From the Executive Director

Greetings!

On behalf of the Kent County Chamber of Commerce, I would like to extend a BIG THANK YOU!  With members like you, we are able to provide a sustainable business community in Kent County as well as foster growth and positive change. Only through your support can the Chamber continue to fund important community initiatives and lead the way for business.

The Kent Chamber features our Proud Member logo, and as a member you can use this logo on your own website or printed documents.  If you do not have an electronic version of this Proud Member logo, please contact me at Chamber and I will email it to you. This logo will tell customers and ... potential customers that you are a Chamber Member and have made an investment in our community. We want you to thrive as a successful local business providing needed services and jobs to the area. - Did you know that 63% of consumers are more likely to purchase goods and services from a business if they know they are a member of the Chamber? That is 2 out of 3 customers and shows true membership value!

At your Chamber we strive to provide what you need to succeed. Your Chamber Membership extends to all of your employees, so not only can you be involved, but all your staff can be involved in the Chamber. Whether you choose to take advantage of our partnership with SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) and their free business mentoring services or take part in one of our monthly Business-After-Hours networking opportunities or monthly free Lunch and Learn series, participate in the Member-to-Member Benefit Program, post a help wanted ad on the Chamber website, sponsor an event, or serve on a committee, your engagement will help you develop your business and make valuable connections.

Our mission at the Kent County Chamber of Commerce is simple - to serve, represent and be the leading advocate for the business interests of our membership in ways that enhance the environment of the business community and quality of life and well-being of residents and visitors.   I hope that through your interaction and involvement with the Chamber, we can see how to better serve you. Please contact me directly if you ever need assistance.

At your Chamber, we work hard to provide real benefits for you and your employees, and we hope you will continue to join us in making Kent County a great place to live, work and play.  Remember, membership in the Chamber is an investment in your community and in Kent County's future.

I thank you for being an integral part of that future!

HQA Announces Adult Grief Support Group

Grief Services Coordinator and Counselor Rhonda Knotts will conduct the adult grief support group at Hospice of Queen Anne's
Hospice of Queen Anne's will be holding an adult grief support group beginning on Tuesday, October 7. The group will be held each Tuesday for ten consecutive weeks from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Hospice Center located at 255 Comet Drive in Centerville. This group is designed for those dealing with the loss of a spouse, sibling or parent. Members are asked to commit to coming each week in order to benefit the most from the group.

Each meeting will revolve around topics such as: normal grief, sharing memories, and adjusting to and finding meaning in your loss. Sessions will include activities, grief education and open discussion. "Although many people feel apprehensive about sharing their pain with strangers, most participants find that only the first class is the most difficult. Once they attend the first time, they easily return," says Grief Services Coordinator and Counselor Rhonda Knotts.

Registration for the group will be held on a first-come, first-served basis and there is a $25 enrollment fee that covers the cost of materials, however no participant will be turned away based on their inability to pay. There is no fee for the group if your loved one was our hospice patient within the last year. For more information or to register, contact Rhonda Knotts at 443-262-4109 or rknotts@hospiceofqueenannes.org.

This grief support group is offered through the Hospice of Queen Anne's Hope & Healing Center. The Hope & Healing Center is the program through which Hospice of Queen Anne's provides grief support services for people of all ages. HQA Volunteers Complete Training

Ten residents from Queen Anne's and  Caroline counties recently completed the Hospice of Queen Anne's patient care volunteer training program, which qualifies them to provide emotional support and practical assistance to hospice patients, families and caregivers.

(Left to Right) Front row: Susan Riehl, Peggy Schaefer, Teresa Swanke and Christina deLeon. Back row: Bente Cooney, Patricia Fitchett, Candy Edwards-Roach, Tim Dignen, Steve Griffin and Loring Mills

The comprehensive training program taught by HQA staff, teaches volunteers how to companion a patient at the end of life and prepares them with the knowledge and skills to enhance comfort and quality of life. Trainees explore their own feelings about death and dying as they learn how to be with a patient at one of the most vulnerable times in life.

Those who wish to provide direct patient care will be required to complete several additional hours with patients in the Hospice Center under the supervision of a clinical team member. For those who wish to be involved in grief support, their training will continue under HQA's Grief Services and Support Program staff leading to new responsibilities as bereavement volunteers, vigil volunteers or grief support facilitators.

Plans are being made to offer hospice volunteer training sessions in Kent and Caroline Counties.

Test Conservation Event Called for Delmarva Power

Energy Wise Rewards Customers

SALISBURY, Md. - For customers participating in Delmarva Power's voluntary Energy Wise Rewards program, a conservation period will be called from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, September 30th in order to test equipment.

Delmarva Power will cycle participants' air conditioner compressors off and on for short intervals during these hours. Due to minimal air conditioner use because of the anticipated mild weather, customers are not expected to notice any significant change in comfort.

