DCVB Partner Newsletter

As we enter into the dog days of summer, and my lawn at this point can attest to the fact that we have entered them, it is hard to believe that in six weeks or so we will be making sure the color report is available for the would-be fall visitors.

I have been asked by a retail member of the DCVB to inquire with other retail members if they would be interested in beginning a database of the trend of retail sales in Door County. This would be accomplished by each participating retailer reporting whether they were up, down, or flat in each month compared to the previous year. The DCVB would then report as a whole whether Door County retail is up or down by a certain percentage, or perhaps flat. This information will allow retailers to benchmark their statistics against the county average. The following three items are the points we believe will be the most useful.

  • % change in revenue from the prior year.
  • % change in number of sales from the prior year.
  • % change in the average sale from the prior year (calculated from the first two).

There are two items we need to ascertain.

  1. Are there enough businesses willing to participate so that the monthly averages are representative of Door County retail?
  2. Is there a core of businesses that will work on a committee to put together how this system will work?

If you are interested in participating please let Phil Berndt know by emailing him at: phil@doorcounty.com - also please state if you would be willing to serve on the formation committee. This needs to be developed in a way that assures  total confidentiality regarding individual business information.

I believe the same type of system could work for restaurateurs, but I think we should establish a system before moving forward with additional business categories. I believe it goes without saying that if a retailer does not participate in giving data, they would not receive the monthly data report.

Best Regards,

Media

Media assistance was provided to 19 journalists/media outlets in July by providing images, information, on-air/on-camera interviews and/or support for Door County based articles and stories. A few highlights included Local 5 Live on WFRV, Discover Wisconsin and the Chicago Tribune.

Cherry Themed Press Trip

We welcomed 18 journalists on a cherry themed press trip from July 27-30. During the trip they all got to taste their weight in fresh cherries and cherry related products as well as experience many of our popular activities and attractions.  A big THANK YOU to all of the businesses that hosted journalists during our recently completed cherry themed press trip, and all of our press trips this year.  We couldn't do it without you!

So far this year we have welcomed 49 journalists to Door County through our media marketing program with Geiger & Associates Public Relations. We have 3 more group press trips scheduled including one later this month, one in September and again in October.  Since our media marketing program began in 2007, we've welcomed 639 journalists to the county who have in turn written more than 1,450 travel stories about our destination. The earned media value of those stories is currently just under $14 million and they've reached over 1.1 billion readers/listeners/viewers.

Did you receive a 1-sided Window Cling?

You are NOT alone!  However, it's just an illusion because it's an opaque cling.  Try using your fingernail to pick at the edge of the blank side and you will find a solid white protective sheet that will peel off to reveal the Industry Partner side of the cling that clings to the glass. For best results, lightly position the cling on the glass and then use the edge of a credit card to work the air out - starting in the middle and working the air out toward the edges.

A word of advice - for August

Be nice to yourself.  Be nice to others.  "August" is not unique to Door County as no matter where you go, people are either aloof or on edge this time of year and, if you are like me, you've been working really hard at work while making the most of our long summer days - and your list still gets longer - so STOP and take some time for yourself and your family.  You might have to pull me kicking and screaming to take in a performance, meet up with friends for dinner, sink my toes into the sand or get out into a State Park but nothing works better to clear your head and refresh your soul. In the words of my Father, Carl Berndt: "You can't sell Fun, if you don't have any!"  So, take an example from our visitors and Get Out There and, if the car in front of you is going awfully slow, back off and take in the view - we really do live in a spectacularly beautiful part of the country!  What works for you?  Let me know: phil@doorcounty.com
