From the Executive Director
Greetings!
Spring has arrived! I think all of us are glad to put behind us what seemed to be an interminable winter, and look forward to long days and warm summer evenings. Since my April newsletter, there has been quite a bit of activity here at the Chamber, both in the way of events and planning. Here are a few of the highlights.
On April 16th, the Chamber sponsored the annual post-session Legislative Wrap-Up Breakfast at Heron Point in Chestertown. We had over 50 in attendance, including our legislators and county officials. It was a good turn-out and as always, very informative. There is no better way to find out what is going on in your state than talking directly with our elected representatives. If you missed this breakfast or the earlier pre-session breakfast in January, keep these in mind for next year.
On Thursday, April 23rd the Mayor & Council of Chestertown hosted the April Business-After-Hours at the Visitors Center in downtown Chestertown. We had a great turn-out with lots of good food provided by our Town Council members and Town Manager, and a great networking opportunity. ...and what a beautiful venue the Visitors Center is! If you haven't been in in awhile or never - stop in and check it out!
In conjunction with Kent Forward, the Chamber will hold our annual Education Breakfast at 8:30 A.M. on Friday, May 8 at Kent County High School.. The breakfast will feature an update on our schools from Superintendent Dr. Karen Couch and a presentation of the Kent County High School's Career & Technology Education programs by Principal Tracey Williams and Kent County High School students.
Also on Friday, May 8, Price Rentals & Events will welcome Chamber members and the public for their Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting at their new facility at 6313 Church Hill Road in Chestertown. Reservations are no longer being taken for this event, but if you have an opportunity to stop by at some other time to see what they have to offer, please do so. I think you will be surprised at both the range of products and services they have to offer.
Applications have been received and are being reviewed for the Chamber's 2015 Scholarship, being offered to a deserving high school senior graduating from a Kent County high school. The announcement and presentation of the Scholarship Award will be made at the Kent County High School (KCHS) Senior Awards Ceremony on May 20th at 6:30 P.M. at the KCHS auditorium in Worton.
Also coming up in May is the annual five-county Regional Mixer which will be held on Wednesday, May 27 from 5:30 - 7:30 P.M. at Chesapeake College. You know what they say, "People do business with people they know". And what better way to get to know people from the five-county region including Kent, Caroline, Queen Anne's, Talbot & Dorchester Counties than at this annual event. This event is free and open to the public, but RSVP's are requested. Please see the flyer later in this newsletter for additional details.
Applications have been received and are being reviewed for the Chamber's 2015 Scholarship, being offered to a deserving high school senior. The announcement and presentation of the Scholarship Award will be made at the Kent County High School (KCHS) Senior Awards Ceremony on May 20th at 6:30 P.M. at the KCHS auditorium in Worton.
Lastly, a couple of reminders:
Work on the 2015-2016 Chamber Business Directory has begun. Requests for member information updates have been mailed to all Chamber members. To ensure your company's information is accurate, please return your completed form to the Chamber by May 15. Updates received after that date cannot be guaranteed to be included in the Directory. Please don't assume I know your changes. I need your input!
If you have a non-advertisement, public service announcement or a news item about you or your business, send it to me and I will include it in one of my weekly NewsFlashes or monthly Newsletter for FREE! It's a great way to get your business noticed!
Looking for other ways to showcase your business? The Chamber offers a FREE marketing opportunity exclusively for Chamber members. Every Thursday morning at 8:40 A.M., a Chamber member will be featured on WCTR Radio 1530 AM and 102.3 FM to talk about their business at NO COST to the Chamber member. If you're interested, please contact me at the Chamber office.
Enjoy this great weather!

******CANCELLED******
The Poultry Grower's Field Day has been cancelled due to the ongoing issues and concerns associated with infection, eradication and control of High Path Avian Influenza in the Upper Midwest.
While these infections don't have a direct threat to the Delmarva Broiler Industry, the association with Wildlife can threaten our region. The source of infection is primarily linked to migratory waterfowl and HPAI breaks have occurred along 3 of the 4 primary flyways in the U.S.
For more information about HPAI see the website links below. There will also be an educational series of off-farm meetings planned to help you keep your farm disease free. These are planned for late May, early June. You are encouraged to attend one of these seminars.

Hospice Nurses Provide Care on Your Terms
|
Compass Regional Hospice celebrates Nurses Week in May to recognize the many roles nurses play, including providing hospice care for patients and overseeing the operations of a regional hospice organization serving Queen Anne's, Kent and Caroline Counties.
|
During May, when Nurses Week is celebrated each year, Compass Regional Hospice honors the hospice nurses who escort patients and their families through the process of living with a life-limiting illness.
"Hospice is a unique form of medical care focused on living well at the end of life," says Heather Guerieri, RN, MSN, CHPN, executive director, Compass Regional Hospice. "Each member of our clinical team plays a role in helping patients and their families as they decide how they want to live the final months of life. That is why we refer to the services we offer as 'Care on your terms.'"
A hospice nurse, also known as a case manager, leads the clinical care team responsible for each Compass Regional Hospice patient. Hospice nurses care for patients wherever they live, including private homes, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and senior living communities. Nurses also staff the six-bed Hospice Center in Centreville, where residential hospice care and general inpatient care is available around the clock.
The hospice nurse assigned to each patient develops an individualized plan of care using information from the patient's physician and from an assessment of the person's psychological and social situation. The care team also includes the Compass Regional Hospice medical directors, a nurse practitioner, a physical therapist and a clinical pharmacist, who provide advice on medications and other medical aspects of a patient's care plan.
Pain control and managing symptoms such as anxiety and agitation top the list of a nurse's responsibilities. The nurse also makes arrangements for equipment the patient may need, such as a hospital bed, wheelchair and walker.
The hospice nurses also collaborate with social workers, grief counselors and the hospice chaplain to ensure that the emotional, psychological and spiritual needs of the patient and family are considered during all phases of care.
At Compass Regional Hospice a hospice nurse is on call seven days a week, 24 hours a day, to answer questions and to make a visit to address a patient's symptoms. Certified hospice aides round out the clinical care team. Under the direction of a hospice nurse, the aides help patients with bathing, dressing and other activities of daily living.
At weekly interdisciplinary team meetings the hospice nurses lead a discussion about each patient under their care. "The team looks at the big picture for each patient and offers ideas for how best to respond to each person's needs and concerns," explains Lori Collier, RN, CPHQ, director of clinical services, Compass Regional Hospice. "We even help our patients who want to travel by making arrangements with other hospice agencies that can provide care, as needed, while they are away."
Collier adds, "It's an honor and a privilege to be welcomed into our patients' lives. The commitment to meeting patients and families where they are - any time of day or night, wherever they may be physically, mentally and emotionally - is what makes us all proud to say we work for Compass Regional Hospice."
