IN MEMORIAM

William David McIntire
1925 - 2013

Waterfall
From the Executive Director

Greetings,

I recently visited friends in the great southwest state of Arizona, the 48th state in the Union.  What a beautiful area of the country with warm temperatures and NO humidity.  Quite a change from here on the east coast.  The terrain is totally different than what we are used to; desert sands and mountains covered with prickly pear, barrel and the icon of the Arizona desert, Saguara (sa-WHAR-o) cacti.

After spending a week learning about the Arizona desert, the vegetation and the wildlife, I was struck to see such lush vegetation when I returned home. Though there are many beautiful and amazing areas of this great country, it is remarkable what a beautiful area we live in here on the Eastern Shore and particularly, here in Kent County.  It is no wonder so many of us who were born and raised here stay, and those of us who are "come here's" came and stayed.  It is a wonderful area to work, live, raise our children and play.  The sense of community is strong.

Though times have been tough economically, there are small signs pointing towards recovery and hopefully, this trend will continue to improve for all of our businesses here in this wonderful place we call Kent County.  The Chamber is here to help your business in any way it can.  Whether it be connecting you with the right resources, providing you with networking opportunities, helping you get the word out about your business or providing you with benefits to strengthen, improve and increase your business.  Please do not hesitate to call the Chamber office with any questions, comments or suggestions.

On another note, applications are being received and reviewed for the Chamber's 2013 Scholarship, being offered to a deserving high school senior.  The announcement and presentation of the Scholarship Award will made at the Kent County High School (KCHS) Senior Awards Ceremony on May 22nd at 6:30 P.M. at the KCHS auditorium in Worton.

We are beginning the production of the 2013-2014 Chamber Business Directory.  To ensure accurate listings in the Directory, Membership Directory Update Requests will be  sent out to each of our members within the next week.  Please make sure to review the information the Chamber has for you and your business when you receive it and return the signed forms to the Chamber.  Don't assume that we know if there have been any changes to your information.  Even if there are no changes, we ask that you please sign and return the form to confirm that.

Plans are underway for the 2nd Annual Regional Mixer to be held on Wednesday, May 29th at the Caroline Center at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills.  This is your opportunity to meet and mingle with, not only business leaders from Kent County, but also from our neighboring counties of Queen Anne's, Talbot, Caroline and Dorchester - a great way to expand your circle of contacts.  So mark your calendars!    (See the notice later in this newsletter.)

The Chamber will once again sponsor a booth at the Chestertown Tea Party Festival on May 25th to be manned by our Chamber members.  We are currently taking reservations for space at the Chamber Booth.  If you would like to work the Booth and promote "your" business, please contact me at the Chamber.  You may sign up in one-hour increments for as many as you would like.  First come, first served!

Finally, it is with great sadness that I tell you of the passing of David McIntire, Chamber Board president, 1997 & 1998.  Please see his memoriam later in this newsletter.

Sincerely,

 Loretta

In Memoriam
William Dave McIntire
1925 - 2013

W. David McIntire of Chestertown, Maryland died peacefully on Friday, April 25, 2013 at Safe Haven Manor in Sudlersville, MD.

Dave was born on April 21, 1925 in Media, Pennsylvania, the son of the late William McIntire and Martha Collins. He was a long time resident of Swarthmore, PA, moving to Chestertown after his retirement in 1986.

After graduation from Swarthmore High School, Dave attended Pennsylvania Maritime Academy where he was commissioned in the United State Merchant Marines. During World War II, he made several convoy trips to the Mediterranean as a merchant mariner and then transferred to active duty in the United States Navy, serving on destroyers in the South Pacific. Dave maintained, until the end of life, that nothing had given him more pride than his service to the country during that period. He was truly one of the "greatest generation". He left the Navy in 1947 to attend Temple University, graduating in 1951, and then joined Catalytic Construction Company working there as Vice President of Labor Relations and Safety until his retirement. Dave was also a lifetime member of the Swarthmore Fire Company.

A lifelong sailor, Dave spent hours on the water, cruising the Chesapeake Bay and the New England coast, sailing to Maine with his wife Kelley aboard his beloved "WAWA". He was a board member of the Chester River Yacht and Country Club and a Commodore for two years. He was also a founding member of the Davis Creek Yacht Club.

Dave believed in giving back to his community and served on the Chester River Hospital Foundation Board with a particular commitment to the Chester River Manor. A member of the Kent County Chamber of Commerce and its president for two years, he was also foreman of the Queen Anne's County Grand Jury, whose recommendations led to the formation of the County's Alcohol and Drug Commission. Dave was a founding member of  SCORE Upper Shore Chapter 670 and served as an active member until his death.  He was a participant in the Chestertown 300 Committee, co-chairing the parade that marked the close of the Town's celebration of its 300-year history. A member of the Chestertown Lions Club, he proudly wore his "Curmudgeon" name tag.

Dave is survived by his wife, Kelley; daughters, Kathleen Cole and her husband Brian of Chester Heights, PA and Barbara Tibbetts and her husband Douglas of Wilmington, DE; a son, Scott McIntire and his wife Jill of Portland, OR and five much loved grandchildren, Anderson Bowes, Paige Tibbetts, Will Tibbetts, Quinn McIntire, and Sean McIntire.

A celebration of Dave's life will be held on Thursday, May 9, at 5:30 pm at the Chester River Yacht and Country Club. His family invites all Dave's friends to join them in raising a toast to a life fully lived. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Fund at http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/donate.aspx.

NEWS FROM & FOR CHAMBER MEMBERS

Kent Forward Logo

I appreciated the Chamber of Commerce alerting its members about my recent visit to the CBG to talk about the Kent Forward Initiative, but I do need to clarify an important issue.

In summing up the origins of Kent Forward, the meeting notice submitted by the Conservative Breakfast Group, incorrectly attributed to me the idea that when it comes to hiring new employees our company, Dixon Valve, is "handicapped" by a lack of qualified Kent County High School graduates.  This is not true and I certainly have not meant to give that impression during the presentations I have made about Kent Forward.  To the contrary, Dixon hires many Kent County High School graduates, and they are people who bring a lot of talent to our company.  Kent Forward is about honestly assessing where we are as a community, recognizing the importance of education, and giving our young people the best possible start in life.  Kent Forward is a partner with the school system.  We have begun a close collaboration with its leadership, and have been working extensively with Ed Silver, the Supervisor of Education Services in the Superintendent's Office.  Working together, our goal is to bring Kent County Schools from the bottom quartile to the top tier in state performance rankings.  We will give young families another reason to move to, or stay in, Kent County to raise their children.

We recently learned that some local residents are using Kent Forward's name making demands on the schools.  These people are expressing their views as individuals not Kent Forward.

As a community project, we welcome residents who wish to share their ides, concerns and talents.  We have an executive director, Linda Dawson, who is coordinating that input and building a list of people willing to volunteer their expertise and time in ways that will help the schools.  Please contact Linda at kentforward@gmail.com or 410-708-6218 to learn more and to get involved.

Sincerely,

Dick Good
