Message from Tim Lam

The month of June marks the beginning of an exciting summer both for TISOH and the hospitality capital of the world, Las Vegas.  Our summer semester is well underway and students are busy experiencing their externships, site visits and other interactive learning opportunities.  TISOH is fresh from celebrating our landmark 10th anniversary at a spectacular gala hosted at the Bellagio. The highlight video is available below, special thanks to Memory Lane Video for their fine work.

Vegas is now all about pool parties, and bracing for the Electric Daisy Carnival which will usher in hundreds of thousands of summer revelers.  It is one of the largest off-premise events in the world and just one of the many attractions our dynamic city has to offer.  There is no better time to get in on the action and become an event planner.  Check out the 5-week FASTtrack event planning classroom certificate course that begins on July 13.

As I look forward to this sunny season ahead, I am reminded by how amazing the city I live and work in truly is.  With new mega projects like Resorts World breaking ground, the future is only getting brighter.  I smile when I reflect back on all our alums who had attended TISOH from other states and decided to stay to make this city their home.  Many are thriving in the hospitality industry and I am proud to see them at all the different networking and association events.

For those of you that may think Las Vegas is just a destination to visit, think again!  Be warned that once you open your eyes to new possibilities, you may want to make Vegas more than simply your future vacation destination. After all, what happens here tends to stay here, as the saying goes!

Sincerely,

TISOH Executive Director

Excerpt from The Vegas Wedding Planner Blog by Green Orchid Events:

I remember my first phone conversation with Tim Lam, Executive Director of TISOH, The International School of Hospitality, like it was yesterday... Fast forward 9 years and Green Orchid Events would not be where we are today without TISOH. I am forever grateful because the school allowed me to make connections, build relationships, and gain the confidence I needed to actually run a business.Through TISOH, I also met Angelica while setting up for a wedding. Shortly after, I decided to see if she would be interested in planning weddings with me. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Congratulations to Green Orchid Events for launching a beautiful new website:

TISOH students go behind-the-scenes in Las Vegas

A hallmark of every TISOH classroom course is the opportunity to go on professionally guided behind-the-scenes tours of the many one-of-a-kind hotel properties on the Las Vegas Strip.  For this semester, students from the Art of Concierge class toured The Mirage and its many entertainment and dining options, from the LOVE Cirque du Soleil theater to the 1OAK night club. Meanwhile, students from the Conference Management and Event Planning class toured the majestic Bellagio ballrooms and event facilities. Not to be outdone, the Wedding Coordination and Design class visited the Venetian Weddings chapel facilities, led by instructor Rebecca Stebbins, manager of Venetian Weddings, where they plan over 1,000 weddings a year!

Above, our Hospitality Leadership and Supervision students are visiting the world's largest Five Diamond property with over 4,000 luxury rooms, ARIA Resort and Casino, led by instructor Clifford Anderson. Site-visits continue to be one of the main highlights of the TISOH learning experience.

Distinguished Alumni Award Series - Veronica Benitez 2005

As part of our yearlong anniversary celebration, we highlight one alum from each of our ten years.  In 2005, Veronica Benitez graduated from the very first event planning course and has since become a fixture in the events industry.  She has turned her dreams and passions into a career she loves and we salute her success.

Hotels of the New Millennium

Welcome to the inaugural column of "Ask Anthony" where no hospitality industry topic is off limits!  In the issues ahead, I look forward to exploring the latest trending issues in this exciting industry we work and live in.

This month's hot topic is on "Hotels of the New Millennium"

A current student asked: "What is happening to hotels these days, more and more of them seem to be geared towards the younger crowd?"

This is indeed true as major hotel chains including Hilton, Hyatt, Starwood, and Marriott are now launching new brands aimed squarely at the millennial demographic.

Now who are the millennials per se? Simply put, they are the next generation of hotel guests.  Factually, anyone between the age of 18 and 34.  Behaviorally, they are young adults weaned in a highly connected world where social media, apps, and selfies are primary forms of daily interaction and expression.  Most importantly, they already make up 32% of the leisure market today.

How do millennials differ from traditional guests?

Examples are plentiful. Studies have shown that millennials prefer interacting with apps more so than with human beings, where their day may be delayed due to having to stand in a line.  Apps are immediate and activate on demand.  Starwood has developed a mobile app where the millennial guest can simply unlock their hotel door while bypassing the Front Desk entirely.  Another example as illustrated in the Huffington Post is the millennial guest's preference for breakfast room service to be hung (in a bag) on the door handle at service time. The thinking is that the guest will not need to interact with the room service attendant wheeling in the traditional breakfast cart.

Bottom line is that millennials are in high demand. Here are some of the recent examples of big corporate hotel chains adjusting to this new demographic:

Canopy by Hilton- A lifestyle brand developed in urban neighborhoods. A "postively yours" service culture with one-stop approach service. Amenities include a open lobby with natural approach, mobile check-in application, welcome gifts upon arrival, and evening tastings at the lounge.

Moxy Hotels by Marriott- Aggressive launch in USA coming soon in San Francisco, Seattle, New Orleans, Chicago. Female centric hotel that a flair of chic and fashionable style.

Hyatt Centric by Hyatt- Modern design approach with eclectic touches from the community. Amenities include plush bedding. locally inspired bath wear, free wifi, knock n' grab handcrafted food and cocktail kits.

Even Hotels by IHG- From the folks who created the Holiday Inn; this brand is centrally focused on health minded individuals committed to fitness and nutrition. Each hotel has an athletic studio, training zone, and rooms come with eucalyptus fiber bedding.

Parting thoughts:  As the millennial generation represents the future of the hospitality industry, hotel professionals need to educate themselves today on how to best serve their needs.
