WELCOME !

From the Executive Director

Greetings & Happy New Year!

As the new year begins, it seems like a good time to reflect on what has transpired over the last year and what our hopes and plans are for the coming year.

2013 was another busy year for the Chamber.  We kicked off the year with the 2012 Annual Excellence in Business Awards at the Chester River Yacht & Country Club.  We had quite a turn-out and it was a wonderful evening celebrating the "Best of the Best" of our membership.  Again, congratulations to all of our award winners from 2012.

We continue to maintain our membership level at just under 300 members. If you know of anyone who could benefit from membership with the Chamber, please have them give me a call.

Both Pre- and Post-Legislative Breakfasts held in February and April, hosted by Heron Point were well-attended with many of our local legislators present.  These are always very informative events, with the opportunity for you to talk with our representatives one-on-one.  So please remember to reserve your space for the upcoming Post-Legislative breakfast to be held in April.

The second annual Regional Chamber Mixer in May, hosted by all five mid-shore counties (Kent, Queen Anne's, Caroline, Talbot & Dorchester) and held at Chesapeake College, was a great success and one which will again be held in May of this year.

Also in May, our Chamber was able to award a scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to a deserving Kent County High School graduating Senior, Haleigh Baxter.  How better to serve our community than by helping one of our own young people further their education.  Congratulations Haleigh!

I would like thank the following member businesses who hosted our monthly Business-After-Hours events held throughout the 2013: The Kent County Public Library, Chestertown RiverArts, Funk & Bolton, P.A., and Champion Realty. Your participation and contribution to the Chamber and to your fellow members is greatly appreciated and provides invaluable opportunities for networking and making that face-to-face contact that can broaden your customer base and enhance your bottom line.

Despite the snowstorm, the annual Holiday Gala held at JR's Past Time Pub was very well attended, with over 100 guests. The food, courtesy of JR Alfree and his staff, was fabulous!  and the door prizes were plentiful, due to the generosity of our members.  A big thank you goes to those members who so generously donated gifts.  They are:  Affinity Business & Technology Solutions, Anthony's Flowers & Landscaping, Inc., Atlantic Broadband, CNB, Cross Street Realtors, LLC, Crow Vineyard & Winery, LLC, Houck's Menswear, Houston's Dockside Emporium, JBK ACE Hardware & Rental, Loving Touch Homecare, LLC, Pip's Liquors, River City Upholstery, Salon, Sears, ShoreToBeFun.com, and Unity Landscape Design/Build.  Your contributions to this event not only helped make the evening a success, they also raised $300 from door prize ticket sales.  The proceeds from the ticket sales were donated to the Kent County Food Pantry.  What a great way to end the year with good food and good

friends and being able to give back to our community!

As of January 1st, the Chamber Board welcomes two new Board members:  Bob Grace of Dixon Valve & Coupling and Linda Dawson of Kent Forward.  Both of these individuals bring a wealth of business knowledge and experience.  We look forward to having them as part of the Chamber's leadership over the next three years.

2014 promises to be a busy year as well, beginning with the Pre-Legislative Breakfast held yesterday, followed by the 2013 Annual Excellence in Business Awards Gala to be held at the Prince Theatre at the Garfield Center for the Arts on January 31st.  This promises to be another fabulous event with a Tuscan theme this year.  So mark your calendars.  See the invitation later in this newsletter.  February's Business-After-Hours will be hosted by the Kent County Public Library with the date to be determined.  The April Business-After-Hours will be hosted by Kent School on April 17.  We are still looking for a host for March.  If you are interested, please give me a call at the Chamber.

One last note, we are still soliciting nominations for awards in the following categories.  Business Leader of the Year, Environmental Awareness, Outstanding Business of the Year, Community Service, and Best New Business.  You can nominate your own business or another deserving business.  A link to the nomination form can be found later in this newsletter.  Remember  to include the reason why you are making the nomination.  The deadline for nominations is January 15!

I wish each and everyone of you a happy, healthy and prosperous new year!

Eastern Shore Lawyers Lead State In Pro Bono Service

A report released in late November shows Eastern Shore attorneys leading the state in providing pro bono legal services to their communities. The "Current Status of Pro Bono Service Among Maryland Lawyers" was compiled by ANASYS, Inc., for the Maryland Administrative Office of the Courts, and is based on 2012 data.

Maryland courts established a goal of 50 hours or more of pro bono service each year for full-time attorneys, with an emphasis on assistance to people of limited means. Lawyers certified to practice in the state are required to report annually on their pro bono activities. For reporting purposes, the state is divided into Eastern, Western, Southern, Central and Capital regions.

Sandy Brown, Executive Director of Mid-Shore Pro Bono, expressed her pride in what the report reveals about the volunteer efforts of Eastern Shore attorneys. "Overall, we have some of the state's most generous lawyers here on the Mid-Shore, in terms of the time they donate to people who need legal assistance," she said.

The Eastern Region leads Maryland in full-time lawyers providing at least some pro bono services, with 75.1 percent, just ahead of the Western Region's 75.0 percent. Rural areas show more pro bono participation than the more populated Central and Capital regions. Queen Anne's County has the highest attorney pro bono rate at 81.8 percent, with Talbot County coming in third statewide at 81.0 percent.

When it comes to meeting the 50-hours-a-year goal, Eastern Region attorneys further outpace their counterparts in the rest of the state, with almost 37 percent of the region's full-time lawyers offering at least 50 hours of pro bono service in 2012, compared to the runner-up Western Region's 32.8 percent and 22.2 percent for the state as a whole.

