From the Executive Director
Greetings,
Spring has arrived and along with it is the promise of warm weather, spring flowers, the opportunity to get outside, NCAA basketball playoffs and the arrival of the "Boys of Summer". And speaking of baseball and pitches, I thought this might be a good time to "pitch" the Chamber of Commerce and our efforts to be your leading advocate for business.
Merriam-Webster defines a chamber of commerce as an association of business people that promotes commercial and industrial interests in the community. The Oxford Dictionary defines a chamber of commerce as a local association to promote and protect the interests of the business community in a particular place. Wikipedia says it's a local organization of businesses whose goal is to promote the interests of businesses.
No matter who's saying it, it comes out the same...it's about promoting the interests of businesses. Those interests include legislation that affects our businesses, economic development, tourism, community well-being, and education to name a few.
The Kent County Chamber of Commerce is about promoting the interests of our member businesses, which we attempt to do in various ways. We provide networking opportunities through our breakfasts, joint chamber activities, after-hour networking events and fundraisers. We provide educational opportunities through our affiliation with SCORE and their learning series seminars. We provide community exposure for your business with other Chamber members as a whole, through our website, publications, advertisements and promotional materials. To that end, there are three upcoming events that will be instrumental in promoting some these aforementioned interests.
On Tuesday, April 9th, there will be a presentation of the Kent Forward initiative at Galena Middle School at 6:30 PM. This event is free and open to the public. Please think about taking an hour of your time to hear about Kent Forward and their goal of supporting Kent County Public Schools in achieving "Top Five in Five" - to see our community schools ranked in the top five public school systems in Maryland within five years. A first-rate school system is imperative to the successful future of Kent County.
On Wednesday, April 10 at 8:30 A.M., the Chamber will be hosting our Legislative Wrap-Up Breakfast at Heron Point. This is your opportunity to hear from our elected officials, both local and regional, about what has transpired in the most recent legislative session and how it will affect our businesses, our community and ourselves. This event is also open to the public. Registration is $12. All registrations must be received no later than tomorrow, Friday, April 5.
On Thursday, April 11th, Chestertown RiverArts will be hosting the Chamber's April Business-After-Hours from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at their studio at 315 High Street, Suite 106. If you have not been by Chestertown RiverArts, please do so next Thursday. The studio is beautiful and this will be a great opportunity to learn more about them and network with local business people. Don't forget to bring your business cards!
More information on each of these events can be found later in this news letter.
As a member of the Kent County Chamber of Commerce, you have a voice, and our Board is interested in what you have to say. We will consider any and all ideas that help us promote the Chamber and our members, whether it's business-to-business or business-to-community. We want to be your greatest business asset! Bring your thoughts/ideas/suggestions to any Board member and help us help you!
Thanks,
Loretta

SDA Invites Applications for Renewable Energy System and Energy Efficiency Improvement Projects
WASHINGTON, March 29, 2013 (excerpts) - Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced that USDA is seeking applications to provide assistance to agricultural producers and rural small businesses for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. Funding is available from USDA's Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) remains focused on carrying out its mission, despite a time of significant budget uncertainty. Today's announcement is one part of the Department's efforts to strengthen the rural economy.
REAP, authorized by the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008, (Farm Bill) is designed to help agricultural producers and rural small businesses reduce energy costs and consumption and help meet the Nation's critical energy needs. USDA is accepting the following applications:
- Renewable energy system and energy efficiency improvement grant applications and combination grant and guaranteed loan applications until April 30, 2013;
- Renewable energy system and energy efficiency improvement guaranteed loan only applications until July 15, 2013;
- Renewable energy system feasibility study grant applications through April 30, 2013.
More information on how to apply for funding is available in the March 29, 2013 Federal Register, pages 19183-19190.
Since the passage of the 2008 Farm Bill and through the end of Fiscal Year 2012, REAP has funded nationwide over 6,800 renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, feasibility studies, energy audits, and renewable energy development assistance projects.
Examples include Edaleen Cow Power LLC, located near Lynden, Washington, which received a REAP loan and grant combination to install an anaerobic digester and sell the resulting electricity to a utility. The project is anticipated to generate 4,635 Megawatt hours per year. Manure produced by Edaleen Dairy's 2,450-head herd is the sole feedstock for the project and the dairy benefits from the bedding byproduct the digester produces. Also, in Augusta, Wisconsin, farmer Matthew Gabler received a grant to assist in installation of an 11 kilowatt wind turbine to produce approximately 29,000 kilowatt-hours a year for his farm.
This funding is an example of the many ways that USDA is helping revitalize rural economies to create opportunities for growth and prosperity, support innovative technologies, identify new markets for agricultural producers, and better utilization of our nation's natural resources.

In January, nearly 200 people attended a series of four Maryland Transportation Plan (MTP) Stakeholder Roundtable Workshops hosted by the Maryland Department of Transportation. The Roundtables were held in Frederick, Hanover, Chestertown and Greenbelt, and the small group discussions that were part of the workshop format provided valuable input concerning the wide-ranging transportation needs and issues faced by local communities and the State in general.
Please click here for a Summary Report reflecting the input received from all four Roundtable meetings. Also, please click here for the MTP newsletter on current MTP activities. This information is also available via the Maryland Transportation Plan website www.mdot.maryland.gov/MTP, along with summaries from each of the individual workshops. Please visit the website for periodic updates, and to access the MTP public survey, which we encourage you to complete, and hope you will share with your colleagues, friends and neighbors.
Your contributions are valued and are helping to shape the 2035 Maryland Transportation Plan and inform important transportation investments in the years to come. Thank you again for your interest and participation.
Sincerely,
