School Spirit Pajama Day!

Dear ISD Parents and Guardians,

It is safe to say that we have returned to our "normal routine", here at school and hope the same for you at home.  In fact, we are as busy as ever.  Yesterday, we had a literacy consultant, Ginny Lockwood, who has worked in many of the schools in Greenwich, spend the day working with our teachers in kindergarten and grades one and two.  Her work with the teachers included professional development on the topic of small group instruction, which is the crux of our academic school improvement goal.  (Please see the school's website for our goals.)  Mrs. Lockwood worked with students demonstrating two kinds of instructional practices within small group instruction while the teachers observed her.   Prior to the observations, they discussed the features to look for and afterwards, they debriefed on what they observed during a Q and A session.  I also had the opportunity to sit in on some of those sessions and was impressed with the amount of new learning that was occurring.  She will return again in January to work with teachers in grades three, four and five.

We had a moving Veteran's Day Ceremony on Monday.  Our fifth graders presented
a variety of tributes, which served as a reminder for all of us the significance of the day.  Along with the music and coming together as a school, it was a wonderful event.

If you have dropped your children off and/or picked them up at school, then you may have seen our new landscaping. Members of the Dept. of Parks and Recreation completed the planting of new shrubs, grasses, etc. Wendy Dye, one of own parents, helped in the design process. I want to thank Wendy for sharing her expertise and time toward this project. In addition, you may have also seen our new benches. The benches are courtesy of a class gift by last year's fifth graders. Emma Eschricht, an ISD parent, worked hard at researching and purchasing them. Thank you to Emma for doing the legwork.

I have received some comments lately that traffic around the school has increased significantly.  I want to remind parents when dropping off, to pull in as far up as the mid point of the front circle and be sure your children are ready to exit the car with their belongings.  (They can exit anywhere along a green cone.)  Conversely, in the afternoon, we remind students to be looking for their cars so they can proceed to their car if it is along a green cone.   If you are picking up, it is best to arrive between 3:20-3:25.  Remember the buses need to exit the circle first before cars can start picking up students.

I want to take this opportunity to wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving, as we take the time to give thanks and be grateful for what we have.

Sincerely, Terry Ricci

Thank you from Riverside PTA

We came together as a community and the generosity and enthusiasm of the entire town surpassed our high expectations.  With just a day's notice and a

one-day window for collecting, we were able to donate as follows:

8 carloads of food and clothing to Neighbor 2 Neighbor

6 large bags of coats to a local coat drive

2 U-Haul trucks full of cleaning supplies, hygiene supplies, and coats that we delivered to two points of relief in Long Beach, Long Island

$3500 to the Red Cross, directed to areas of greatest need

The Riverside School PTA proudly made these donations on behalf of the Town of Greenwich.  Thanks to everyone who helped to make this effort a success.

Welcome to The Green Dragon

Lighting accounts for about 20 percent of the average home's electric bill. With all of us "falling back" for Daylight Savings Time, here are some tips to help control our lighting costs and save money on our electricity bills.
Replace incandescent lightbulbs with energy efficient compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs), which use 75% less energy.
Open your shades and let the sun provide free lighting instead of automatically turning lights on during the day.
Adopt a family rule to turn off lights when not in use.
