Today's EBMUD Pipeline Project/Lafayette Circle
Update

Today - Tuesday, May 26 - the crew will return from Memorial Day weekend and complete the hook-ups to Starbucks, Roam and the Fiesta Square offices. Water will be shut off to those businesses but it will be quick and in the morning. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday - there will be two connections completed right by the creek (next to Cooperage). There will also be some work at the fire hydrant where Hough and Lafayette Circle intersect. Next Friday and the following Monday, there will connections completed between Wildwood and Brook. Folks, the good news is this should complete the work. Although we were given end of June as the duration of the project, the crew is moving quickly. That was the good news, what about the bad news you ask...

Last Monday, you may have noticed thousands of gallons of water running down the curb and into the storm drains. Here is what happened. The crew had to shut off water to do connections. There are valves/gates that can isolate a particular area. When the crew went to open the gate back up at the corner of Mt. Diablo Blvd. and Lafayette Circle (Misto Lino) it broke. It took quite a bit of time to find a way to shut the water off. The valve and water line were installed in 1936, the same as the line they have been working on. And although there have been no breaks on the line, it is inevitable that this line could fail at any time. So the prudent thing to do is replace the pipeline from Mt. Diablo down to Hough. EBMUD and the city engineering department are trying to work out details to add this new project. Their survey crew was out on Thursday preparing. This job should not take as long and certainly not as complicated.

There is another piece to this project that will begin when school ends replacing a pipe from Lafayette Circle out to Moraga Rd. Sometime after each part of the project is completed, a paving crew will come behind them and repave the street. Expect each section to take about 2 days.

Today - Tuesday, May 26 - Walking Tour of Lafayette's Downtown Creeks - 2:30-4:30pm

The City of Lafayette is recruiting consultants to prepare a Downtown Creeks Plan. As part of this solicitation we are sponsoring a tour of the Downtown creeks for this afternoon - May 26 - from 2:30-4:30pm. Recognizing that these creeks are private property the city is requesting assistance in notifying property owners of the tour so they understand why a group of people is walking through their area. If you would like to join the tour, please arrive at the city office before 2:30pm. The group will walk through various parts of the downtown heading East to the Gazebo at Mt. Diablo Blvd. and Golden Gate Way.

Sections of three major creeks run through downtown. The city has creek setback requirements. These creeks are a natural asset that can help define our downtown character and reinforce the city's semi-rural image. Private property owners should be most interested in what kinds of plans the city has for these creeks in the future.

Know Your Money - Counterfeit Money is Circulating in Lafayette

Counterfeit money is going around town again. Be on the lookout for someone purchasing small items with a large bill - especially $100's. The counterfeit detector pen only checks for the correct type of paper (if someone washes a small bill and overprints a larger denomination, the bill will pass the pen test.) It is important to Know Your Money especially since they keep changing it. Click here for an informative flyer - Know Your Money - from the Treasury Department.
