From the Executive Director

This past Friday evening found a crowd of just around 100 gathering at the Garfield Center for the Arts to once again celebrate the "Best of Our Best" at the Kent County Chamber of Commerce annual Excellence in Business Awards Gala. What a great evening!

We were fortunate enough to have the beautiful Prince Theatre as our venue for the evening.  I would like to give a big thanks to Andy Goddard for all the work she does to facilitate this annual event and wish her the best of luck in her new position as the Executive Director of RiverArts come March 1st.

Thanks too to Catering by J.R. for the fabulous "farm-to-table" fare and impeccable service they provided for the evening.  We couldn't have asked for better!

A special thanks goes to our sponsors for the event - The Peoples Bank and Price Rentals and Events!  Your support of the Chamber is greatly appreciated.

Tom McHugh, founder of The Mainstay in Rock Hall, was our guest Master of Ceremonies, and what a great job he did!  When I listen to Tom speak, I often think I am listening to Garrison Keillor from Lake Wobegon and The Prairie Home Companion.  If you've never heard Garrison Keillor, check out your local public radio station to find his program and take a listen.  You'll see what I mean.  A huge thanks to Tom for helping to make the evening so special!

We were also pleased to have Brian Moore & Leslie Sea, the new owners of WCTR Radio here in Chestertown, as our keynote speakers. You know, some people are just naturals at what they do, and Brian and Leslie are two of these people. They spoke of their history in radio, their connections with the Chamber of Commerce over the years, their love of their new home here in Kent County and their exciting plans for WCTR, not just as a radio station, but as a multi-media platform.  We welcome Brian and Leslie to our community and look forward to all the positive changes they will bring.

Also joining us for the evening were members of the 36th District Legislative Delegation, Senator Stephen Hershey, Delegate Jay Jacobs and Delegate Jeff Ghrist. We were honored to have them as our guests as they presented Senatorial and House of Delegates Citations to each of our winners.

There were a record number of nominees for each of the five Excellence in Business Awards categories this year and I have to say, they are ALL deserving of recognition for the efforts they have made, both in operating successful and sustainable businesses, but also to improve the quality of life for all of us here in Kent County and on the Eastern Shore.

And the 2015 Excellence in Business Award Winners are...

SCOTT BRAMBLE PASSES THE TORCH TO CREG FLEETWOOD AS PRESIDENT OF FAM&M

The Board of Directors of The
Scott Bramble & Creg Fleetwood
Peoples Bank, the parent company of FAM&M, are pleased to announce that Creg Fleetwood took over the role of President effective January 1, 2016.  Creg stated, "I am very fortunate to have this opportunity.  Scott has turned over the helm to me at a time when the Agency is thriving.  We have some of the most talented and caring individuals here at FAM&M that truly make our office a team.  Combine that with some of the best Company partners in the industry, and I am excited about our future."  While Scott is stepping down as President, he is not going anywhere.  Scott states, "My goals going forward will include advancing our culture of providing superior service to our valued clients.  With so many choices out there, we will continue to search for ways to stand out.  It is also a priority that we continue to pursue with a passion our mission of giving back to the community we live and work in and which provides so much for us."

Creg is the grandson of one of Chestertown's "Local Legends", the late Robert T. Fleetwood.  He was a partner of the Agency from 1946 until his retirement in 1975. Creg stated "We still have customers who purchased their first policies from him and they like to remind me how great a man he was."  Creg started his career with the firm in 2003.

Creg is a graduate of Kent County High School and Washington College.  He is a two-time All American and Captain of the Shoremen Men's' Lacrosse Team.   He has and continues to serve on numerous Boards, to name a few:  Kent County Community Food Pantry, Kent County Chamber of Commerce, and Washington College Hall of Fame Committee.

Scott Bramble commented, "This is clearly an exciting time for us at FAM&M.  It's great that Creg can continue a legacy founded by his grandfather, made great by Ed Athey, and perpetuated by so many wonderful and dedicated employees."

