From the Executive Director

Greetings!

I hope that you and yours made it through the storm last week with minimal or no damage.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have lost so much.

It's business as usual here, at the Chamber... but of course, isn't that what the Chamber is all about?  Business.

With the holidays fast approaching, we are busy here at the Chamber office planning for our upcoming events including the Holiday Gala on December 11, which will be hosted this year by Chuck Ministero of Uncle Charlie's Bistro.  The pre-Session Legislative Breakfast is scheduled to be held on January 7 and  the Annual Excellence in Business Awards Event is planned for January 25.  More details on all of these events will be sent as they become available.

Work has begun on the Chamber's annual Chamber of Commerce Kent County Map for 2013 to be published in January.  The map is distributed throughout the county and region to visitors and businesses, as well as to those who are interested in moving to Kent County and want to know more about our area.

Advertising opportunities in the map are available at very reasonable rates and the map has a shelf life of anywhere from one year to 18 months, with print runs in the thousands.  Ad sizes, rates and order forms will be sent to all of our members in the near future.  If you would like to advertise in this widely distributed publication, please give me a call or send me an email at the Chamber office.

Our October Business-After-Hours was graciously hosted by Innkeeper Jennifer Donisi and Owner Bernd Duerrmeier of Great Oak Manor.  We could not have asked for a more beautiful evening on the grounds of the manor.  What a spectacular venue for anyone's events, so give them a call if you are in search of a place for that special occasion.  We had a nice turn-out, wonderful food & drink and, as always, it was a great networking opportunity.   A big thanks to Bernd and Jennifer and Jennifer's staff, (who interestingly, seemed to bear an uncanny resemblance to her children), for a very enjoyable evening!

I  want to remind everyone of our upcoming Business-After-Hours on Thursday, November 15, which will be hosted by Patsy Whiteley of Champion Realty at 1002 Washington Avenue in Chestertown.  In keeping with the Thanksgiving spirit, Patsy has again asked that everyone attending bring two canned goods for donation to our local food pantry.

If you have not attended one of of our Business-After-Hours lately or ever!, try and take some time to join us.  You will not be sorry.  These events are one of the great benefits of Chamber membership.  You have an opportunity to meet face-to-face with potential customers and let them know firsthand about your product/service(s).  And, because they've met you in person, they are more likely to do business with you.  Remember to bring your business cards!

One final note: If you have not already done so, be sure to get out and vote today!

Mid-Shore Pro Bono Honors Volunteers

Mid-Shore Pro Bono recently celebrated National Pro Bono Week with a reception honoring its attorney volunteers. Sponsored and hosted by Rise Up Coffee Roasters, Mid-Shore Pro Bono staff, friends, family and volunteers all came out to thank the attorneys. More than 80 lawyers donated over 2500 hours of their time in the past year to the low-income clients served by the organization in Kent, Queen Anne's, Caroline, Talbot and Dorchester counties.

"Without our volunteer attorneys, there would be no program," said Sandy Brown, Executive Director of Mid-Shore Pro Bono. The lawyers were presented with certificates of appreciation, complimentary coffee mugs and bags of Rise Up Coffee.

Also attending the event was the Honorable Karen M. Jensen, Circuit Court Judge in Caroline County, who helped found the organization in 2005. "I can't say how much it means to me to see where Mid-Shore Pro Bono is today," she said, emphasizing the impact the organization has on everyone in the community. She expressed her own appreciation for the attorneys who "believe in giving back to the community." Jensen noted that the value of their donated time last year amounted to more than $600,000.

A representative from Congressman Andy Harris' office presented a commendation to Brown for the organization's service to the community. Emma Rose Myers offered classical guitar accompaniment to the evening's wine, coffee and desserts.

For more information or to make a donation, call Mid-Shore Pro Bono at 410-690-8128 or visit www.midshoreprobono.org.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (EASTON- October 31, 2012)

Dr. Vaidyanathan wins 2012 Cecil Award

Lakshmi Vaidyanathan, MD, is the winner of the 2012 Arthur B. Cecil, Jr., MD Award for Excellence in Healthcare Improvement. Dr. Vaidyanathan was chosen from among five nominees for her work in developing a palliative care program for Shore Health System. Palliative care is a coordinated approach of physical, emotional and spiritual care with the goal to relieve suffering for patients with advanced illnesses.

