From the Executive Director
Greetings!
YES!!! Summer is here! I know there are those of you out there that love to pull on the sweaters, jeans and boots and venture outside in the cold and snow. But for all you others, (and that includes me!), summer is what we live for. The weather has been pretty close to perfect! It seems to make everything better when the sun is shining and flip-flops, shorts and T-shirts are the "costume de riguer".
Here at the Chamber we are putting the final touches on the 2014-2015 Kent County Chamber Business Directory. As soon as it arrives, a copy will be distributed to each of our members. Additional copies will be available at the Visitors Center in downtown Chestertown, the Kent County Tourism Development office at 400 High Street in Chestertown, and at the Chamber Booth at various events held throughout the year in the County, and at all Chamber functions. The Directory is the perfect way to get your name out there to local businesses, residents of Kent and surrounding counties, as well as those relocating to our area.
Speaking of ways to get your business noticed and your name out to others, have you ever considered hosting a Business-After-Hours? If you are interested in showcasing your business in another way, consider hosting a Chamber Business-After-Hours. We are currently looking for hosts for the months of July and August. For details, call me at the Chamber office at 410.810.2968.
I also invite you to submit announcements about your business or organization to be included in future Newsflashes and Newsletters. Let others know what you are doing. Has someone in your organization been promoted, or has your company or employee won an award? Or perhaps you are taking part in a local community project. Let me know, and I will help spread the word! - Your message should not be an advertisement but a news item of general interest to other Chamber members.
One last reminder: our Chamber committees are always looking for engaged members who can bring fresh ideas and alternative points of view. So if you have an interest in, or talents that could be beneficial to any of our Committees, Education, Legislative or Membership & Marketing, please contact me. Your participation and ideas are always welcome.
This Independence Day, let us all take a step back and cherish our lives and the country we live in while appreciating the sacrifices so many have made to give us independence today.
Wishing all of you a safe and happy 4th of July!
Loretta

Kent School Celebrates the Graduation of the Class of 2014
On June 11, families, friends, teachers and mentors gathered to honor the twenty members of Kent School's graduating class. The Class of 2014 is made up of a diverse group of students who were united as a group of close knit friends while retaining their individuality. "No matter how long they've been with us, each shared a special gift with the community. Their talents were on display in the classroom, on the athletic field, on the stage and as creative writers. We are going to miss them, and we are proud of what we know they will accomplish as leaders and scholars in high school and beyond," said Middle School Division Head, Debbie Williams.
Graduation speakers were Christina Bonass, Henry Parkhurst, and Maria van Venrooy. Each spoke of his or her Kent School experience from a different perspective, but all agreed that challenges made them stronger students, better friends, and more prepared for the future.
Members of Kent School's graduating class will be attending the following secondary schools:
The Charter School of Wilmington, Chincoteague High School, the Gunston School, Kent County High School, Mercersburg Academy, Northfield Mt. Herman, Queen Anne's County High School, St. James School, St. Mark's High School and Tower Hill School. Congratulations!

Easter Seals Camp Fairlee Celebrates 60 years!

Hello! You know our name, but do you know what we do? We are proud to be a new member of the chamber. Easter Seals Camp Fairlee has been providing recreation and respite services for children and adults with ALL types of disabilities since 1954. We do this primary through summer camp, weekend respites held year round, and travel trips. Being a highly specialized regional camp, we annually serve approximately 500 unique camp participants that come from every county in Maryland and Delaware, and some from other states as far away as Florida and Ohio. Participants last year ranged in age from 6 - 82. Betsy, from Chestertown, is one of our Camp Ambassadors this year. She has Down Syndrome and works at Washington College. Her family surprised her with a 50th birthday party recently and bought her a trip to Disney World through the Camp Fairlee Travel Trip program. Betsy also attends summer camp and respite weekends throughout the year. While campers enjoy a typical camp experience, swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, Camp Fairlee also provides rest and respite for caregivers. Betsy's caregiver is her niece, Barbara. Barbara says, "as a caregiver, I enjoy the respite time because I know she's at a place she enjoys". As we celebrate our 60th anniversary this year, we invite you to learn more about the history of Easter Seals Camp Fairlee, and our expanding vision for the future. Summer would be a great time for a camp tour. For more information, contact Ford Waggoner, Director of Marketing at fwaggoner@esdel.org.
