A Note from NHA Executive Director
|
I would like to offer a hearty congratulations to our Board of Trustees, under the leadership of President Janet Sherlund, and, in particular, the Properties and Housing Committee under Ken Beaugrand's leadership. For the past three years this group has been reviewing the current conditions and future anticipated needs of our 22 properties which they divide into three categories: Core; Investment; and Land. As well, they have developed a hierarchy of properties starting with those, of course, that most eloquently tell the story of four centuries of change on Nantucket. It will come as no surprise that at the head of the list are: The Whaling Museum; The Oldest House; The Old Mill; Hadwen House; Greater Light; the Research Library and Quaker Meeting House; the Fire Hose Cart Building and the Old Gaol. As you know, we have been able to pay a good deal of restoration attention to most of these sites, but still there are many others, lower on our hierarchy, that demand our constant attention. Anyone who has maintained just one property will know how challenging that can be, especially on a New England island 30 miles off-shore.
The Properties and Housing Committee has also determined which properties of the 22 are non-essential to our mission. They are: 10 Straight Wharf; 2 Union Street, and 33 Orange Street.
These properties have no restrictions as to use by the NHA, and the committee has proposed (and the Board unanimously approved) that they should be moved over to the 'investment portfolio' of the NHA and thus put in a position for potential sale at an appropriate time. 2 Union Street and 33 Orange Street would carry heritage protections, while 10 Straight Wharf (a.k.a. The Little Gallery) likely would not have any given the current condition of this site.
Proceeds from the sale of these non-core properties would go directly into the endowment and the NHA would, in turn, use the interest from that increased endowment on the perpetual care of its core properties like those mentioned above. This is considered 'best practice' in museums, and the Board's decision has been applauded by national leaders like the American Association for State and Local History; Historic New England, Mystic Seaport, New Bedford Whaling Museum and others.
In the end, the NHA will be able to have a stronger endowment than before and thus our core properties will receive the care they constantly require. This is why I applaud the efforts of our Board and this key committee during these past three years. Their work will ensure the continued health of the NHA.

The NHA is pleased to announce For Love of the Island, a new exhibit celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Nantucket Conservation Foundation (NCF). This exhibit is located in the Overlook Gallery at the Whaling Museum.
Presented as a collaboration between the two organizations, this exhibit will showcase the remarkable success of the NCF in conserving close to half of Nantucket's acreage as open space. The exhibition features an island map showing the most recently updated view of protected spaces, as well as a John Austin painting of the cranberry harvest. In addition, there are historic photographs of open land, as well as work from contemporary local photographers Cary Hazlegrove, Rob Benchley, Dan Sutherland, and Terry Pommett that captures the current state of these expansive areas.