We look forward to seeing FAM&M continue to prosper in 2016.

Mid-Shore Pro Bono Puts Out Welcome Mat
For Out-Of-State Attorneys

Attorneys licensed to practice in other states are now welcome to volunteer their services at Mid-Shore Pro Bono, thanks to a rule change regarding admission to the Bar of Maryland. As of January 1, a change to the Rules Governing Admission allows attorneys not licensed to practice in Maryland, but licensed in good standing in another state, to take on pro bono work in Maryland.

The Eastern Shore is home or second home to many attorneys who practice or are retired from practice in Washington, D.C., Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. The rule change presents an opportunity for Mid-Shore Pro Bono to recruit new volunteer attorneys to help the low-income clients it serves in Kent, Queen Anne's, Caroline, Talbot and Dorchester counties.

Mid-Shore Pro Bono's Executive Director Sandy Brown welcomes any help this new pool of potential volunteers can provide. "This is a good news/bad news opportunity," she said. "The good news is that attorneys licensed in other states now can help our clients. The bad news is that we have so many clients who need help and not enough time being volunteered by many of our Maryland lawyers to handle all the cases."

"With fewer attorneys practicing here on the Eastern Shore than on the other side of the Bay and in the cities," she added, "we can use all the help we can get."

There is a certification process that attorneys licensed out of state must complete. Once certified, there is no expiration date, and attorneys will be permitted to represent clients through legal services organizations in Maryland as long as they receive no compensation for their time. They also will not have to pay dues to the state's Client Protection Fund.

Mid-Shore Pro Bono can provide interested attorneys with details on how to apply for certification. Its staff offers administrative support for the lawyers, ensuring that their time is used where best for both the attorneys and the clients.

"Serving in our clinics is a great opportunity where out-of-state lawyers could help," suggested Brown. "They are a low commitment of time and a huge service to our community." Mid-Shore Pro Bono holds civil legal clinics in each of the five counties it serves.

"Whether our client is about to lose her home, facing bankruptcy, in the turmoil of divorce or even simply a senior needing a will or power of attorney to ease his mind," Brown added, "having more volunteer attorneys
means being able to tell more of these people in distress that we can help."

For more information, to volunteer or to make a donation, call Mid-Shore Pro Bono at 410-690-8128 or visit www.midshoreprobono.org.

Compass Regional Hospice nurse receives Hospice Caregiver Award

Shelly Griffith, RN, clinical educator for Compass Regional Hospice, is the most recent recipient of the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Hospice Caregivers Award. Griffith was nominated by her colleagues at Compass to recognize her commitment to patient care and team collaboration.

A nurse with many years of hospice experience, Griffith joined the Compass Regional Hospice team in early 2014. The Hospice Caregivers Award nominator wrote, "Shelly truly epitomizes what this award is really all about. She continues to go out of her way to help in any way that she can. She took on the Bridges pre-hospice program and, with her professional expertise, was able to guide many of these Bridges patients to accept hospice services."

The nominator added, "Shelly has shown her dedication to all of our patients and to our staff by helping where she could. She has helped out at the Hospice Center in Centreville, covering for other nurses when needed. She has admitted patients, helped with routine visits and taken on the role as clinical educator."

Griffith was also acknowledged for her role in helping re-open the Caroline Hospice Home in Denton.
"Shelly has helped patients and staff in any way, anywhere she could, with a smile on her face and not a grumble to be heard," the nomination read. "She helps us all maintain a quality of clinical excellence by her work ethic, example and dedication to patient care."

The Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Hospice Caregivers Award is open to physicians, nurses, social workers, hospice aides, chaplains, administrative staff and volunteers of Compass Regional Hospice who care for patients in Queen Anne's, Kent and Caroline Counties. To nominate a hospice caregiver, contact Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 408 S. Liberty Street in Centreville, 410-758-1151, [email protected].
