I was amazed this past week at what a bit or warmth and sunshine can do. Most all of my shrubberies have become covered with buds and taken on a spring hue. I still have to contend with the horrible grub damage my yard experienced at the hands... or should I say beaks of the resident crows in my neighborhood feasting on the grubs. I took a walk around the house after a bit of raking and a few wheel barrows of fresh mulch I should be ready to begin another earnest season of lawn work. Like the buds, I have noticed that slowly the sun and warmth are bringing the spring travelers back to life. They have made the trek up the peninsula to see the brown earth laden with floral blooms begin their annual fanciful show. Also like these floral blooms, we begin to see many of our seasonal businesses begin to open as they ready for the 2016 season.

Next week, May 1-7, 2016 is National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) across America. This is a time for us to reflect, celebrate and recognize the quality of life that tourism in Door County affords all of us as residents. As the Door County Visitor Bureau enters its 132nd season as the marketing group for Door County, we were formed March 13, 1884 and then incorporated April 8, 1891, we look both backwards and tip our hats to the long line of entrepreneurs and business owners that over the years have made Door County what it is and forward as we determine what mix of an integrated marketing plan will reach the traveler today and keep Door County in their travel plans. Long gone is the conversation over the back fence on asking a neighbor if they have ever been to a destination or discussing your upcoming plans. We live in a digital world with people half way around the globe weighing in on travel discussions.

This Friday the Governor will announce 2015 tourism economic impact numbers for Wisconsin and by county. The numbers for Door County are very promising and follow the same upward trend as our room tax collections showed last year. We will again be publishing a newspaper supplement highlighting the "Power of Tourism" in Door County. All of the latest tourism numbers will be included in the supplement, so watch for a copy to appear in your mailbox next week.

Please join us next Tuesday, May 3 at Maxwelton Braes for our NTTW breakfast and celebration. We will feature our new tourism video for the county, announce the CTA of the Year, and also announce our four recipients of the Carole Counard Scholarships. These are $1,000 scholarships awarded to four of the forty-nine applications received. Any individual is eligible for this scholarship program as long as they are a full time resident of Door County. Please go here to register for the breakfast.

Media
Media assistance has been provided to 18 journalists/media outlets thus far in April by providing images, information, on-air/on-camera interviews and/or support for Door County based articles and stories. A few highlights included Redbook, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, FOX 11 WLUK, NBC 26 WGBA and Marinalife Magazine. Additionally, a national press release about our Season of Blossoms promotion was distributed as was a regional press release announcing our new Capture Door County book.

New Capture Door County Photo Book Now Available
Our newest hardbound photo book titled Seasons Behind The Door has been released! The book is now for sale at our Door County Welcome Center office or online at CaptureDoorCounty.com. The book has over 230 new photographs and highlights the beautiful and ever changing seasons of Door County.

Just like with the last book, interested retailers have the opportunity to sell the book at their own stores, with wholesale order information available via this PDF wholesale order form. I believe the book will be a popular souvenir among Door County residents as well as visitors. Our first Capture book sold more than 2,500 copies, so now's your chance to get in on the action and sell the second volume at your retail business. All wholesale orders will be handled directly with our partner on the project, Pediment Publishing. Questions about wholesale orders should be directed to Ashley Ainley at ashley@pediment.com or 360-687-6873.

What do you think of our printed Guides?
Believe it or not, even though we are still on the cusp of the main tourist season of 2016 the staff is beginning to plan the 2016-17 Official Winter Guide and the 2017 Official Visitor Guide. To make the Guides the best books they can be, we're asking for your feedback on what you think of them. What do you like? What do you think we should do differently? We value your input and hope you can take a few minutes to respond. Please email your ideas to me at cathy@doorcounty.com or give me a call at 920-818-1135. Thank you!
