From the Executive Director

Greetings!

It always makes me kind of sad when August arrives.  I begin to think that this is the end of summer, when in reality it is only half over. We still have a full month of summer fun and sunshine in August and even with returning to school and work after summer vacations, the official end of summer is not until September 23rd - almost two full months away ...and so, I am happy again.

Because so many people are away spending time with family and friends during the summer months, there are no Chamber events planned for August.  However, a number of events are in the works for the upcoming months.  In September, the Rotary Club will be hosting a Business-After-Hours at the Lelia Hynson Pavilion in Chestertown on Thursday, September 24.  October will bring renowned Economist Anirban Basu to Chestertown at the Prince Theatre on Thursday, October 15 and Easter Seals Camp Fairlee will be hosting a Business-After-Hours complete with bonfire, camp tours, and refreshments on Thursday, October 22.  We also hope to have a Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening for Physically FITch at their new location on High Street in Chestertown.  When that date is determined, I will let you know.  Then in November, we are looking forward to Business-After-Hours events hosted on Thursday, November 5 by Crow Vineyard and Winery and on November 12 by Chesapeake Bank and Trust.

So, as you can see there is lots coming up.  Look for details and invitations to all of these events in your inbox.

On another note, the 2015-2016 Kent County Chamber of Commerce Directory has arrived at the Chamber office.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many members who supported this project by advertising in the Directory.  A copy will be arriving in all of our Chamber members' mailboxes soon!  For anyone who is not a Chamber member, but would like a copy or copies, give me a call or stop by the Chamber office.

Please use this Directory as your primary source for business goods and services.  These locally owned businesses significantly give back to our county, and have committed themselves to being a part of the local community of business leadership working together.  Would you, in turn, help them by reinvesting your money into the local economy?  You may be surprised by all that our area businesses have to offer!

Enjoy this great summer weather!

UPCOMING EVENTS

Nancy Connolly, LCSW-C will tell us more about Maryland's behavioral health care delivery system at the August 6 breakfast meeting of the Kent Community Breakfast Group (CBG). Nancy is a licensed clinical social worker and director of Kent County Behavioral Health.

Kent County Behavioral Health includes the outpatient mental health clinic and the outpatient addictions unit (formerly Publick House). KCBH operates under the auspices of the Kent County Health Department which is, in turn, the local office of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH). Both units are located at Scheeler Road, Chestertown, MD. Behavioral Health promotes recovery, resiliency, health, and wellness for individuals who have emotional, substance use, addictive and/or psychiatric disorders.

Nancy prides herself on being born and raised on Maryland's Eastern Shore. While obtaining her education, she was employed at Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital as medical staff secretary. She attended Chesapeake College part-time from 1983-1988, (A.A. degree), Washington College for two years (B.A. degree) and then completed her Masters in Social Work at University of Maryland, braving the Bay Bridge for two long years.

In 1996 Nancy joined the staff of the Kent County Mental Health team and was promoted to Director in 2000. She has taught at both Chesapeake College and Washington College believing firmly in the concept of "giving back".

Nancy will be discussing both units of KCBH. The mental health clinic serves 600 outpatients (staff of 15) and the addictions unit 200 outpatients (staff of 6). The current opiate issue (pain pills, heroin) will be explored.

Nancy has invited a recovering addict to also address the group and is hopeful she will be able to attend.

CBG meets for breakfast every Thursday at 7:30AM at the Holiday Inn Express in Chestertown. Our meetings start promptly at 7:30AM, so you may want to come at 7:15AM to get your breakfast before the meeting. Our web site is  www.kentcbg.org. If you have any suggestions for a program you would like to see, please send us an email message at chair@kentcbg.org.

Programs and Events for Adults

In addition to our regularly scheduled book groups, computer classes, and Friday films, KCPL is offering two special programs for adults in August. On Wednesday, August 5th, Getting Started with Gale Courses will provide an in-person orientation for anyone interested in taking free online classes. This program is designed to teach you how to register for classes, introduce the online learning environment, and give you a chance to ask questions about the process or course offerings. Later in the month, on Wednesday, August 19th at 5:30pm, yoga instructor Fletcher Johnson will be teaching Intro to Chair Yoga. Chair yoga is a great way to stretch while alleviating pressure on the joints. It is perfect for first timers, people with physical limitations, and those who wish to experience 'regular' yoga poses in a different way. Registration is required for both Getting Started with Gale Courses and Chair Yoga.

Chesapeake College Launches Recruitment Marketing Campaign

Initiative coincides with 50th Anniversary

Wye Mills, Maryland, July 27, 2015W - Chesapeake College today unveiled a new marketing and recruitment campaign to kick-off its 50th Anniversary celebration: Your time. Your place. Chesapeake College at 50. Created to increase awareness and enrollment in the college' s degree, career and enrichment programs, the multi-year campaign will officially launch on campus and in the community on August 19 at the opening of school's Health Professions and Athletic Center building (HPAC).