The Cecil Award for Excellence in Healthcare Improvement is named for Arthur B. Cecil, Jr., MD, a surgeon who practiced at Memorial Hospital from 1950 until 1988. The award was established to recognize Dr. Cecil's commitment to using grand rounds to share the latest developments in the field of medicine.

"Physicians are lifelong learners and they want to share what they learn with their colleagues," says Michael Tooke, MD, chief medical officer for Shore Health. "Today, the Cecil Award recognizes physician leaders for their contributions to educating and engaging physicians and other members of the healthcare team in quality improvement initiatives that continuously enhance the care available to our patients."

Dr. Cecil's son, Arthur Cecil, III, presented the award to Dr. Vaidyanathan on October 18 at a special ceremony at the Tidewater Inn in Easton. Mr. Cecil, who serves on the Shore Health Patient Quality and Safety Committee, says, "Tonight we pay tribute to everyone who provides patient care at Shore Health. This award is one of many ways that Shore Health recognizes the teams of people who are committed to caring for patients."

Rosa Mateo, MD, and Paul Monte, MD, were finalists for the Cecil Award along with Dr. Vaidyanathan. Dr. Mateo, an infectious disease specialist, was cited for her role in eliminating healthcare associated infections through the Target Zero initiative. Dr. Monte, a specialist in hospital medicine, was cited for leading the venous thromboembolism risk assessment and prophylaxis initiative.

The other 2012 Cecil Award nominees were cardiologist Scott Friedman, MD, and pediatrician Elizabeth Wroth, MD.

An internal medicine specialist, Dr. Vaidyanathan serves as the medical director for Shore Home Care and Hospice. Certified by the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine, she is a resource for patients and their families when they face the physical, emotional and spiritual effects of life-limiting and chronic illnesses.

Brian Childs, PhD, director of clinical ethics and spiritual care for Shore Health, nominated Dr. Vaidyanathan for the Cecil Award. He comments, "I applaud Lakshmi for her tireless and dedicated leadership in the creation and implementation of a comprehensive palliative care program. This program has had an impact on patients in need of a reduction in the distress that accompanies diagnoses such as end-stage dementia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and coronary disease."

Dr. Vaidyanathan comments, "I chose palliative care as a specialty because I want to do more than diagnose and treat medical conditions. I want to help patients understand their condition so that they can set goals and make good choices."

Dr. Vaidyanathan adds, "Palliative care is more of the right kind of care; it is not less medical care. The program we have at Shore Health brings together physicians, nurses, social workers and chaplains, who communicate among themselves and with patients and their family members to coordinate care."

OCTOBER 25, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ROCKVILLE, MD -- After a tumultuous General Assembly regular session followed by two special legislative sessions, the Maryland Public Policy Institute has released its fourth annual edition of "The Annapolis Report," a review of the state's 2012 legislative activity. Authored by Senior Fellow Gabriel J. Michael, the report examines legislation in key areas, such as taxes, healthcare, education, public pensions, and gambling.
The Annapolis Report
Discussing the report, Michael explained that he took a different approach in putting together this year's edition. "Because of the surprising failure of the legislature to pass a complete budget package during the regular session, followed by two additional special sessions, I had to find a new way of compiling the report. This year the report focuses less on scoring, and more on the interplay between the various sessions. We wanted to ensure the report was released in a timely manner, so the primary goal was to produce the analyses, which have the potential to help people better understand these issues in view of the upcoming election and referenda."

Unlike legislative report cards, "The Annapolis Report" is not dominated by a single issue, nor does it evaluate the performance of individual legislators. Rather, it considers the actions of Maryland's General Assembly as a whole. The report is composed primarily of brief yet cogent analyses of selected legislation. Its purpose is to serve as a concise issue guide for Maryland's citizens, taxpayers, and residents, by explaining state policy in plain language.

The full report can be viewed online at: The Annapolis Report

The Maryland Public Policy Institute is a 501 (C) (3) nonpartisan public policy research and education organization that focuses on Maryland public policy issues.
