From the Executive Director
Greetings! Summer is almost upon us and the weather has been decidedly undecided. Hopefully these few cool, rainy days will give way to that glorious summer weather we we all love. May was a busy month at the the Chamber. In conjunction with Kent County High School and Kent Forward, the Chamber held our annual Education Breakfast on May 8th at Kent County High School. The High School's culinary class prepared a fabulous breakfast for the 40+ in attendance. Superintendent Dr. Karen Couch gave an update on the Kent County School system and Principal Tracey Williams and Mark Buckel, Career Technology Education, (CTE), Resource Teacher gave an update on the CTE programs. Afterwards the guests were invited to accompany individual high school students to visit various classrooms for a hands-on demonstration of what is being done in that particular class, from culinary, to engineering, to carpentry, to auto mechanics, just to name a few. Not a single person walked away without a new-found understanding and pride in what Kent County's teachers and students are accomplishing. Thanks to the teachers and staff and congratulations to all the students! Also on May 8th, the Chamber joined one of our newest members Price Rentals and Events for their Open House and Ribbon Cutting. Jason & CJ Price have moved the party rental aspect from JBK Ace Hardware & Rental to Price Rentals & Events' new location at 6313 Church Hill Road in Chestertown. (Don't worry, JBK still has all of your tools and supplies rentals available.) When you get a chance, stop in and see Jason & CJ and their staff and their extensive inventory of party and wedding needs and services. You won't be disappointed! May also brought the Fourth Annual Five-County Mixer, sponsored by Kent, Queen Anne's, Caroline, Talbot and Dorchester Counties, and hosted by Chesapeake College. We had approximately 300 in attendance. A great turn-out with some fabulous door prizes, wonderful food and great networking opportunities! This is one of the best networking opportunities of the year, so keep this in mind for next May. 2015 will be the fifth regional mixer of the five counties. May 20th was the Senior Awards ceremony at Kent County High School. Over $100,000 in scholarships were awarded by a large array of local businesses and service organizations. The Chamber was proud to present the 2015 Chamber Scholarship Award to Alexander B. Jones, a graduating senior who will be attending the Arcadia University in Glenside, PA in the fall. Congratulations Alex! Come June, the Chamber will be joining Jen Donisi at Great Oak Manor for this month's Business-After-Hours on Thursday, June 11 from 5:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. Mark your calendars for this event and come out and see the beautiful grounds and facilities overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. Jen always has some great food and refreshments too! This event is free to Chamber members, but we do ask that you register online at www.kentchamber.org so Jen will know how many to prepare for. Hope to see you there and don't forget your business cards! Coming to your mail box soon! Work on the 2015-2016 Chamber Business Directory continues. We hope to have the Directory ready for distribution in July. As always, if you have any business related questions or are looking for potential resources or connections, feel free to call or email or stop in. I am always here to facilitate your business needs.

Beinn An Tuirc Wind Farm - Argyll, Scotland
|
Janet Christensen-Lewis will update the Community Breakfast Group (CBG) on the status of the efforts of Apex Clean Energy to obtain the necessary permits to construct a wind farm in Kennedyville at their
June 4 meeting.
Government support of "renewable" energy is stronger in the European Union than it is in the United States, and has contributed significantly to their economic problems. Struan Stevenson was a member of the European Parliament from Scotland, and is currently president of the European Parliament's Climate Change, Biodiversity & Sustainable Development Intergroup. He writes:
"Chambers Dictionary defines the word RAPE as meaning violation, despoiling or abuse. I believe that the current mad race for renewables is responsible for the rape of Britain. Wind turbines violate the principle of fairness by transferring vast amounts of money from the poor to the rich. They despoil our unique landscape and environment; and through noise, the flicker-effect and vibration, they abuse the health and welfare of people and animals which have to live near them."
Apex Clean Energy is basically an investment bank set up to take advantage of government mandates and subsidies for "renewable" energy. Operating much like a house flipper, they obtain the permits needed to construct a wind or solar farm, collect the subsidies then sell the facilities to utilities who actually operate them. Users of the catastrophically expensive electric power pay the bill. However, getting the permits is not easy, particularly if there is significant local opposition. Apex must obtain permission from dozens of agencies, ranging from the Kent County Department of Planning and Zoning to the Maryland Public Service Commission to the Federal Aviation Agency. Even if Apex succeeds in running this gauntlet, the project must survive challenges in State and Federal Courts. Janet is an important member of Keep Kent Scenic an organization that was formed recently to coordinate efforts to oppose the Apex project. She will describe the Apex project, the permitting process, the current status of project, and what the future fight will look like. The CBG meets for breakfast every Thursday at 7:30AM at the Holiday Inn Express in Chestertown. Our meetings start promptly at 7:30AM, so you may want to come at 7:15AM to get your breakfast before the meeting. Our website is www.kentcbg.org.

