A Note from NHA Gosnell Executive Director William Tramposch
|
We would like to start this month's e-newsletter with a hearty thanks to Nat Philbrick.
Recently, our staff had the pleasure of welcoming Nat back to the Whaling Museum as part of a two-day Warner Brothers press event for the March 2014 release of Ron Howard's film adaptation of Nat's book, In the Heart of the Sea.
In true NHA fashion, our staff gathered in the museum lobby to welcome and cheer on director Ron Howard and actors Chris Hemsworth, Brendan Gleeson, Benjamin Walker and Tom Holland on the morning of their arrival, which set the tone for the two days of filming and press interviews.
It comes as no surprise, however, that some of the loudest applause was reserved for Nat, who does so much to inspire an understanding and appreciation of Nantucket and American history. He was so moved by the welcome, that he took out his camera and captured the scene from his perspective, which we are thrilled to share with you here.
Thanks, Nat and all of the film's cast! We eagerly await the release of this Nantucket story that spans the ages.

2014 NHA Diversity Festival
Sunday, November 16
11 A.M. -4 P.M.
Free
Whaling Museum, 13 Broad St.
Join the NHA as we bring together the island's cultural communities in a free day of celebration at the Whaling Museum, with specialized programming for non-native English speakers. Throughout this festive day, the NHA will offer museum tours led by community volunteers in Spanish, Portuguese, Bulgarian, Thai and English, along with arts and crafts activities in multiple languages.
Attendees will enjoy a day spent reflecting upon the island's rich heritage in new and entertaining ways, including a Nantucket photo portrait station, games and delicious refreshments for all.
As part of this year's festival, the NHA will unveil a new exhibit entitled New Arrivals, New Voices, which invites visitors to explore the history of diversity on Nantucket, from the days of the Wampanoags to the days of tourism. Hear stories from some of the island's most recent immigrants, collected as part of the oral history project New Voices: Nantucket's Diverse Immigrant Populations.
This exhibit is funded in part by Mass Humanities, which receives support from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and is an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and supports the NHA's efforts to document the stories and lives of new immigrant families on Nantucket.
The 2014 Diversity Festival is made possible with generous support from ReMain Nantucket, the Community Foundation for Nantucket, and the Nantucket Cultural Council, a local agency, supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