Talbot County attorneys lead Maryland with 48.8 percent meeting the 50-hour goal, a number that has increased over each of the past two years. Of the five counties in Mid-Shore Pro Bono's service area, three others join Talbot in the state's top ten for meeting the goal, with Queen Anne's County ranked fifth, Caroline sixth and Dorchester tenth. Kent County ranked sixteenth out of the 23 counties and Baltimore City.

Overall, lawyers certified to practice in the state of Maryland reported slightly lower rates of pro bono activities from the previous year. However, the Eastern Region posted increases in 2012, both in percentages of those providing pro bono services and percentages of those meeting the 50-hour goal.

With regard to the type of pro bono services provided, the report showed almost 58 percent of the Eastern Region's attorneys offered assistance to individuals of limited means in 2012.

While Mid-Shore Pro Bono also offers some specialized services without regard to the client's income, its primary mission is to provide access to free or reduced-fee civil legal services to low-income individuals, connecting those in need of assistance with attorneys willing to provide pro bono time.

The report demonstrated the success of the organization's efforts. Of the hours Eastern Region lawyers provided to individuals of limited means, more than 30 percent was on cases that came from a pro bono or legal services organization such as Mid-Shore Pro Bono, the highest percentage in the state.

With ongoing economic issues still affecting homeowners and their mortgages, the report placed special emphasis on the Foreclosure Prevention Pro Bono Project (FPPB), a program coordinated by the Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland to help homeowners who need legal counsel in the foreclosure process.

It showed the Eastern Region having the second highest percentage of lawyers providing FPPB assistance, at 6.4 percent, and Talbot County ranking third statewide, at 10.3 percent. Attorneys provide assistance to homeowners in distress through Mid-Shore Pro Bono's Foreclosure Clinic and Foreclosure Prevention Workshops.

Brown applauds the pro bono efforts of the lawyers with whom her organization works and encourages the rest of the community to add its support. "We always have known that our Eastern Shore attorneys are amazingly generous with their time, both to our clients and to Mid-Shore Pro Bono itself," she said.

"It's exciting to have this validated and demonstrated in numbers for everyone to see. However," she added, "to ensure our doors remain open to provide this much needed service, we still need our community's financial support."

The full report offers additional information and refinement of the data by size of firm, type of law practiced and other criteria.

It may be found online at www.courts.state.md.us/probono/pdfs/probonoreport2012.pdf.

For more information or to make a donation, call Mid-Shore Pro Bono at 410-690-8128 or visit www.midshoreprobono.org.

Delmarva Power and PJM Continue Call for Energy Conservation

Frigid Temperatures Push Electricity Use Higher

SALISBURY, Md. - Delmarva Power, on behalf of PJM Interconnection, the electricity grid operator for more than 51 million people in 13 states and the District of Columbia, is asking its customers to voluntarily conserve electricity.

PJM's call for conservation was promoted by extremely high demand for electricity because of continuing frigid weather and the weather-related loss of some generation. PJM is implementing all emergency procedures to ensure all generation is available.

Demand for electricity is expected to increase as the extremely cold weather lingers for the next several days. Delmarva Power and PJM ask customers to consider conserving electricity, if health permits - especially today from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Customers can take these simple electricity conservation steps:

  • Set thermostats lower than usual, if health permits.
  • Turn off electric lights and appliances that you do not need or are not using.
  • Gather in a central room where you have alternative heat. At night, cover windows with drapes or blankets to minimize heat loss. During the day, open blinds to let sun warm the space.

Conserving electricity will help ensure adequate power supplies. Delmarva Power will continue to carefully monitor power supply conditions.

Delmarva Power will ensure that all available personnel are ready to respond to any service interruptions. Customers are asked to please call in any outages and stay away from any downed wires. To report outages or downed wires, please call 1-800-898-8042 (New Castle, Cecil and Harford counties) or 1-800-898-8045 (Kent and Sussex counties and the Eastern Shore of Maryland). Follow the prompts and ask for a call back to confirm that power has been restored. Outages also may be reported through www.delmarva.com or through our mobile app. For natural gas emergencies in New Castle County, call 1-302-454-0317.

Maryland Business Reception

January 16, 2014 - Annapolis, MD

Maryland Chamber President
Kathy Snyder to Retire

Kathleen T. Snyder, the long-term executive of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce, has announced she will retire June 30, 2014. Snyder has served as President/CEO of the statewide chamber since October 1999.

"Kathy has provided outstanding leadership and dramatically changed the Maryland Chamber into a powerhouse organization that truly helps employers across the State," said Thomas H. Graham, Board Chairman.  Graham is Vice President of People Strategy and Human Resources at Pepco Holdings, Inc.

Graham credited Snyder with modernizing and strengthening the Maryland Chamber over the past 14 years.  "Her vision, persistence, dedication and hard work have made a difference for every business in this state," Graham said.  "From effective lobbying to beneficial C-level networking, the State Chamber clearly is the voice of business in Maryland, thanks in large part to Kathy's leadership."

Most recently, Snyder won board support to convene and personally staff a statewide coalition of more than 60 business organizations to advance Maryland's position as a global leader in private sector job creation and business investment.  The Maryland Competitiveness Coalition has worked for more than a year in amassing statewide support for a new vision that focuses on innovation, technology and entrepreneurship.  The coalition recently sponsored an economic summit that garnered support of more than 200 business leaders throughout Maryland.

Prior to her appointment at the Maryland Chamber, Snyder served as the President/CEO of the Alexandria, VA Chamber for more than seven years (1992-1999) and as the Executive Vice President of the Prince George's County Chamber for more than five years (1987-1992).  She has won the Maryland and Virginia chamber executive of the year awards in both states (2007 and 1996) in addition to numerous other awards including as a three-time winner of Maryland's Top 100 Women award.