Join us for History Happy Hour from 4 to 6 on Friday, June 5 at the Bordley History Center, 301 High Street, Chestertown.
Could the Civil War have been prevented?
The debate began shortly after Appomattox and continues to this very day. In the spring of 1861, however, there was one group of Americans who felt war was unnecessary and could be avoided - that group was the Unionists of Virginia. The Unionists were led by John Brown Baldwin, George Summers, John Janney, Alexander H.H. 'Sandy' Stuart and included none other than Jubal Early.
They immediately began negotiations with the Lincoln Administration on compromise proposals. . Their key contact was William Henry Seward, Secretary of State in the new Lincoln Cabinet. Based largely on Seward's assurances, the Unionist coalition voted against an Ordinance of Secession on April 4, 1861 by the widest of margins, 90-45.
Larry Denton, an authority on the secession crisis, tells the story of these heroic men who devised a way to save the nation without a war - and why their plan failed in his new book, UNIONISTS IN VIRGINIA: POLITICS, SECESSION AND THEIR PLAN TO PREVENT CIVIL WAR. Denton holds a master's degree, with honors, from Johns Hopkins University where he began his career as Assistant to the Dean. In 1978 he accepted an appointment to serve as Special Assistant to the Associate Administrator of NOAA, a Presidential appointee. Larry Denton is uniquely qualified to lead us to a better understanding of efforts to prevent what for Kent County was a local war in so many ways. Join us for History Happy Hour, 4PM Friday, June 5 at the Bordley History Center , 301 High Street in Chestertown and learn more about our early history.

SHA IMPROVES MD 290 BRIDGE OVER CHESTER RIVER IN KENT COUNTY
Deck Repairs Will Extend Service Life, Improve Ride Quality and Reduce Maintenance Costs
(June 2, 2015) - The Maryland Department of Transportation's State Highway Administration (SHA) will repair the MD 290 (Crumpton Road) Bridge over Chester River in Kent County beginning Monday, June 8. Work includes concrete repairs and resurfacing of the bridge deck (driving surface).
Recognizing the importance of this bridge to local agriculture, SHA scheduled this approximately two-week project to minimize impacts on farming operations. Repairs should take about one week for each lane, with crews working around the clock to expedite the process. SHA will use a flagging operation to maintain a travel lane for all legal-width loads throughout construction. Wide loads and farm equipment may be able to cross the bridge during certain work phases but passage is not guaranteed. Wide load drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and seek alternate routes if necessary June 8-22. All dates are weather-permitting.
The 364-foot long steel beam bridge, constructed in 1950, is just west of Crumpton at the Kent/Queen Anne's County line. Current work, in conjunction with previous substructure repairs (beneath the deck) and repainting, will extend the service life of the bridge an estimated 20-30 years. This work will also minimize the need for frequent deck patching and significantly reduce maintenance costs for the next several years.
On average, about 2,000 vehicles travel this stretch of MD 290 each day and the bridge is a vital link for farmers moving large equipment during the planting and harvesting seasons. Covington Machine and Welding of Annapolis is the contractor for the estimated $200,000 repairs.
While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to keep traffic safely moving in work zones, please partner with us because work zone safety is everyone's business - slow down and stay alert. Safer driving. Safer work zones. For everyone.

START THE HEART
The Start the Heart campaign was the brain child of Dylan Conner, the son of Jeff Conner and Ellen Gale, when he was 11 and attending Garnett Elementary School.
Dylan saw a publicly accessible AED (Automated External Defibrillator) as a necessity for the residents of and visitors to Chestertown as a high percentage of them are over the age of 55. Dylan stated that "This is an age group more prone to heart conditions yet not exclusive to them..." Dylan got in contact with David Rice, Chief of Emergency Medical Services, to find out the feasibility and cost of such an undertaking. With the help of his mentor, Mark Mumford, and his sponsoring organization, Kent County Community Marching Band, Dylan set out to get the permission to install the AED and to raise the funds, $2,347, necessary to accomplish his goal.
Dylan applied to the Family and Community Partnerships of Kent County for a Kids Who Care Award/Grant in the amount of $1,000. Dylan was awarded this amount which is the highest award that FCPKC makes. Armed with $1,000 towards his goal of $2,347, Dylan set out to raise the remaining amount necessary. Dylan's approach to fundraising was a humble one. He hoped that every business in Downtown Chestertown would donate $1.00.
Needless to say, Dylan accomplished his goal. David Rice and Dylan installed the AED on Saturday, May 9, near the ATM at The Peoples Bank, Main Branch.
WE INVITE YOU TO JOIN US FOR A RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY AND TO MEET DYLAN ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10 AT 4 PM, THE PEOPLES BANK, MAIN BRANCH PARKING LOT.

