From the Executive Director
Greetings!
Chamber Membership - What's in it for me?
Good question - and as business folks you should be looking for return on your investment with every dollar you spend. Did you know the Kent County Chamber offers: Referrals:
Consumers both local and out of town, often turn to the Chamber for assistance in selecting a service or business. As Chamber members, rest assured we are constantly recommending your businesses and providing opportunities that showcase you.
Training:
Does your business need a little help? The Kent County Chamber helps businesses by partnering them with mentors and entrepreneurs who are profitable and willing to help new and existing businesses avoid some pitfalls along the way. We work with SBA, SCORE, Small Business Development Center (SBDC), Eastern Shore Entreprenuership Center, Chesapeake College, Kent County Schools, banks and more to assist you in your success.
Legislative:
The Kent County Chamber works as an advocate for business. We weigh in on wages, transportation, educational initiatives, and local issues that are important for our business members and stakeholders.
Honors Business:
Membership allows us to acknowledge and award businesses that provide superior customer service or go that extra mile for the customer at our annual Awards Gala in January.
Rewards:
Your membership dollar allows us to produce community events such as our speaker presentations, legislative breakfasts, education breakfast, and the annual 5-County regional mixer, to name a few. Additionally, we produce two publications annually that showcase our members; the Kent County Map and the Kent County Business Directory. Both of these are distributed widely throughout the County, at Chamber events, through the Tourism office and the Visitors Center to current and new residents and businesses, and visitors to Kent County. These are just of few of the benefits of being a member of the Kent County Chamber of Commerce. Visit our website at www.kentchamber.org to see what other benefits are available to our members.
Referrals, partnerships, advocacy, events: These are all part of what we do daily. Our networking events are extraordinary and we will continue to grow them as a viable tool in building our members connections and referring new customers.
And speaking of events, we have two coming up this month. On Wednesday, September 30, the Rotary Club of Chestertown will be hosting a Business-After-Hours at the Lelia Hynson Pavilion next to Wilmer Park in Chestertown. Then on Wednesday, September 30, you are invited to join the Chamber at Washington College to meet, Sheila C. Bair, the 28th President of Washington College. Additional details of these events and others can be found later in this newsletter. So check it out!
I hope everyone has a safe and happy Labor Day weekend!
Loretta M. Lodge

One Maryland One Book at Kent County Public Library
Kent County Public Library invites you to take part in One Maryland One Book, a program of the Maryland Humanities Council designed to bring together diverse people in communities across the state through the shared experience of reading the same book. Now in its eighth year, One Maryland One Book has kindled thoughtful and wide-ranging discussions as Marylanders have read and considered a variety of books.
This fall, join with others from our community and be part of the discussion surrounding the 2015 One Maryland One Book selection The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by Daniel James Brown. Pick up a copy at any of Kent County Public Library's branches, then take part in book discussions and other programs that tie-in to the book, its themes, and its place in history.
Book Group Discussions of The Boys in the Boat
Monday, September 14 North County Branch 6:30 pm
Wednesday, September 16 Rock Hall Branch 3 pm
Thursday, September 24 Chestertown Branch 12 pm
Tuesday, October 20 North County Branch 2 pm
The Cinema of the 1930s
When he had the time and the 15¢, The Boys in the Boat's central figure Joe Rantz enjoyed taking his fiancée, Joyce, to the cinema. In October, you, too, can experience a couple classics from "The Golden Age of Hollywood" as part of KCPL's regular Friday Film series. Friday Films are shown at 2pm at the Chestertown branch.
Friday, October 9 "Top Hat" (1935)
Exploring Themes in Literature Through Music
Like Daniel James Brown's storytelling in The Boys in the Boat, Pam Ortiz's songwriting speaks to the triumph and tragedy of the human experience-who we are, what we've won and lost, and how we love and live.
Join Pam Ortiz and members of the Pam Ortiz Band for a concert that showcases the universal themes of humanity - how we strive to succeed, our struggles to overcome hardship, what makes us laugh and cry, and the bonds we form along the way.
Wednesday, October 21 Chestertown Branch 6 pm

Opening Reception for "Book Cover Quilts" by the Olde Kent Quilters Creative Bee
The "Book Cover Quilts" exhibit created by the Olde Kent Quilters Creative Bee features quilts inspired by books and book covers. The challenge taken on by members of the Creative Bee was not to reproduce the cover of the book but to create a unique design inspired by any type of book-from general fiction to children's literature to reference works-while keeping the quilt within a specific size. Also included in this exhibit are pieces from their Birthday Banners project.
The Olde Kent Quilters of Chestertown consists of over 85 members. Within the guild there are several small interest groups or "Bees." The OKQ Creative Bee meets bi-monthly to share information concerning new quilting trends, mentor each other, and critique each other's work. Creative Bee members: Nancy Caldwell, Denise Flynn, Judi Gunter, Gail Newman, Helga Orrick, Barbara Quigley, Alice Reinbold, Shelli Smith, and Emily Williamson.
The "Book Cover Quilts" will be on display at the Chestertown branch of Kent County Public Library during the month of September. Members of the Creative Bee will host an opening reception on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 from 5-7pm. All are welcome to meet the artists, enjoy light refreshments, and be among the first to view the exhibit.
For more information about this exhibit or to learn about becoming an exhibiting artist at Kent County Public Library, please call the Chestertown branch at 410-778-3636.
Remembering World War II: A Call to Share Personal Stories
Seventy years ago in September 1945, Japan surrendered to the Allies, ending World War II. In commemoration, veterans and others who were personally impacted by World War II, including spouses and children of those who served, are invited to take part in a discussion of the war and their part in it.
On Wednesday, September 9th at 10am, "Remembering World War II" will open with a brief introduction given by a local veteran of World War II, after which the floor will be opened for a moderated discussion and sharing of personal stories. This program, conceived by the local veteran as a way for those who experienced the war to reminisce together in a public forum, will proceed until all personal stories are told.
A short handout noting the major events of the war will be available and rare posters from the Soviet Union urging the populace to "rise up and drive out the Nazi hordes" will be on display.
All are welcome to join in this remembrance and sharing of personal stories. For more information, please call Kent County Public Library at 410-778-3636.

