Veteran's Day

Wednesday, November 11

Thank a Veteran!

From the Executive Director

Greetings!

It's hard to believe it is already November and the holidays are just around the corner.  Here at the Chamber we are planning for our upcoming events, including two Business-After-Hours this month and a Networking Breakfast & Presentation on November 10. The Holiday Gala in December will be held this year at the newly-opened Cassinelli Distillery in Chestertown and the Annual Excellence in Business Awards is scheduled for January 29.  Look for additional information about these events in this newsletter and in upcoming announcements.

We will also be starting work on our annual 2016 Chamber of Commerce Kent County Map to be published in January.  The map is distributed throughout the county and region to visitors and businesses, as well as to those who are interested in moving to Kent County and want to know more about the area.

This annual publication provides some terrific advertising opportunities at very reasonable rates and they have a shelf life of anywhere from one year to 18 months, with print runs in the thousands.  Advertising information will be arriving soon in our members' mail boxes (U.S. mailboxes that is).  If you are interested in advertising in this widely distributed publication, please give me a call or send me an email at the Chamber office.

I would like to send out a big thank you to Sallie Price and the Board of Easter Seals Camp Fairlee for hosting the Chamber's October Business-After-Hours in conjunction with their celebration of  60 years of service to our community.  They do such good work at Camp Fairlee and their dedication to their campers is amazing. THANK YOU!

Just a reminder of the upcoming Networking Breakfast and Presentation by Chesapeake College on Tuesday, November 10 at Heron Point.  Please see the flyer later in this newsletter for details and registration information.  Also coming up is a Business-After-Hours and Ribbon Cutting on Thursday, November 19 which will be hosted by Champion Realty at  their new location at 210 S. Cross Street, Suite 102 in Chestertown.  In keeping with the Thanksgiving spirit, admission to this event is two canned goods for donation to our local food pantry.  Patsy Whiteley and her staff host this event annually and provide much-needed donations to the Community Food Pantry.  So please mark your calendars and join us for these events.

If you have not attended a Chamber function recently, try and take some time to join us.  These events are one of the great benefits of Chamber membership.  You have an opportunity to meet face-to-face with potential customers and let them know firsthand about your product and service(s).  And, because they've met you in person, they are more likely to do business with you.  Remember to bring your business cards!

In the meantime, if you know of someone who could profit from the benefits of Chamber Membership, tell them about us and have them give me a call.

NEWS FROM & FOR OUR MEMBERS

Linda Mastro, Director, Marketing and Communications
For release November 1, 2015
COMMENTARY FOR HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE CARE MONTH

Kathy Deoudes
Compass Regional Hospice Board of Directors
November is recognized as National Hospice and Palliative Care month, making us acutely aware of our role and mission.  Compass Regional Hospice (formerly known as Hospice of Queen Anne's) is proudly celebrating 30 years of service to patients, families and individuals in our community.  We have grown from a tiny house located in Queenstown to a state of the art medical and administrative facility in Centreville. Our mission of "Care on your terms" has expanded beyond Queen Anne's County to include the residents of Caroline and Kent Counties.

As the season of giving thanks approaches, please allow us to thank you.
Heather Guerieri
Executive Director Compass Regional Hospice

To our patients, families and those in our grief support programs: Being entrusted to provide care to you or your loved ones at the most difficult times in your life is, for us, an honor and a privilege.  Your faces, needs and stories drive each and every member of our staff and the Board of Directors to strive for excellence in fulfilling our mission in the communities we serve.
To our donors: Being entrusted with your donations to provide care in the community is a fiduciary responsibility that we take very seriously.  Your financial support is what enables us to ensure that every patient or individual in our service area who requires our care can receive it, regardless of ability to pay.

To our business community: Your support and belief in Compass Regional Hospice is what has enabled us to chart our course and grow into the highly respected, specialized healthcare organization and medical facilities that we are today.  Your expert guidance, services and support, donations, volunteers, and in-kind donations are what allow us to continue to grow and adapt to the needs of our community.

To our legislators: Thank you for making room for us in your budgets, for guiding us through complex legislative matters related to our mission, and for always being on our side.
To our volunteers:  Compass Regional Hospice, simply put, cannot do what we do without you and your selfless acts of volunteerism.   Approximately 300 volunteers, giving close to 30,000 volunteer hours each year, is an amazing statistic and a crucial component of our success.

Our gratitude to all of you knows no bounds, and is carried in our hearts and minds each and every day.

Delmarva Power Donates 1,200 Smoke Alarms to Fire Officials

Emergency Services Partnership Program Enters 16th Year

SALISBURY, Md. - In observance of Fire Prevention Month, Delmarva Power's Emergency Services Partnership Program today donated 1,200 residential smoke alarms to the Maryland State Fire Marshal's office for distribution throughout Maryland's Eastern Shore. The smoke alarms have 10-year, long-life, sealed lithium batteries.

"This is the 16th consecutive year that Delmarva Power's Emergency Services Partnership Program has worked with Maryland public safety agencies to help provide them with the resources they need to keep the public safe," said John Allen, Delmarva Power region vice president. "These donations are another example of our commitment to being a reliable corporate citizen, dedicated to helping reduce the number of fire-related deaths and injuries in our service territory."

"Working smoke alarms and a home escape plan are two key elements to ensure personal protection against the risk of fire," said Brian S. Geraci, Maryland state fire marshal. "This year we plan to use Delmarva Power's donation of smoke alarms as part of our comprehensive fire and life safety program. Smoke alarms help give families the crucial time needed to safely escape a fire where they are most vulnerable - in their homes."

This year's safety theme is "Hear the Beep Where You Sleep," since half of all fire deaths occur between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Additional organizations supporting this effort include: Maryland State Firemen's Association, Fire and Burn Safety Coalition of Maryland, Maryland State Fire Prevention Commission and the Maryland Fire Chief's Association.

Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse provided the alarms to Delmarva Power at a reduced cost to help support this safety effort. Since 2000, Delmarva Power has donated 21,850 regular smoke alarms, 1,042 special-needs smoke alarms for the hearing impaired, and 2,300 carbon monoxide alarms to fire safety officials in Maryland and Delaware.

For more information about Delmarva Power, visit www.delmarva.com. Follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/delmarvapower and Twitter at www.twitter.com/delmarvaconnect. Our mobile app is available at www.delmarva.com/mobileapp.
