From the Executive Director
Greetings!
The Kent County Chamber of Commerce is off to an exciting start for 2014. We are seeing a marked increase in members and businesses participating in the Chamber, our activities, and our mission; to foster new growth in our county. The Kent County Chamber is here to serve and advance local and regional business strategies, policies and programs, and support the local business and community interests. Whether it's a start-up company seeking advice or bringing government representatives to speak to the businesses and community through our Legislative Breakfast Series, we're here for our members and the community.
Our Post-Session Legislative Wrap-Up Breakfast is scheduled for next Wednesday, April 9 at Heron Point in Chestertown. All of the Eastern Shore delegates, along with County Commissioners and other elected officials will be there. The deadline for registration for this breakfast is this Friday, April 4th. So while you're thinking about it, sign up now by calling or emailing the Chamber or going online to register. Registration links are included in the flyer later in this newsletter.
On Thursday, April 24, E.L.B., Incorporated will be hosting our monthly Business-After-Hours from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at 121 Flatland Road in Chestertown. Come and join the Chamber and E.L.B. for their anniversary celebration and get a behind-the-scenes look at their automotive facility. Please RSVP by April 14. Registration link is included in flyer later in this newsletter.
Tuesday, May 20 will bring the Education Breakfast featuring Dr. Karen Couch, Superintendent of Kent County Public Schools and a presentation of the Kent County High School's Career & Technology Education programs by Principal Tracey Williams and Kent County High School students. Do not miss this one! See the flyer later in this newsletter for more details.
Speaking of education, I was privileged to be part of the interview panel for the 2013-2014 Kent County "Teacher of the Year" and the Kent County Public Schools "Support Staff of the Year". To say I was blown away is an understatement. To a person, each of the 14 individuals interviewed were exceptional! Their expertise in each of their individual fields, and their pride and dedication to their jobs and the students of Kent County is absolutely amazing! Though their will only be one award given in each of the two categories, everyone is so deserving of recognition. The next time you see or meet one of our public school employees, thank them. They truly are unsung heroes.
Finally, I would be remiss if I did not thank Kent School's Tricia Cammerzell, Director of Development and Headmaster Chris Gorycki for graciously hosting the Chamber's March Business-After-Hours. We had a great turn-out of 30+ Chamber and community members. Great food and drink was provided courtesy of the Fish Whistle. Tricia provided the grand tour of Kent School for all attending. They really do a wonderful job for all the students there. Thank you Tricia and Chris!
I hope we have all put the snow shovels away for the last time this year. Happy Spring to all!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FIRST FRIDAY AT KENT COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY: OLD KENT QUILTERS REPRO BEE & STUDENT ART INSPIRED BY FRIDO KAHLO Chestertown, MD, March 31, 2014 - In April, the Chestertown Branch of Kent County Public Library will be exhibiting Vintage Revisited, which features quilt designs chosen and constructed by the Olde Kent Quilters Repro Bee, and artwork created by students from Friendship Montessori School.
The members of the Olde Kent Bee enjoy learning about quilting styles and fabrics of the 19th century. Vintage Revisited features quilts made as a "block of the month" project. Each month the members of the Bee learned about a famous quilt or the story of a quiltmaker, then made a block from the featured quilt. The brown and pink color scheme of the Vintage Revisited quilts reflects the popular color choices of the 19th century when many women wore brown and their daughters wore pink. While many of the quilts feature similar blocks, each member of the group put her blocks together in a unique design. These quilts will be displayed throughout the library. The students of Friendship Montessori School have put together an art exhibit that features paintings and clay pieces inspired by their recent studies of Frida Kahlo. The work of these talented young artists will be on display in the Children's Department. On First Friday, April 4, 2014, a reception celebrating this month's art exhibits will be held from 5-8pm at the Chestertown Branch. All are welcome to attend this family-friendly event. Artwork showcased at the First Friday reception will remain on display during the month of April. For more information about these events or to learn about becoming a featured artist at KCPL, please call 410.778.3636 or visit the Chestertown Branch at 408 High Street, Chestertown. |

Schooner SULTANA Kicks Off Its
2014 Sailing Season
with Students from Bayside Elementary
Chestertown, MD--Sixty fifth grade students from Bayside Elementary School in Queen Anne's County ventured out onto the Chester River on Monday, March 31, 2014 onboard the schooner SULTANA during the schooner's first educational sail of its 2014 sailing season. The Bayside Elementary students were the first of more than 5,000 children from six Maryland counties to participate in under-sail educational programs onboard SULTANA in 2014.
Since her launch in 2001, SULTANA's Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) certified under-sail programs have become a core component of the Chesapeake Bay Studies curriculum for Calvert, Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne's and Talbot counties, as well as for individual public and private schools from Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Delaware. "Onboard SULTANA we provide an experience that simply can't be duplicated in the classroom," said SULTANA's on-board Education Director Caitlin Ramsburg. "When you combine the hands on experiences of SULTANA with the pre-trip curriculum that teachers provide in the classroom, you create a truly powerful educational experience."
The Bayside Elementary students sailing on SULTANA during the first week of April are participating in a hands-on program that explores both the history and environment of the Chesapeake. Activities include; setting SULTANA's sails and learning to steer the 50-ton schooner; trawling the Chester River to collect fish and crabs; learning about the physiology and life-cycles of the animals and plants that live in the Chesapeake; testing the water for salinity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity and nutrient content; and learning about how sailors lived in the 18th century. In addition to sailing on SULTANA, students also spend two hours exploring historic Chestertown, learning about its history as a colonial port, and playing traditional colonial children's game behind the town's iconic White Swan Tavern.
The schooner SULTANA will remain in Chestertown for the remainder of April, sailing with students from Queen Anne's and Caroline counties

Delmarva Power Makes Energy Efficiency Presentation
Salisbury University Students Learn about Importance of Saving Energy
SALISBURY, Md. -Members of Delmarva Power's Demand Side Management team made a special presentation today to a group of Environmental Studies students at Salisbury University.
The team members were invited to provide information to the students about Delmarva Power's portfolio of residential and commercial energy efficiency programs.
"We always welcome the opportunity to talk to customers about how simple steps can make a difference when it comes to saving energy," said William Ellis, Delmarva Power Demand Side Management manager.
He added that Delmarva Power's energy efficiency programs are designed to help meet Gov. Martin O'Malley's EmPOWER Maryland initiative to help the state reduce energy consumption by 15 percent by 2015.
Students also watched a utility company trade ally do a walk-through energy assessment and propose energy efficiency upgrades for the Environmental Studies department building.
"I think Delmarva Power's presentation added some real-world value to the students' learning experience," said Bill Nelson, Environmental Studies lecturer and program specialist. "Reading a textbook about the importance of energy efficiency is good, but having Delmarva Power's subject matter experts on hand to demonstrate actual energy efficiency concepts proved to be very beneficial to the students."
For additional information and updates about Delmarva Power's energy efficiency programs, visit www.delmarva.com, follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/delmarvapower and on Twitter at www.twitter.com/delmarvaconnect, or call 1-866-353-5799.