It may take up to a half-hour after the test event ends at 4 p.m. for air conditioners to resume normal operations.

Energy Wise Rewards is a voluntary program that offers customers a choice of a programmable thermostat or an outdoor switch, which the utility installs at no charge to customers. During summer periods of peak electric demand, Energy Wise Rewards works to reduce electricity usage by cycling air conditioner compressors off and on for short periods during times of peak electricity use. Customers will receive a bill reduction in return for allowing Delmarva Power to cycle their air conditioners a few days each year.

Customers can learn more about Energy Wise Rewards by calling 1-866-353-5799 or visiting www.delmarva.com/rewards.

Back-to-back forums will feature candidates for the offices of Clerk of Court and State's Attorney, beginning at 7 p.m.

Current Clerk of Court Mark L. Mumford, a Democrat, is being challenged by Robert H. Strong, a Republican. The office of State's Attorney has two men seeking what would be their first terms in that office. The candidates are Democrat Andrew C. Meehan and Republican Harris P. Murphy. Both candidates have practiced law for many years in Kent County. The State's Attorney job pays $101,802.

The forums will follow League procedure by controlling the amount of time that candidates have to make statements and answer questions. Margie Elsberg will moderate the event.

For more information on the candidates, and all those persons running in Maryland's November 4 election, visit the League's special website - www.vote411.org.

The CSS VIRGINIA, the Confederacy's first ironclad,  began asthe USS MERRIMACK.  How ironic it is that in her first engagement with ships of

the U.S. Navy, she was commanded by the only admiral the South ever had,

Admiral Franklin Buchanan, who also began his service with the U.S. Navy.

And it seems that Buchanan had roots here in Kent County where many people displayed divided loyalties during the Civil War.

Wireless Broadband 101:  What Wireless Can (and Cannot) Do for You!

THE PROBLEM:

Today we are witnessing exploding demand for access to high speed networks in virtually all sectors of our society as digital content/applications become embedded in business processes and our personal lives. But providing access/bandwidth is a huge challenge, with cost being the big hurdle. For example, fiber cable, which provides the best capacity, can cost tens of thousands $$$/mile to deploy. Given this situation, fiber cannot meet all requirements.

But without a reduction in broadband's cost, a growing "digital divide" threatens our economy and society, especially for those who can't afford broadband prices. In response, many organizations are examining lower cost options.

A SOLUTION?:
"Fixed wireless" (not to be confused with "mobile/cellular" wireless) has emerged as a promising candidate, especially for reaching the "last mile". Yet despite great/growing interest, "fixed wireless" is often misunderstood to the detriment of the project in question
.
THE WEBINAR:
To address this problem, the Eastern Shore Regional GIS Cooperative (ESRGC), has teamed with Triad Wireless Engineering to host a "Wireless Broadband 101" Web conference on Tuesday October 7, 2014

YOU WILL LEARN:

* The basic components of a fixed wireless network

* Relevant strengths/weaknesses of the primary "Last Mile" technologies in use today e.g. fiber (trenched and
aerial), mobile (cellular) wireless, and fixed wireless

* Key considerations in implementing a "fixed wireless"

* Near-term wireless enhancements/potential cost reduction

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
Any stakeholder in rural Broadband

WHEN:
Tuesday, October 7, 2014
10:30am-12:00 Noon EST

PRESENTING:
Rory Conaway, CEO/Founder of Triad Communications, a Phoenix AZ Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) will present. He has decades of experience in designing, deploying and supporting wireless broadband networks. SEE BIO AT END OF SLIDE DECK.

Rory will be assisted by Mary Buffington, John McQuaid and Ed Vitalos of the ESRGC.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

News Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( September 22, 2014 )

UM Shore Regional Health Announces Month-long Breast Cancer Awareness Activities and Events

University of Maryland Shore Regional Health will promote October as Breast Cancer Awareness month with various activities throughout the month, all aimed at increasing awareness of breast cancer and how it can be best detected, prevented and treated. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer, taking the lives of approximately 40,000 women annually.

"October is a great time to educate people about the importance of prevention and early detection when it comes to breast cancer," says Roberta Lilly, MD, Medical Director for UM Shore Regional Health's Breast Center. "Regular mammography screening, self breast examination and knowing your family history of cancer all help lower breast cancer mortality by finding breast cancer early-when the chance of successful treatment is best and the survival rate is highest."

