then at the end of November --- the month of giving thanks.

Therefore, without further ado, the Character Corner would like to acknowledge and thank the following:

Cameron & Gavin O., Ashton & Julia M., and Shyam & Faiz R. for their work at Breezy Point.  These children and their families helped to fill a truck and a van with cleaning supplies, sump pumps and industrial brooms, headed south to Breezy Point, New York and then tirelessly helped to clean a Queens neighborhood devastated by Hurricane Sandy.  The group cleaned trash and debris and pumped water out of flooded basements. They (with help from their families and neighbors) also collected enough funds to purchase a $1,300 Home Depot donation/gift. We are so proud of all of you!!

Demi & William J, Aiden K., Emanuel L., Gracie M., Cameron O., Abby P., Shyam R., John R., Zach S., Isabella S., Benjamin S., Maruca S., George W., Marcella W. and Melinda Y. for raising $500 during their bake sale.  The money raised will benefit 125 children at their partner school in Rwanda Those children will now get pencils for an entire year.  Job well done!

Cali Wulff for participating in a 4k jog  (with her puppy) to raise money for STAR (Stamford Animal Rescue stamfordanimalrescue.org).  Star is a non-profit organization that helps families going through financial and/or medical hardship purchase pet food, veterinary care and provides them with emergency shelter.Amazing job, Cali!

The entire third grade for hosting the Helping Hands Community Service Project benefiting those impacted by Hurricane Sandy.  Thanks to the third grade and to all the children who performed chores at home, over $2000 will be donated to the Red Cross.  Excellent job!

After clearing expenses, we now have $1,650 to split in half for The Juveniles Diabetes Research Center in honor of Zoe S. and The Leukemia Society in honor of Nicole G.  We cannot thank you enough for all your help in making this years Note Card drive such a success. The money we send to them will hopefully help find a cure for both illnesses soon.  (The note cards should be arriving within the next couple of weeks.)

Big thanks to:

Emanuel L. for volunteering at the Pacific House on Thanksgiving Day by serving dinner to the homeless.  Emanuel, it is no surprise to us that your kind act inevitably brought smiles to the faces of so many people.  Job well done.

Cameron D. for raising over two hundred dollars for the victims of Hurricane Sandy by hosting a hot chocolate stand.  Cameron will be donating the money to the American Red Cross and we couldn't be more proud of him and his very hard and unselfish work.  Great job, Cameron.

Kylie N. for being a caring and principled young lady by offering a very cold and "under the weather" teacher a hot chocolate.  Kylie, your kindness was truly appreciated and very helpful.  Thank you!