|
"We offer the HALOS support group through the Compass Regional Hospice Hope & Healing Center," explains Knotts. "We are committed to helping people face the many emotions associated with grief. HALOS focuses on a particular kind of loss that carries with it guilt, shame and many other emotional responses to a loved one's suicide."
Kotzen, who lives on Kent Island, lost her son to suicide in 2010. "Our son took his life shortly after his 40th birthday," she remembers. "This happened out of the blue; we had seen no signs that he was depressed or thinking about taking his life."
Kotzen adds, "My husband and I looked for a support group and couldn't find one locally. We did our best to make it through on our own."
In 2013 Kotzen joined the board of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and was trained to facilitate support groups. After participating in the AFSP Out of the Darkness Walk in Columbia, Maryland, Kotzen decided to organize the first Mid-Shore MD walk. The Out of the Darkness Walk raises awareness about depression and suicide, and provides comfort and assistance to those who have lost someone to suicide.

NEWS FROM & FOR OUR MEMBERS

Students, business leaders and government officials on August 19 celebrated the grand opening of the Chesapeake College Health Professions and Athletics Center (HPAC) and official kick-off of the college's 50th anniversary. Former Baltimore Raven's head coach Brian Billick, joined state and local officials in opening the center.
Construction on the $37 million project began in late 2013. At 100,000 square feet, the HPAC is larger than the original four campus building combined. The project was funded through a 75 percent state contribution, with the remaining 25 percent paid by the five support counties. The Chesapeake College Foundation raised $2.5 million in private funds (with a state challenge grant) as part of the Setting Sail Campaign. Some of the funds were used to help equip the HPAC.
Chesapeake's outstanding student athletes have managed to compete on a national level despite out-of-date facilities. With the new athletics facilities, Chesapeake will be able to better prepare student athletes for competition, and also host tournaments.
More than 1,000 students either currently enrolled or in the pipeline for credit and continuing education/workforce health programs will benefit from state of the art training facilities.

Delmarva Power Reminds Customers of Available Funds
Customers Can Apply for Energy Assistance
SALISBURY, Md. - Customers who are having difficulty paying their energy bills can find extra help over the next several months. The federal government offers energy assistance through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).
LIHEAP is a block grant program, administered by the states, that assists low-income households - both homeowners and renters - with their energy bills. The application period is open now in Delaware and Maryland. There could be limited funds available, so customers are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
"LIHEAP doesn't pay anyone's entire utility bill, but the financial assistance can help someone get through a crisis, a really cold winter or a dangerously hot summer," said John Allen, Delmarva Power region vice president.
Delmarva Power is partnering with community-based organizations and social service agencies throughout Delaware and Maryland to ensure that low-income and at-risk customers know about the federal dollars available to help them with their utility bills.
Below are the program details and contact information for both states:

Additional information can be found online at www.dhss.delaware.gov/dhss/dssc/liheap.html.
Maryland
The Maryland Office of Home Energy Programs administers the Maryland Energy Assistance and the Electric Universal Service Programs, which primarily help low-income residents pay their electricity and heating bills.

Customers can also contact Delmarva Power's Customer Care Center (1-800-375-7117) and ask about Budget Billing which allows customers to avoid seasonal peaks in their electric bills by dividing their payments evenly over the course of the entire year.

Compass Regional Hospice was the chosen cause for the 15th annual Sgt. Randy Morris Memorial Golf Tournament, which was held on June 20, 2015 at Prospect Bay Country Club in Grasonville. The 136 golfers who played in the tournament helped raise $11,350 for hospice care and grief support for people of all ages in Queen Anne's, Kent and Caroline Counties. The organizers of the golf tournament chose Compass Regional Hospice to honor the memory of Bill Morris, who recently died under hospice. The day of golf began with an opening ceremony at which Alissa Flaherty sang the National Anthem. Volunteers for the Randy Morris Memorial Golf Tournament and from Compass Regional Hospice turned out to staff the tournament. "We were so pleased to meet the golfers and to hear so many stories about how the people of our community have been served by our nurses, hospice aides, social workers, grief counselors and volunteers," said Kenda Leager, development officer for Compass Regional Hospice. "Fundraisers sponsored by the community like this one make it possible for us to deliver our mission of 'Care on your terms,' 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year long." Keith Morris, a nephew of Billy Morris, said, "Those of us who organized this year's Randy Morris Memorial Golf Tournament want to thank all of the golfers, volunteers, sponsors and donors who contributed to the success of the event." Major sponsors included Aqua Pools & Spa, Kelly Distributors, Queenstown Bank of MD, Pepsi of Delmarva, CNB, Queenstown Volunteer Fire Company, Sudlersville Volunteer Fire Company, Prospect Bay Country Club and Koski Trucking.