Some of the planned activities include the following:

Pink Ribbon Hanging & Tree Lighting, October 1, Chestertown and Easton locations:

    • Chestertown: To kick off the activities surrounding Breast Cancer Awareness Month, staff and volunteers from the Radiology Department and The Eleanor and Ethel Leh Women's Center, UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown will hang pink ribbons in honor and/or memory of those patients who have been treated for breast cancer; are breast cancer survivors; and/or for those who have lost their battle with breast cancer. These ribbons will be hung on the trees directly outside the Medical Services Building at UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown. Once decorated with the ribbons, the trees will serve as a month-long reminder of the friends, neighbors and loved ones whose lives have been touched by breast cancer. Ribbons will be available at the Radiology Department front desk, The Eleanor and Ethel Leh Women's Center, and the hospital cafeteria, prior to October 1. For more information, call 410-810-5459.
    • Easton: To kick off the activities surrounding Breast Cancer Awareness Month, staff and volunteers from UM Shore Regional Health's Breast Center will hang pink ribbons in honor of those patients who were treated by the Breast Center in the past year. These ribbons will be hung on the large tree in the front circle at UM Shore Medical Center at Easton. A public ribbon ceremony will be held on Wednesday, October 1 at 6:30pm. Once decorated with the ribbons, the tree will serve as a month-long reminder of the friends, neighbors and loved ones whose lives have been touched by breast cancer. This tree will be lit with pink lights throughout the month.
    • "Get Your Pink On!" Pink Hair Extensions, October 2, 11:00am-1:00pm, Easton: Visit the UM Shore Regional Health's Breast Center on October 2, between 11:00am and 1:00pm to purchase pink hair extensions, provided by local hair studio Headrush 180 Salon. Hair extensions are $10. All proceeds collected by Headrush 180 Salon will be donated to the Breast Center.
    • Cancer Survivor Art Gallery Opening & Reception, October 3, 4-6:00pm, Easton: The UM Shore Regional Health's Breast Center art gallery will mark its fifth anniversary with an exhibit that features the art of breast and cancer survivors. The art exhibit and reception opens on Friday, October 3, from 4pm-6:00pm, at the Breast Center. The public is invited to this free event. The exhibit will continue through the end of this year.
    • "Pink Carnival" An Education Carnival on Breast Cancer, October 22, 11am-2pm, Chestertown: An educational and fun-filled event to build awareness about breast cancer and to offer hope to those touched by breast cancer. Learn the latest facts and research about breast cancer while participating in games and activities. Meet the staff from the Radiology Department and The Eleanor and Ethel Leh Women's Center, UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown. Event held in the Courtyard (weather permitting) at UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown. The public is invited to this free event. For more information, call 410-810-5459.
    • Open House, October 28, 5-7:00pm, Easton: The public is invited to attend the UM Shore Regional Health's Breast Center's Open House on Tuesday, October 28, from 5:00pm-7:00pm. Attendees will be able to tour the UM Shore Regional Health's Breast Center, learn more about the Breast Center's services and meet the staff.
    • Tree of Hope, Easton: To honor a loved one diagnosed with breast cancer, members of the public may come to the UM Shore Regional Health's Breast Center and hang a pink ribbon on the Tree of Hope, which is located in the Breast Center year round. The ribbons have space to write a loved one's name or message and can be done in honor or remembrance. Visitors may come to the Tree of Hope Monday through Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm.
    • Breast Cancer Support Groups, all locations:
        • Cambridge: Women Supporting Women Breast Cancer Group meets the 4th Tuesday of every month, 6:30pm, at the Christ Episcopal Church, Cambridge. For more information call 410-463-0946 or 410-228-3161.
        • Chestertown: Cancer Support Group meets the 4th Monday of every month, 7pm-9pm, at the Education Center, UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown. For more information call 410-778-7668, ext 2175 or email cnelson@chesterriverhealth.org.
        • Easton: The CARES Breast Cancer Support Group meets the 4th Tuesday of every month, 6pm-7:30pm, at the Cancer Center, UM Shore Regional Health, 509 Idlewild Avenue, Easton. For more information call 410-822-1000, ext 5411.
    • Special Groups:
        • Look Good, Feel Better: This is a free American Cancer Society (ACS) program open to all women with cancer and is held on the 3rd Monday every month, 10am-noon, at the Cancer Center, UM Shore Regional Health, 509 Idlewild Avenue, Easton. The program offers tips for hair care, skin care and make-up, samples, and access to the Wig Room. For more information about this group, call 410-822-1000, ext 5355.
        • Survivors Offering Support (SOS) program: A unique program that pairs women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer with trained volunteer mentors. Because SOS mentors are breast cancer survivors themselves, they can offer emotional support and insight to patients facing the same diagnosis, making the breast cancer journey an easier one to navigate. If you are in need of support or would like to become a mentor and would like more information, call Edla Coleman, SOS coordinator, at 410-822-1000, ext. 5866 or by e-mail at ecoleman@shorehealth.org.

UM Shore Regional Health provides a full array of diagnostic services, including mammography, advanced 3-D digital mammography, ultrasound, breast MRI and biopsies along with a survivorship program, support groups and other resources for patients, their family members, friends and loved ones. For more information about breast services, please visit www.umshoreregional.org.
