In addition to training interpreters and preparing them for certification exams, Interpreter Education Online also helps interpreters fulfill continuing education (CE) requirements. For those that may not be familiar with the CE process, we will go over some of the basics in this issue.
What is Continuing Education?
Continuing Education is a set of requirements imposed by licensing bodies (states, organizations) that encourages certified interpreters to expand their knowledge, strengthen their skills, and stay up to date on new developments in the interpreting field.
How does it work?
When an interpreter is certified, they will be required to undergo continuing education in order to maintain their certification. The licensing body from which the interpreter obtained their certification determines how many Continuing Education Units (CEUs) the interpreter needs in order to fulfill this requirement.
How can an interpreter acquire CEUs?
The interpreter may earn CEUs by participating in workshops, attending conferences, and enrolling in courses.
What if there aren't any workshops, conferences, or classes near where an interpreter lives?
Taking online courses, such as the ones provided by IEO, is a budget-friendly and convenient option that allows interpreters to gain CEUs without having to travel.
How many CEUs must interpreters earn and how often must they do this?
It varies by the licensing body. To find out the predetermined number of CEUs they must complete within a given time period, interpreters should contact the state agency or the organization that certified them.
How does an interpreter know which events or courses provide CEUs?
Most states and organizations supply a list of approved CEU providers on their webpages. Interpreters may also obtain this information by calling the organization. For the states and organizations that have approved IEO courses for CEUs, please click here. For ASL CEUs, click here .
What happens once an interpreter completes an approved CE event or course?
Generally, the interpreter will be provided with a certificate of completion, form, or letter that will validate their attendance of an event or successful completion of a course. The interpreter then submits this to the licensing body.
