From the Executive Director
Greetings
Summer is almost here and aside from that hot spell last week, the weather has been pretty kind to us here on the Eastern Shore, so far. The weather today is pristine and makes me wish I was outside enjoying it rather than just seeing it through the window from my desk.
On April 27, the Chamber held a Ribbon Cutting for the newly opened Beverly's Family Restaurant at 11 Washington Square, Washington Avenue in Chestertown. Beverly Chance, the owner along with her daughter and other staff members are serving breakfast and lunch on Sundays from 6:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M. and Monday through Saturday from 6:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M. Stop in and check out them out for breakfast or lunch. (See photo later in this newsletter.)
May 29th brought the Second Annual Five-County Mixer, sponsored by Kent, Queen Anne's, Caroline, Talbot and Dorchester Counties, which was again graciously hosted by Chesapeake College. A big thanks to the College's President, Barbara Viniar for her hospitality to all of the Chambers. We had a great turn-out with approximately 200 in attendance. Fabulous door prizes were offered by each Chamber. I want to thank Greta Summers and Osprey Point Inn, and Mark & Suzanne Einstein of Blue Crab Charters for their very generous door prize donations. You helped make the evening that much more fun. Thank you!
The Chamber booth at Tea Party this year was another great success. The booth, provided by the Chamber, was manned throughout the day by CASA of Queen Anne's & Kent Counties, Chestertown RiverArts, United Way of Kent County and the Upper Shore Regional Council. Each of these businesses had the opportunity to promote solely their business during their time at the booth, at no cost to them; something to keep in mind for your business next year.
Additionally, I would like to extend a special thanks to Steve Atkinson of ShoreToBeFun.com and Local In Kent for taking the time to set up and break down the Chamber table and tent, and transport the Chamber Directories and Maps to and from the event at the beginning and end of the day. Thank you Steve!
We hope to provide this same marketing opportunity for our member businesses during Pirates & Wenches Weekend in Rock Hall in August. Stay tuned for further announcements on this.
The 2013 Senior Awards Ceremony was held on May 22 at Kent County High School. Over $100,000 in scholarships were awarded by a large array of local businesses and service organizations. The Chamber was pleased and proud to present the 2013 Chamber Scholarship Award of $1,000 to Haleigh M. Baxter, a graduating senior who will be attending Chesapeake College in the fall. Congratulations Haleigh!
Work is currently in progress on the 2013-2014 Chamber Business Directory. If you have not yet returned your Membership Directory Update Request confirming that your information to be printed in the Directory is correct, (or with changes to be made), please do so today! Friday is the deadline. If no confirmation that your information is correct, or changes to be made are received, the information currently on file is what will be printed in the upcoming Directory.
Until next month, enjoy this beautiful weather!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OLD GLORY!
June 14 is traditionally known as Flag Day, and on this day we celebrate the Star-Spangled Banner and all it represents. Flag Day is believed to have started in 1885 when B. J. Cigrand, a school teacher in Fredonia, Wisconsin, arranged for his students to observe June 14 as Flag Birthday in celebration of the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of the Stars and Stripes.
As we salute our flag, we are saluting the men and women who have served this great country throughout its history. We thank each and every member of our armed forces for their service and dedication to our country and its citizens. Many have given their lives to defend our freedoms. We will never forget.

May a Record Month for Sultana
1,400 Students and Teachers Venture Out Onto the Chesapeake With Sultana Projects
_________________________________________
Thanks to an expansion of its paddling programs and the continuing popularity of its educational field-trips on the schooner SULTANA, Sultana Projects recorded its most productive month ever in May, providing on-the-water educational programs for 1,400 students and teachers from 12 Maryland counties and the District of Columbia. Sultana Projects worked with an average of 60 students a day in May, with each student spending approximately five hours on the water. "Our staff was all over the Chesapeake this month," said Sultana Vice President Chris Cerino. "We worked with students in our core counties of Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne's and Talbot, but also hosted programs as far away as St. Mary's, Harve de Grace, Annapolis, the Patuxent River, and the Nanticoke River." Thanks to the Chesapeake Watershed Initiative (CWI), an ongoing partnership between Sultana, NOAA, the National Geographic Society, and the Maryland Geographic Alliance, many of the teachers bringing their students to a Sultana program in May were participating in their second or even third program with Sultana this school year. Commented Cerino, "CWI has made it possible for us to work with many of our teachers in the winter months, giving them strategies, training, and equipment that we have put to good use with their students in the field this spring." Incredibly, many of the students that sailed or paddled with Sultana Projects in May were getting out on the water for the very first time. In the words of one teacher who took her class aboard Sultana while the schooner was docked on the Severn River, "My students thoroughly enjoyed themselves. For most of them, it was not only their first time on a boat, but also the first time they have ever been to Annapolis. I cannot thank you and your crew enough for allowing them to experience something completely new and learn quite a bit in the process. It is a day many of them won't soon forget."
About Sultana Projects
Sultana Projects connects people to the Chesapeake Bay's history, ecology and culture, inspiring them to join us in preserving and restoring America's largest estuary.
