Plastic Bag Ordinance Begins July 1, 2015

On December 8, 2014, the City of Lafayette adopted Ordinance 626, regulating "Single-Use Carryout Bags" and "Food Packaging Recycling." The regulations require that all bags provided by retail establishments or public eating establishments for the purpose of carrying away goods from the point of sale be recycled paper carryout bags or reusable bags, beginning on July 1, 2015. The regulations also require select businesses to charge for checkout bags (compostable bags, recycled paper bags, or reusable bags) that they provide. Customers can avoid the charge by bringing their own bag.

Over the next few days a representative of the chamber will be dropping by your business and leaving
* Critical information about the ordinance
* Window poster
* Cards to give to your custiomers
* And information provided by Republic Services on how you can reduce your garbage bill and begin to recycle more

Don't be caught off guard. Although Senate Bill 270 (Ban on Single Use Carry Out Bags) was approved by Governor Brown, it is currently on hold subject to the referendum that will appear on California's November 2016 Ballot. However, Lafayette's ordinance supersedes the state initiative and begins July 1, 2015. The outcome of the ballot measure next November will have no direct impact on Lafayette's current regulations.

For more information, visit the City of Lafayette's website.

Auto Burglaries are Preventable - Don't Feed the Bears

So far this year, we have had 58 auto burglaries reported within the city. The majority of these burglaries have occurred in the downtown core of the city, during business hours. This type of crime is completely PREVENTABLE - if there is nothing for the crooks to steal, they will move to another location to do their crimes. Prevention. You should never leave anything that looks like it has value within your car. A telephone charging cord may signal that there is a telephone in the car. A backpack may contain a laptop, a briefcase may contain business records and cash. If you don't leave anything of value inside the car, you significantly reduce the probability that this crime will occur to you. Business owners are also being asked to increase the number of patrols that their employees do of their parking lots, especially during the afternoon hours. Having an employee walk the parking lot on a routine basis may prevent crooks from plying their trade. PLEASE CALL THE POLICE IF YO SEE SUSPICIOUS INDIVIDUALS OR VEHICLES IN OR AROUND YOUR BUSINESS... Emergency 911, Dispatch 284-5010, Lafayette Police Dept. 283-3680.
