When we think of interpreters and translators, we often picture them working in courtrooms, doctors' offices, or at a desk.  However, as the list below illustrates, they can be found in front of the movie camera as well!

Star Wars - In this 1977 blockbuster, audiences were introduced to an array of characters, one of whom was a robot named C-3PO.  In the film, C-3PO is designed to serve human beings.  Its main function is to ensure that meetings of different cultures go smoothly by providing information on etiquette, customs, and translation.  Claiming to be fluent in "over six million forms of communication", C-3PO speaks to all interpreters and translators when it says "We seem to be made to suffer.  It's our lot in life."

The Interpreter - Starring Nicole Kidman, this 2005 film depicts the ordeal that a U.N. interpreter must go through after overhearing the details of a plot to assassinate an African leader.  As a result,  the interpreter finds herself being both a victim and a suspect.  This fast-paced thriller illustrates that the life of an interpreter can sometimes be a dangerous one.

The Goonies - This adventure-comedy from 1985 features a group of kids who go on a wild  journey that leads them to the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willie.  Of these kids, "Mouth" (played by Corey Feldman) is the only one who can speak Spanish, thus becoming  the designated interpreter and translator.  In one scene, Mouth purposely (and humorously) misinterprets instructions to Rosalita, the new housekeeper.  However, Mouth's linguistic abilities are redeemed when he is able to successfully sight translate an old map from Spanish into English, which then allows the group to find the treasure.

Life is Beautiful - Directed by and starring Roberto Benigni, "Life is Beautiful" tells the tale of a Jewish-Italian shop owner named Guido Orefice who employs his creative imagination to shield his young son from the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp.  When Guido volunteers to interpret the camp rules that are being announced by a German guard, Guido uses the opportunity to purposely misinterpret what the guard says in order to depict the internment as one big game and, thus, keep his son's spirits up.

If you'd like to comment on any of these films, or would like to add to to the list, please post your comments on our Facebook and LinkedIn pages.

                       LANGUAGE IN THE NEWS
Everyone thinks they can be a translator

With a French upbringing, English parents, and a German degree under her belt, 24-year-old Clare Howes had a good head start in the language department. In 2010 she formalized her skills with a two-year masters in translation studies in Paris, and is now working in a translation agency in Siegburg near the Rhineland city of Cologne.

Wash. state considers gender-neutral language bill

In Washington state, dairymen, freshmen and even penmanship could soon be things of the past.

Over the past six years, state officials have engaged in the onerous task of changing the language used in the state's copious laws, including thousands of words and phrases, many written more than a century ago when the idea of women working on police forces or on fishing boats wasn't a consideration.

Google Translate does not always recognize languages

We all know nothing is perfect. Google does an excellent job in many areas, especially with web page translation and speech recognition for its Android  operating system. Up until today, I had never had a problem with either of these things, and I use both on a fairly regular basis.
