From the Executive Director

Greetings,

How do you spell Economic Development for Kent County?

E-D-U-C-A-T-I-O-N

On Wednesday, February 27, over 100 Chamber members, school administrators, teachers, students, parents, business owners and community members gathered at Washington College to hear Dick Goodall of Dixon Valve talk about how we can all work together as a community to support Kent County Public Schools in achieving "Top Five in Five Years" - to see our community schools ranked in the top five public school systems in Maryland in five years.

As noted by Dave Wheelan in the Chestertown Spy:

"In a passionate plea for community engagement to move Kent County Public Schools to Maryland's top tier, Dixon Valve CEO Richard Goodall announced at a recent Chamber breakfast the formation of Kent Forward, a private sector initiative to support the county's struggling schools.

With his own realization that Dixon's ability to recruit top talent was handicapped by declining test scores, Goodall enlisted the help of Washington College and The Chester River Health Center to form the coalition that will provide resources, volunteer time, and encourage parental involvement.

...Goodall makes a strong case that Kent's business community must take a pro-active role in improving local schools.

Using techniques borrowed from the private sector, Kent Forward will work with the school system to identify important benchmarks that challenge the entire community, Goodall said."

A video of Mr. Goodall's presentation can be found at http://chestertownspy.com/2013/02/28/dixon-ceo-goodall-announces-kent-forward-for-kent-county-public-schools/

If you were unable to attend this past Wednesday, please take a few minutes to view this video.  This is not just a school system issue, nor just a County Commissioner issue, nor just a parental issue.  This is a community-wide issue.

The Kent County Chamber of Commerce fully supports this initiative and we hope you do too!  Together we can achieve the goal of Kent County Public Schools being in the Top 5 in Five Years.  Together we can make this happen! - For the sake of our children.  For the sake of our county.

Thanks,

Loretta

March 7 event to include screening of comic documentary
Dislecksia, panel discussion with film's award-winning director

CHESTERTOWN, MD-Radcliffe Creek School and Washington College will co-host a special evening Thursday, March 7, centered on a new comic documentary film and the serious issues of dyslexia it explores. The event will begin at 7:00 p.m. with a screening of
Dislecksia: The Movie in Decker Theatre, Gibson Center for the Arts, on the College campus. The movie will be followed by a panel discussion with the film's award-winning director, Harvey Hubbell V, and other special guests with expertise in dyslexia, including
teachers, parents and students.

Dyslexia is a condition that makes it difficult to learn to read. In his good-humored documentary,
Dislecksia: The Movie, dyslexic director Harvey Hubbell V - with assistance from dyslexic writer Jeremy Brecher and several dyslexic crew members - presents the latest scientific knowledge about dyslexia and the experiences of dyslexics.
Viewers will learn a lot about the causes and effects of dyslexia and what can be done about it.

About one American in seven has some degree of dyslexia. With some special techniques, taught or self-invented, most dyslexics can learn to function normally, and many prove themselves to be brilliant, talented and successful. Dislecksia give dyslexics and their families hope, as well as a crash course in how to keep smiling.

Both the screening and the panel discussion are free and open to the public. Support comes from the Gibson-Wagner Psychology Department Fund and the William James Forum at Washington College, the Brampton Bed and Breakfast Inn in Chestertown, and
Radcliffe Creek School.

Radcliffe Creek School is an independent day school designed for students between the ages of 5 and 14 with diagnosed learning differences, including dyslexia. Offering a 3:1 student-to-teacher ratio and a multi-sensory, research-based teaching approach,Radcliffe provides a highly individualized learning environment.
