From the Executive Director

Greetings!

Did you know...

"Your local chamber of commerce is still one of the best ways to network with other entrepreneurs in virtually any community."
Tim Parker - writer for Yahoo! Finance, Benzinga, Business Insider, and Forbes

"When consumers know that a small business is a member of their local Chamber of Commerce, they are 44% more likely to think favorably of it, and they're a full 63% more likely to purchase goods or services from that company in the future."
Kathleen Lanza - Columnist for Money News Now

These are just some of the things being said about being a member of your local Chamber of Commerce, showing how important it is for local businesses to be part of the Chamber and for you to have that affiliation as one of your business credentials.

People like doing business with businesses that belong to their local Chamber of Commerce.  In fact, a national survey* of 2,000 adults revealed that being active - not just being a member, but being active - in your local Chamber of Commerce is an effective business strategy. Why? Because more than two-thirds of consumers believe that such companies use good business practices. They're considered to be reputable. Consumers sense that they care about their customers. And consumers feel good in knowing that these businesses are involved in the local community.

In addition, if a company shows that it's highly involved in its local chamber (i.e., serves on the Chamber Board or on a Chamber committee), consumers are 10% more likely to think that business' products stack up better against its competition. You could offer the very same products as your competitors, but consumers will perceive yours as superior because of your Chamber affiliation! That's a credential worth utilizing.

If you are not currently a member of the Chamber, perhaps you want to consider the above and join the Chamber. For more information, call me at 410-810-2968 or visit our website at www.kentchamber.org

If you are already a member, perhaps you want to examine whether you're effectively showing off your business credential of Chamber membership!

Here are some effective strategies for proclaiming you're a proud member of the Kent County Chamber of Commerce!

  • The easiest, most visible, no-cost way to boast about YOUR Chamber connection is by showing off your membership decal. You get a new one every year when you renew your membership. Take a stroll outside your front door; imagine you're coming in for the first time. Can you see your decal? Is it affixed at eye level, near the handle to your main entry doorway? Is the glass around it clean and free of other notices or stickers that might distract from it? Remember, this is part of your business strategy - make the decal work for you!
  • Do you include the Chamber's "Proud Member" logo on your letterhead, invoices and advertising materials? Think of how many pieces of mail and electronic communications you send out in a year. That's equal to the number of times you can say, "Hey, my business is a proud member of the Kent County Chamber of Commerce and we support our business community!"
  • Do you invite your business acquaintances to join you at Chamber events? That's a powerful way to show how well known and respected you are in your community!
  • Do you talk up your Chamber in the community? Do you share what's happening at the Chamber with your personal contacts? Remember, the Chamber works on behalf of the entire community, so it's very possible that everyone you meet has been touched by the Chamber is some way. Let folks know you're part of that success!
The Kent County Chamber of Commerce is here to provide opportunities for your business.  It's up to you how well you take advantage of those opportunities

* The study was conducted by The Schapiro Group, an Atlanta-based strategic consulting firm, commissioned by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE), in cooperation with the Western Association of Chamber Executives.

Conservation Event Called for Energy Wise Rewards

Customers in Maryland

Delmarva Power Urges All Customers to Conserve Energy

SALISBURY, Md. - Delmarva Power asks customers to conserve energy on Wednesday, as high temperatures are forecasted for the region. Power supply in the region is expected to be sufficient to meet anticipated high demand.

For those participating customers in Delmarva Power's Energy Wise Rewards program in Maryland, Wednesday will be a Peak Savings Day, and a conservation event will be called from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. This means that Delmarva Power will cycle participants' air conditioner compressors off and on for short intervals during these hours. Because the air conditioner fans will continue to run, most customers will not notice a temperature change in their homes, and those who do should experience only a 1- to 3-degree change. It may take up to a half-hour after the test event ends at 6 p.m. for air conditioners to resume normal operations.

Energy Wise Rewards is a voluntary program for Maryland customers, offering a choice of a programmable thermostat or an outdoor switch, which the utility installs at no charge to customers. During summer periods of peak electric demand, Energy Wise Rewards works to reduce electricity usage by cycling air conditioner compressors off and on for short periods during times of peak electricity use. Maryland customers will receive a bill reduction in return for allowing Delmarva Power to cycle their air conditioners a few days each year. Customers can learn more about Energy Wise Rewards by calling 1-866-353-5799 or visiting www.delmarva.com/rewards.

