From the Executive Director

Season's Greetings!

Well here we are, once again in the midst of a wonderful and joyous holiday season.  I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

The Chamber will be kicking off this holiday season with our annual Holiday Gala on Tuesday, December 9. This year's event will be held at Luisa's Cucina Italiana at their new location at 849 Washington Avenue, (the former Village Bakery), hosted by owner Vinny Assante and staff. As in the past, door prizes have been graciously donated by a dozen of our members and it promises to be a wonderful event! Space for this event is limited, so if you have not made your reservation, do so today by emailing me at the Chamber or online at www.kentchamber.org.

A big thank you goes out to Jon Coile and Patsy Whiteley, and their associates and staff at Champion Realty for hosting our Business-After-Hours in November.  Generally, there is no admission fee for our Business-After-Hours, but again this year, Patsy required two canned goods from each attendee to be donated to our local food pantry.  What a tremendous way to give back to the community.  Thank you Patsy!

Again, I cannot emphasize enough what great networking opportunities these events are.  Sure they're fun and there is always good food and drink, but the networking aspect cannot be overlooked.  Nothing beats a face-to-face meeting with a potential customer or referral.

The 2015 Chamber of Commerce Kent County Map project is underway. The rates are very reasonable, especially considering the extended shelf life and the distribution of the Map through the Chamber, the Visitors Center, the Kent County Tourism office and local businesses. The deadline for advertising is this Friday, December 5th. Information on advertising in this publication was sent to each of our members. If you have not placed your ad yet, now is the time to do so. Click here for Ad Sizes & Rates and Order Form.

I also want to remind our members to submit your ballots for the Kent County Chamber of Commerce 2015 Board of Directors Election.  Click the link below to submit your ballot.

Thank you in advance for your vote. And remember ... your vote DOES count!

Before I sign off, I would like to ask if any of our member businesses are interested in sponsoring our 2015-2016 Chamber Membership Cards. These cards are given to each of our member businesses as they renew their Chamber membership and are used to identify them as Chamber members and to obtain discounts from participating members of the Business-to-Business Member Benefit Program. With over 300 members, this means there are over 300 of these cards out there in the community. Sponsorship of these cards means having your business name on the back of each one. For a $30 - $40 investment, that's a pretty good ROI. Please give me a call at the Chamber if you are interested in sponsoring these cards. Only one sponsorship opportunity is available, so this will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and yours a wonderful, safe, and happy holiday season!!

HERON POINT

Kathy Sanderson, Life Care Consultant at Heron Point of Chestertown, will provide the Community Breakfast Group (CBG) with an overview of Continuing Care Communities in general, and Heron Point in particular at their Thursday breakfast meeting on December 4 meeting.

A Continuing Care Community is a type of retirement community which as addresses aging care needs from independent living through assisted living to nursing home care. Continuing-care communities are ideal for seniors that may be living in isolation, and would like to be immersed in a hospitable environment with other people of the same age. Typically, a range of activities and amenities are provided for both recreation and resource. However, CCRCs are costly, and vary widely in entrance and recurring fees.

The CBG meets for breakfast every Thursday at 7:30AM at the Holiday Inn Express in Chestertown.  Our meetings start promptly at 7:30AM, so you may want to come at 7:15AM to get your breakfast before the meeting.

Bill Herb, Defense Department Regional Environmental Coordinator for EPA region 5, will explain the environmental issues presented by the Conowingo Dam to CBG at our December 11 meeting.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ART RECEPTION FOR PHOTOGRAPHER TERRY WILLIS

Chestertown, MD, November 26, 2104 - Photographer Terry Willis will be exhibiting a selection of his work at the Chestertown Branch of Kent County Public Library during the month of December. Stop by on First Friday, December 4th from 5-8pm for a first look at the exhibit and a chance to talk with the creative mind behind the photos.

Terry Willis is a Kent County native who as a teenager gave up hunting with a shotgun for "shooting" wildlife with a camera and lens.  He doesn't so much create photographs as "see" them. Whether in his kayak or hiking, something about a scene will say, "photograph me," and the trick is to capture what nature has produced. He thinks of his wildlife photographs as portraits, many of which feature birds and most of which have been taken in the fields, marshes or open water that surrounds Kent County. One of his favorite locations for finding scenes to photograph is Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge where he has performed several thousand hours of volunteer work over the past two decades.

