From the Executive Director
AND THE WINNERS ARE ...
The Kent County Chamber of Commerce 45th Annual Excellence in Business Awards Gala was held this past Friday evening at the Prince Theatre at the Garfield Center for the Arts. ...and what a gala it was!
The theme this year was an "Evening in Paris" with French fare and classic French music from the boulevards of Paris.
With nearly 100 in attendance, the Chamber celebrated the "Best of our Best".
Following introductions of the Chamber Board members and the Chamber's Sponsors, we were honored to have Kimberly Scott, owner of an Eastern Shore business, The Great Gourmet located in Federalsburg, address the crowd. She spoke of her modest beginning in 2003 and how through hard work, developing relationships, and trust in God, she has grown and diversified into a multi-million dollar business. What a truly inspirational woman and business leader! To find out more about Kimberly and her business, you can visit her website at www.thegreatgourmet.com.
The 2014-2015 Kent County Public School Teacher of the Year, Florence "Flo" Terrill was recognized for her years of leadership and dedication to the students of Kent County. John H. Sprinkle, Jr. Joins Us Again to Discuss Preservation
After the War is Over: The Stewardship of Civil War Battlefields
In the mid-1940s Ronald F. Lee, the National Park Service's Chief Historian, was dispatched to Appomattox, Virginia to dissuade some local citizens who were eagerly supporting the proposed reconstruction of the McLean House, where General Robert E. Lee had surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant in 1865. Installing such "fabrications" on historic battlefields were contrary to established NPS policy regarding the stewardship of these properties and it was Lee's job to convince the local boosters, who were "all wild on restorations," that his agency could not support-despite substantial architectural documentation--the reconstruction of the vanished building. The so-called "second defeat of Lee at Appomattox," is just one example of the diverse challenges that impact the preservation, interpretation and management of historic properties associated with the Civil War. Since the early 1930s battlefield preservation has had a central place in the story of the National Park Service and its partners. This presentation will survey the story of battlefield preservation as it relates to "the late unpleasantness."
John H. Sprinkle, Jr. serves as the Bureau Historian for the National Park Service in Washington, DC. With a quarter century of experience in the field, he is the author of Crafting Preservation Criteria: The National Register of Historic Places and American Historic Preservation. Dr. Sprinkle is now at work on Saving Spaces: Land Conservation in the United States. Join us for History Happy Hour, 4PM Friday, Februrary 6, 2015 at the Bordley History Center, 301 High Street in Chestertown and learn more about the preservation of Civil War battlefields.

Salon News
With mixed feelings, we are announcing Dan's departure. He will be leaving us to manage The Kitty Knight House. Our daughter, Alexandria, will take his place at Salon.
If you receive texts for appointment confirmations, please note it will come from a different number now. Please use the text option during our regular Salon hours only. Thank You.
We are still searching for a manicurist/stylist to join our team. Please pass this along if you know someone great!
Heather has taken over manicures. By now, she has acquired the technique necessary for the gel service to last 2 weeks. You will be happy to know a basic manicure service takes 30 minutes. Gel service takes 45 minutes to an hour. We gently soak off the gel polish with wraps. This takes 10-15 minutes alone. Yes, it could be done faster but we would have to use harsher products. The health of your nails is more important to us.

Thanks for doing business with us.

Melissa and Dan

Gala marks 30 years of hospice care
 |
Paula Warner, the owner of Paula's Fine Jewelry in Chester, once again supports the Compass Regional Hospice Gala by donating an exquisite pearl bracelet for the jewelry raffle. Pictured at Paula's shop are (left to right) Heather Guerieri, executive director, Compass Regional Hospice; Paula Warner; Kathy Deoudes, chair, Compass Regional Hospice Board of Directors; Kenda Leager, development officer, Compass Regional Hospice; Compass Board officers Janice Feeley, treasurer, and Teresa Baumann, vice chair.
|
On Friday, March 6, Compass Regional hospice hosts its annual Gala at Annie's Paramount Steak & Seafood House in Grasonville. this elegant evening of dinner and dancing marks the beginning of a yearlong celebration of the 30th anniversary of hospice care in Queen Anne's County.
Formerly Hospice of Queen Anne's, Compass Regional Hospice was founded in 1985 to provide hospice care for the people of Queen Anne's County. Today Compass Regional Hospice is the sole provider of hospice services in Queen Anne's, Kent and Caroline Counties.
The defining image for the Compass Regional Hospice 2015 Gala is a string of pearls. "Pearls are the traditional gift for people celebrating 30th anniversaries," explains Heather Guerieri, executive director, Compass Regional Hospice. "For us the pearl also symbolizes our ties to the Chesapeake Bay region and reminds us that each person we serve is a treasure. We take seriously our commitment to care for patients, their families and members of our community, on their own terms, through all phases of life and loss."
The 2015 Gala begins at 6:30 pm and features cocktails and hors d'oeuvres followed by a seated dinner of lobster tail and steak. After dinner, the dance band Retrospect will entertain guests with a playlist that includes today's hits and memorable tunes back to the Big Band era. Auction bidding will give guests an opportunity to take home treasures of many kinds, including dinner parties, sporting events, vintage collectibles, jewelry and travel packages.
The popular jewelry raffle returns this year with a one-of-a-kind pearl bracelet donated by Paula's Fine Jewelry in Chester. Only 100 tickets will be sold for a chance to win this bracelet of four strands of pearls enhanced with rubies and diamond. Raffle tickets priced at $100 are available for sale now and at the Gala. The winning ticket will be drawn at the Gala and the winner need not be present.
Sponsors for the Gala add to the success of this fundraiser for Compass Regional Hospice. "The generosity of the businesses and individuals who sponsor this event make it possible for us to care for the seriously ill and grieving individuals on the Eastern Shore," says Kenda Leager, development office, Compass Regional Hospice.
"We rely on fundraising events like the Gala and donations from the community for at least 30 percent of our operating budget," Leager adds. "Proceeds from the Gala make it possible for us to say 'Yes' to anyone who needs our services regardless of their ability to pay."
Gala tickets are $200 per person and must be purchased in advance of the event. Leager says, "The Gala has been a sell out for the last couple of years so we encourage anyone who wants to attend to get their tickets early."
To purchase a Gala ticket and a chance for the jewelry raffle and to sponsor the Gala, contact Kenda Leager, kleager@compassregionalhospice.org, 443-262-4106. More information is also available at www.compassregionalhospice.org/gala.
