Dear ISD Parents and Guardians,
I want to begin by thanking the PTA for supporting the partnerships we have in place for each of the grade levels. This week we saw the culminating event our third graders experienced through their partnership with the CT Ballet Company. Since mid-September, our third graders have been working under the guidance of Mr. Brett Raphael, Artistic Director of CT Ballet and Ms. Jessica Davila, Professional Dancer. Combined with their music, artistic representations of the story fables and their costumes, the audience witnessed a real celebration of their learning. The learning occurred throughout the process for them as they learned about dance, working together, timing while applying their creative juices. Congratulations to the students, their teachers, parents and everyone who made the event so special.
The teachers and I have finalized the School's Improvement Plan which includes two goals. The academic goal will continue to focus on literacy instruction and the use of non-fiction materials. We saw a positive response in the spring CMT reading scores and hope to build on that trend. The emphasis will be on professional development for the teachers in refining educational practices such as small group instruction. The non-academic goal will focus on the integration of the district's Safe School Norms with the IB Learner Profiles. The norms (Be Here, Be Safe, Be Honest, Care for Self and Others and Let Go and Move On) complement our Learner Profiles. The district developed these norms in response to the state's law on bullying which looks to develop safer school climates in a proactive stance to diminish bullying. Please look for the entire School Improvement Plan on the school's website shortly.
Throughout this school year, please look for information regarding the Common Core Standards which our state, along with 45 others, have adopted. The Greenwich Public Schools curriculum areas already reflect many of these new standards which represent a basic foundational skill level. Of course, our district always looks to aim for the "ceiling" when learning and instruction are involved so we will be approaching the standards as starting points and not final destinations. In addition, there will be information forthcoming about the new state test, which aligns with the Common Core Standards. The test, named the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium assessment, SBAC for short, will replace the CMT in the spring of 2015. Although that sounds far away, in fact, we have already begun the transition process as the test will be very different. For example, the students will take the test completely on the computer. Because the test will be administered to third graders, we have to ensure that we begin to plan keyboarding instruction now so they are fluent enough to take the test. We do not want the results to reflect a student's inability to navigate the keyboard rather than what they actually know. There will be new learning for all of us as we enter this new era. I look forward to sharing it with you.
Sincerely, Terry Ricci

CHARACTER CORNER
|
We are pleased to announce that Character Corner is back up and running we are looking forward to sharing the many WONDERFUL random acts of kindness that our children fulfill throughout the year.
If you are new to ISD, the Character Corner is a place where we celebrate our children who are exemplifying the IB Learner Profiles by doing good deeds both in and out of school. Good deeds vary in magnitude, BUT no good deed is too small to celebrate!
We would like to say "JOB WELL DONE!" to:
- John R and family for recycling cans and bottles and then donating the money earned to the children of the St. Luz y Vida Orphanage. Your continuous support and generous donations are truly heartwarming. Thank you, John and family!
- John R and family for donating soda tabs benefiting The Ronald McDonald House. The Ronald McDonald House recycles the tabs and then uses the money earned toward operating the many temporary homes that they provide to families who wish to be near their child who is hospitalized or being treated for pediatric cancer.
- Nicole and Michele M. for donating cans and bottles benefiting the children of the St. Luz y Vida Orphanage. We are so proud of both of you and thankful for your continuous support.
- Nicole and Michele M. for walking in the Juvenile Diabetes Walk in NYC in support of a very close friend earlier in the month. Way to go girls. You are both amazing!
- Zoe & Noah S., Piper, Darby, Sloane & Britney L., Elle & RJ S., Marcella, Ainsleigh & Russell W., Jack E., Elliot C. and Kelly M. for walking in the Juvenile Diabetes Walk this past weekend. Way to go, everyone. We couldn't be more proud of all of you for supporting this worthy cause!
- Thomas S. for being an incredibly kind and considerate individual for offering your coat to a very cold teacher on the playground. Your thoughtfulness was truly touching and we couldn't be more proud of your kind offer. Thank you, Thomas! Your offer warmed our hearts.
- All our wonderful former and present students who helped setup, monitor stands, and breakdown this years Fun Run/Tag Sale. Your support helped to make this event so incredible and ISD couldn't have done it without your support. Job well done!
It goes without saying, that we are anticipating another amazing year of acknowledging all those who are making a positive difference in our world. Please look for us on a monthly basis via the Dragon Tales, and of course on a daily basis via the Character Corner board located in the main hallway of our school.
With great thanks,
The Character Committee

Welcome to The Green Dragon!
Halloween is just around the corner and with it the spooky image of a dark, eerie night lit only by a full yellow moon, bats swooping through the air and spiders lurking, waiting for their prey. Bats and spiders definitely add to the spooktacular ambiance on Halloween, but they also play an important roll in nature. Fruit bats spread the seeds of the fruit they eat and are responsible for scattering up to 95% of the seeds needed for new trees in tropical rain forests. Spiders are beneficial predators and serve a significant role in keeping the populations of many insect pests in check. Have a happy, bat and spider filled Halloween!