Dear friends,
The 2014 fireworks show over Rock Hall Harbor was the best that we had in the 21 years of this event. If you were here, you know that the harbor was a smoke filled, flag flying, blazing show of patriotism. The blaring of horns and the cheers from an appreciative crowd of thousands resounded throughout the town. The 2015 show will be even better.
Zambelli Fireworks is once again our shooting team and the show will be 30 minutes of non-stop, electrifying and pyrotechnic artistry. We are the smallest town in the state with a fireworks show that rivals the large metropolitan shows. We can make this happen only because there are hundreds of contributors who share our enthusiasm and unabashed patriotic spirit. We seek your support once again.
It will resound throughout every community in Kent County because of the tremendous appreciation we have for such spirited and uniting event.
Your donation can be made by check, payable to Rock Hall Fireworks, PO Box 481, Rock Hall, MD, 21661.
Or you can go online to our GiveZooks account and make payment by credit card by following this link :
Link for Credit Card Donations For Rock Hall 4th of July Fireworks
Thank you for your contribution to this success. You are supporting a time honored tradition and the Rock Hall Fire Company and Rescue Squad. Your donation may be in Honor of someone or in Memory of a past hero. The Rock Hall fireworks show is our affirmation that we chose to be in 'the land of the free and the home of the brave'. We look forward to bringing it to Rock Hall on July 3, 2015, at 9 PM.

Delmarva Power Prepares for Atlantic Hurricane Season
Storm Season Means Customers Should Review Plans, Check Supplies
OCEAN CITY, Md./ REHOBOTH, Del. - With the start of the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season just a few days away, officials from Delmarva Power, area municipalities and emergency services agencies held joint news conferences in Ocean City, Md., and Rehoboth, Del., today to remind the public that it's time to prepare for the possibility that destructive tropical weather could hit the region any time between June 1 and Nov. 30.
Meteorologists are predicting a "well-below-average" hurricane season with seven tropical storms (sustained winds of 39 mph or higher) of which three could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher).
"Despite the early prediction of a less active season, it is essential that all of us remain vigilant and be prepared for hurricane season. We want our customers to know that we are committed to an emergency response system that makes safety a priority, restores power as quickly as possible and provides customers with information on how to prepare for and deal with weather-related outages. said Jim Smith, Delmarva Power senior public affairs manager. "We'll be prepared to add more personnel and resources as needed and work with local governments through our Emergency Services Partnership Program to activate emergency procedures."
Delmarva Power employees prepare for the possibility of storm-related power outages by participating in emergency drills on a regular basis. In addition, the company maintains an adequate supply of essential equipment, such as poles, wires and transformers, and stays in contact with other utilities to quickly arrange for mutual assistance in case of a natural disaster.
"We also believe that reventive maintenance is essential in reducing the potential for service interruptions caused by stormy weather," said Smith. "We plan to invest more than $1 billion over the next several years to upgrade our electric infrastructure. We'll also spend several million dollars this year on tree trimming near power lines to help avoid outages that can be caused by trees and limbs that fall during storms."
Delmarva Power suggests that customers assemble an emergency kit that can be used at home and, if necessary, taken with them if they're ordered to evacuate. Each kit should include a flashlight, battery-powered clock and radio, extra batteries, non-perishable food, manual can opener, bottled water and a list of important phone numbers. All items can be placed into a large cooler which is easy to grab if a person has to leave home quickly.
Delmarva Power also provides a "Storm Preparation Handbook" that can be downloaded from its website (www.delmarva.com) or you can call Customer Care at 800-375-7117 to request a copy via mail.
Smith was joined at today's events by Clay Stamp, Executive Director of the Maryland Emergency Management Agency; Joe Theobald, Ocean City's Emergency Services Director; Fred Webster, Director of Worcester County Emergency Services; Joe Thomas, Director of the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center; Bill Sammler, Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the National Weather Service; Sharon Lynn, City Manager of Rehoboth Beach; and Patrick Delaney, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Delmarva.
"While the last two hurricane seasons have been relatively quiet, we all remember the devastation from Hurricane Sandy in 2012, especially in the New York City area and on Maryland's Lower Eastern Shore," said Stamp. "It's important for us to always be prepared because even in a quiet hurricane season, just one hurricane making landfall in our area can be devastating."
"Whatever the forecast, residents and property owners should never be lulled into a sense of complacency because it only takes one storm to destroy property and threaten lives," said Thomas. "One step residents can take ahead of hurricane season is to create a Safety Profile for their household with Sussex County's free Smart911.com service to provide potentially critical, life-saving information up front to first responders. Profiles can contain as much or as little information as users want, including details about their properties, special medical conditions and family contacts."
"Regardless of the seasonal hurricane forecast, it only takes one storm to cause a disaster on the Delmarva Peninsula," said Sammler. "We should prepare as if every year will be the year of a disaster."