Delmarva Power asks all customers to conserve electricity. Customers can take simple conservation steps:

  • Set air-conditioning thermostats at 78 degrees and use an electric fan, which doesn't require as much energy, and the air will seem cooler without sacrificing comfort.
  • Keep window shades, blinds or drapes closed to block the sunlight during the hottest part of the day and to retain cooler air inside your home or business.
  • Limit the use of electrically heated water and turn off non-essential appliances and as many lights as possible.
  • Limit opening refrigerator and freezer doors.
  • Postpone using high-energy appliances like electric stoves, washing machines, dishwashers and dryers until the evening.

For more energy-saving information, visit www.delmarva.com. Follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/delmarvapower and Twitter at www.twitter.com/delmarvaconnect. Our mobile app is available at www.delmarva.com/mobileapp.

Wye River Upper School

Ribbon Cutting, Sept. 5

On Friday, September 5th at 10am The Wye River Upper School will host a ribbon cutting ceremony officially opening the doors to it's new home - the now renovated 1926 Centreville Armory located at 316 S. Commerce Street, Centreville, MD. The ceremony will include guest speaker, Governor Harry R. Hughes, remarks from Founding Executive Director, Chrissy Aull and tours of the building.   Members of the public are invited to join the celebration.

For the past 12 years, Wye River Upper School was located in temporary space rented from Chesapeake College.  "We are very grateful to Chesapeake College.  We enjoyed our partnership and look forward to continuing a strong relationship into the future.  The new space allows us to grow independently while strengthening our program dedicated to serving bright students with learning differences" said, Chrissy Aull.

The six million dollar renovation is the result of a five-year capital campaign to raise funds for the project.  To date, the school has raised more than five million dollars. "This team of fundraisers, mostly volunteers, never lost sight of the privilege it is to build this place for bright students with dreams and great potential. They deserve this. This is for them," added, Aull.

Wye River Upper School intends to raise the remaining funds over the course of the year in order to reduce any debt and keep the school in financial good health.  "We are very proud of the successful fundraising efforts to date and look forward to completing the campaign without having to take on any debt.  Our donors should be very proud of the investment they made in this facility and in the students of Wye River Upper School, both current and future" said, Tom Mendenhall, Director of School Advancement and Finance.

Students have already begun to fill the halls of the former Armory participating in 2 days of orientation.  "It's incredibly satisfying to see the looks on their faces as they explore their new, permanent home.  This has been a long time coming" added Aull. School starts on September 2nd.

To RSVP for the ceremony please call (410) 758-2922.  For more information about Wye River Upper School go to www.wyeriverupperschool.org.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (August 29, 2014)

UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown announces community celebration of new Emergency Department

University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown invites the public to Grand Opening and Community Open House for its new Emergency Department, set for Tuesday, September 16. The ceremonies begin at 5 p.m., followed by an open house and tours of the new department until 7 p.m.

The festivities will take place in front of the new, separate entrance to the Emergency Department located near the hospital's new Main Entrance. Visitors also will be able to preview the hospital Auxiliary's Gift Shop, which will be relocated just inside the new Main Entrance during the week prior to the Grand Opening.

"We're celebrating a major milestone in Chestertown as we open this state-of-the-art Emergency Department for the community it serves," says Ken Kozel, UM Shore Regional Health president and CEO, and host of the Grand Opening. The new ED will become operational in late September.

The $4.3 million Emergency Department was funded by University of Maryland Medical System, by a $900,000 grant for this renovation through the Maryland Hospital Association's Hospital Bond Project Review Program, and by support from the UM Chester River Health Foundation. The project was completed in two phases. The first phase included the creation of a new hospital entrance and lobby, and two new elevators. The second phase, which was the ED renovation and expansion, began in October, 2013.

The renovation increases the size for the ED from just over 4,500 square feet to nearly 8,000 square feet.Upgrades include:

  • A separate walk-in entrance that provides convenience for emergency patients and added security
  • for the entire hospital
  • Larger lobby and waiting room for patients and their families
  • Enclosed ambulance bay with access to life-saving technology
  • 18 patient rooms with added privacy and comfort
  • Private, specialized treatment rooms designated for behavioral health, pediatrics, trauma, women's health and more.
Volunteer team members will be on hand to guide guests and answer questions, and light refreshments will be served. Guests are asked to park in the hospital parking lot on Brown Street or other clearly marked spaces nearby; trams will be available to take guests right to the event.