"For 50 years, Mid-Shore residents have turned to Chesapeake for college credit, degrees, career training and personal enrichment," said Barbara Viniar, Chesapeake College President. "This campaign underscores our value as a high-quality, affordable and nurturing center for higher education, career advancement and lifelong learning."

Your time. Your Place. features a new, distinctive logo mark inspired by the college's wind turbine and circular campus design with the tagline honoring the milestone anniversary. The logo conveys continuous movement around a center, reflecting multiple points of entry on each person's journey with Chesapeake College.

Through a series of six student profiles, the campaign highlights individual stories of people throughout the region who have taken advantage of Chesapeake's wealth of programs and resources.

Campaign planning and research began in November 2014. More than 500 alumni, business leaders, government officials, students, faculty and staff answered online surveys or participated in focus groups held in Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne's and Talbot counties. The Chesapeake College Foundation, a non-profit organization that raises money for the college, commissioned the campaign.

Foundation President Steve Ochse said the 50th anniversary provided the right opportunity for Chesapeake to market itself.

"I strongly believe graduating high school students and their parents need to be more fully aware how Chesapeake provides a great education, and also makes great economic sense," he said. "It truly is the right time and right place to prepare, start or return to college."

The research revealed that Chesapeake offers an environment that is friendly and supportive, easily accessible and affordable when compared to other options in Maryland and Delaware.

"It became clear that Chesapeake is a place people turn and return, time and again for themselves and their family members," said Lucie Hughes, Chesapeake College Vice President of Institutional Advancement. "It also revealed that our faculty members are well regarded for teaching credentials and a commitment to student success."

Hughes continued that the campaign is a "positive, personal and proud" affirmation of the school's commitment to the community and emphasizes its status as Maryland's first regional college. Alumni, she said, are embracing the campaign through social media and in conversations with family and friends.

"Chesapeake has always been a leader in higher education," said Laura Shahan, class of 2005 and President of Chesapeake College Alumni and Friends Association. "Our new branding is innovative and refreshing, and proves how Chesapeake will continue to stay a leader in the future."

Dorchester County-based marketing and public relations firm Choptank Communications executed the planning, research and creative development for the campaign.

"Your time. Your place. embraces Chesapeake's 50-year evolution from cornfield to modern campus with a vibrant and uplifting statement about the college's personal connection to citizens throughout the region," said Choptank President Andrea Vernot. "The tagline and logo were created based on the perceptions, values and images most strongly associated with the college."

The first Farm to Table fundraising dinner hosted by
Paige and John Evans and Zeke Warner raised more than $23,000 for Compass Kids. Despite the steamy summer weather more than 200 Compass  Regional Hospice supporters gathered for this elegant event held on Sunday, Ju
ne 14, on the Evans' waterfront property.
The dance band 21 Horses entertained guests who bid on silent auction items and enjoyed the Corsica River view. The gourmet meal catered by Magnolia Caterers featured food raised on local farms and supplied by Chesapeake Bay seafood purveyors.

Compass Kids is a family-centered program with the goal of helping parents secure the care and resources they need when a child is diagnosed with a chronic, complex and often life-limiting illness. This program also offers support for children and families grieving the death of a loved one. One of the most popular grief support programs offered through Compass Kids is Camp New Dawn, a summer retreat for children, teens and families, who learn how to express their feelings about the loss of a loved one.

Zeke Warner and Paige Evans both benefited from Camp New Dawn. Warner's daughters attended camp after his wife died in 2000. Paige attended one of the first grief camps 20 years ago after the death of her grandfather.
Warner says, "Camp New Dawn helped my girls see and understand that losing someone they loved didn't happen just to them. It takes a lot of money to run hospice and we want to make sure that Compass Regional Hospice has the money it needs to do the work they do in our community."

Heather Guerieri, (center) executive director for Compass Regional Hospice, welcomes Jameson Hunter (left) and Meghan Hunter (right) of Centreville to the Farm to Table fundraiser for Compass Kids.

Paige Evans acknowledges the many local companies that supported
the Farm to Table fundraiser. She says, "Our generous sponsors made it possible for us to exceed our fundraising goal."

Premier sponsors for the Farm to Table event included Graul's Market, J.C. Warner Co., Dover Rent All Tents & Events, Ebb Tide Tent & Party Rentals, Pierson's Comfort Group, Price Rentals & Events, and Cara Smith Designs.

Kenda Leager, development officer for Compass Regional Hospice, says, "Fundraising is essential for our grief support services because many of them are offered free of charge. On behalf of the children and families served through Compass Kids, we thank Paige and John Evans and Zeke Warner for their support. We are especially grateful that they have decided to host another Farm to Table dinner party in 2016."
