Yiddish finds its homeland in Russia's Far East

Yiddish may be dying out in Europe, but it is still very much alive in Russia's Far East. In the Jewish Autonomous Region, a territory along the Russian-Chinese border created by Stalin as a Jewish homeland, all schoolchildren learn Yiddish as part of the curriculum, even though students of Chinese and Korean descent often outnumber Jewish ones.

Bilingual judge may face assessment to prove language skill

Future bilingual Ontario judges may have to prove their French-language competency through an objective assessment as the Ministry of the Attorney General acts on recommended improvements to access to justice in French.

McDonald's seeks place in Australian dictionary

The Australian arm of McDonald's has urged the national Macquarie Dictionary to include "Macca's" -- the brand's local nickname -- in its next edition.

The hamburger giant said Macca's was second only to "footy" among recognisable words in local slang, according to a branding survey it commissioned that found 55 percent of Australians referred to the golden arches in the abbreviated form.