For more information about this event or to learn about displaying artwork at KCPL, please call 410-778-3636.

Mid-Shore Pro Bono Receives Awards For Debtor Assistance Efforts

Attorneys Christopher McGrady, left, and Andrea Ross received awards in recognition of their contributions to Mid-Shore Pro Bono's Debtor Assistance Project.

Mid-Shore Pro Bono is receiving recognition and funding for its efforts in support of individuals and families facing bankruptcy in our community. Since 2010, through the Debtor Assistance Project (DAP), Mid-Shore Pro Bono's volunteer attorneys have been offering free legal advice to low-income debtors who either already have filed for bankruptcy without a lawyer or are considering filing and intend to represent themselves.

The organization will receive new support for DAP in 2015 from the American College of Bankruptcy Foundation. The grant helps fund Mid-Shore Pro Bono's monthly DAP clinics, providing debtors with opportunities to meet with attorneys for cost-free half-hour consultations. The attorneys are specially trained in bankruptcy law before being approved to provide the services.

Mid-Shore Pro Bono received further recognition on November 20 from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, which presented the organization with a Pro Bono Service Award for its outstanding service and collaboration with DAP. Chief Judge Nancy V. Alquist and Judge Robert A. Gordon also presented awards to Mid-Shore Pro Bono attorneys Christopher McGrady and Andrea Ross in recognition of their pro bono contributions to the organization's Debtor Assistance Project.

Originally a collaboration of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Maryland State Bar Association, Bankruptcy Bar Association of Maryland and other legal services groups, DAP faced a transition in 2013, which created an opportunity for Mid-Shore Pro Bono to act on behalf of its residents.

Convinced of the continuing need for the project due to the weak economy, and with the sanction of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Mid-Shore Pro Bono took the initiative in sustaining the program locally. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court and Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service now refer debtors seeking assistance and living on the Eastern Shore directly to Mid-Shore Pro Bono.

Mid-Shore Pro Bono Executive Director Sandy Brown thanked both the American College of Bankruptcy Foundation and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for their support and recognition of the organization's efforts. "The administrative and support obligations of DAP are time-consuming and labor-intensive both for staff and our generous volunteer attorneys," she said. "We are honored by these awards and deeply appreciate the support for the exceptional pro bono legal services program we offer to our community."

Mid-Shore Pro Bono serves Kent, Queen Anne's, Caroline, Talbot and Dorchester counties. For more information or to make a donation, call Mid-Shore Pro Bono at 410-690-8128 or visit www.midshoreprobono.org.

Now that the Gubernatorial and Legislative elections are in the rear view mirror, the Maryland Chamber is already at work continuing to advance the business climate issues that are important to our members and figured so prominently in statewide campaigns. While Larry Hogan's win over Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown is considered a surprise by some, the Maryland Chamber has been in touch with the Hogan Transition Team and will be there as Governor-elect Hogan builds his administration and works toward his first legislative session.

The Maryland Chamber has already begun our efforts to work with the Hogan Administration and General Assembly in areas such as innovation, technology, entrepreneurship and education - areas that will help drive Maryland's economy and develop more and better jobs. Thank you to all our members whose support helped the Chamber ensure these discussions took center stage in this election.

The General Assembly also saw its share of changes:

  • of the 188 members, 66 are new to their legislative seat
  • there are 11 new Senators and 59 new Delegates
  • the partisan make-up of the chambers has changed with 33 Democrats and 14 Republicans in the Senate and 91 Democrats and 50 Republicans in the House.
The Chamber has begun to reach out to new legislators, briefing them on the issues important to the business community and building on the work that has already been done to move Maryland toward a more competitive and employer friendly climate.

Election results also included the passage of ballot measure Question #1. As a driving force in the "Coalition to Protect Maryland's Transportation Funds", the Chamber is pleased that Maryland voters passed the constitutional amendment creating a lock box ensuring Maryland's dedicated transportation funds are used for transportation purposes only.  Many thanks to all of our Coalition partners and sponsors for their support.

The Maryland Chamber of Commerce is Maryland's statewide business advocacy organization.  Our mission is to support our members and to advance Maryland as a national and global competitive leader.   If you have any questions or we can be of service to you please contact our office 410-269-0642 or 301-261-285.
