Local Health Departments (LHDs) Respond to Cyclosporiasis
NACCHO collected qualitative data from LHDs who were involved in investigating and responding to the multistate Cyclosporiasis outbreak over the summer. These LHDs' experiences, successes, and challenges are documented in a new summary.

Kansas: First Statewide Report on Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs)

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment recently released the first statewide report on HAIs in Kansas hospitals. A companion document is also available to empower and engage patients and identify practical steps they can take to reduce their risk of acquiring central line-associated bloodstream infections and catheter-associated urinary tract infections when hospitalized. New Dialysis Infection Prevention Resources
CDC created and released new resources for preventing infections in dialysis patients. Visit CDC's Dialysis Safety website to access a provider training video, provider poster, patient pocket guide, and additional information.

Adolescent and Adult Quiz
The Adolescent and Adult Immunization Quiz has been updated to make it easier for the public to determine which vaccines they might need. Patients are now able to print their list of recommended vaccines and take it to their healthcare provider.

Antibiotic Resistance Threats Report
A new CDC report, "Antibiotic Resistance Threats in the United States, 2013," presents a snapshot of the burden and threats posed by antibiotic-resistant germs that impact human health. According to the report, at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics each year and at least 23,000 people die each year as a direct result of these infections. Live Tracking Influenza Vaccination Map from HHS

This mapping tool is a resource for researchers, providers, LHDs, and healthcare workers to track influenza vaccination claims rates of Medicare beneficiaries in real-time. It includes information for every county and zip code in the United States.  


March of Dimes, Sanofi Pasteur Launch Grandparents' Corner

The March of Dimes and Sanofi Pasteur unveiled Grandparents' Corner, a new online resource from the Sounds of Pertussis Campaign to help grandparents learn more about pertussis and the importance of adult tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccination. 

ABCs of the ACA - What You Need to Know

The Alliance for Health Reform published an online resource that answers key questions about the insurance marketplaces that opened for enrollment October 1, 2013. The document also provides links to websites that go into detailed explanations of how the law and the exchanges work. Some links point directly to state marketplaces and other government resources. Click here to access this resource.  


NEW: Billing For Clinical Services Toolkit and Website

NACCHO, with funding from the CDC, created a toolkit with resources, templates, and tools for LHDs to use while developing the capacity to bill third party payers for immunization, STD, TB and HIV services. More than 200 resources have currently been collected from state billing guides, CMS, state health departments, LHDs, insurance companies, and vendors of products such as electronic medical records and billing clearinghouses.  The toolkit can be found on NACCHO's new billing website along with other resources such as webinars, training opportunities, and information on peer networking.

NACCHO Immunization Videos Page
NACCHO has gathered videos addressing vaccination into one convenient place. Watch short videos covering immunization issues, including influenza, pertussis, adolescent immunization, and personal stories about vaccine preventable diseases. International Infection Prevention Week, October 20-26, 2013
International Infection Prevention Week (IIPW) takes place the third week of October each year and raises awareness about the role of infection prevention in patient safety. Request for Applications: Mentors and Mentees for the Voluntary National Retail Food Regulatory Program Standards Mentorship Program (Third Cohort)
As part of an ongoing effort to increase the use of the National Retail Food Regulatory Program Standards, NACCHO and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are pleased to kick off the third year of a mentorship program with LHDs. The anticipated awards will range from $8,000-10,000 per selected mentee LHD and $8,000-18,000 per selected mentor LHD. Visit NACCHO's Food Safety Program webpage for additional information. NACCHO is accepting Model Practice applications October 1-31, 2013. NACCHO's Model Practice Program honors and recognizes outstanding local public health practice. The New Jersey Immunization Network will be hosting a series of webinars in October to address timely and current immunization issues. The first webinar is titled, "Vaccines and Adult: Our Collective Challenge" is scheduled for October 22, 2013 at noon - 1 PM EST. The second webinar is titled, "Shot @ Life: Global Immunization" is scheduled for October 31, 2013 at 7:30 - 8:40 AM EST.

New Interactive Portal for Patient Confidentiality Laws 

On October 1, 2013, the Public Health Management Corporation released data that provides information on state-by-state laws and regulations on the use, release, and reporting of personal health information for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and tuberculosis. The Public Health Departments and State Patient Confidentiality Laws Map provides critical information that state and LHDs need to begin to evaluate what state laws facilitate or create barriers for coordination of prevention efforts and care.  

Get Smart About Antibiotics Week, November 18-24, 2013

Get Smart About Antibiotics Week has been an annual effort to coordinate the work of CDC's Get Smart: Know When Antibiotics Work campaign, state-based appropriate antibiotic use campaigns, non-profit partners, and for-profit partners during a one-week observance of antibiotic resistance and the importance of appropriate antibiotic use.

Webinar Series: Caring for Adolescents and Young Adults

The Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine's inaugural webinar series on adolescent healthcare started in October 2013 with a a compelling program about increasing immunization rates.The webinar series is aimed at clinicians and other healthcare professionals who work with adolescents and young adults.
