Sunshine Flower Mill

Our friends Marty and Darrold Glanville, who mill heritage grains in Minnesota, have come east to spend the holiday with their daughter and her family who live at Kimberton Hills.  Lucky for us, they brought a selection of their flours that are perfect for holiday baking! Here is the note from Marty-
Gluten-intolerance? You might be able to eat wheat again! Sunrise Flour Mill now is carrying Turkey Red Heritage Wheat. It predates hybridization which is thought to be the cause of much of the GI today. This is the wheat people ate before there was an epidemic of GI. It comes in 3 grinds - Whole Grain, Bolted (most of the bran removed, all else intact), Refined (all purpose flour that has not been bleached or bromated). The flavor and baking qualities are so superior that people without GI will love it too. We came upon it when Darrold discovered he is GI and we missed really good bread when we stopped eating modern wheat. There are other heritage wheats (spelt, emmer, einkorn to name a few) but they don't have the baking properties of the TR. We have sold many hundreds of pounds at markets during the summer to people who are GI and are able to eat it. We'll also have Oats, OatsNRye, pizza flour, specialty flours and cornmeal.

Hello Market Shoppers!

Thanksgiving is about food, family, and bounty- sounds like the farmers' market!  We hope that the good food our farmers grow and our artisans make will make your holiday special.  How lucky we all are to know our farmers!  And how lucky the farmers are to meet the people who love their food.  They come to the market each Saturday to sell their products, and more importantly, to become part of our community.  It is a treasure we can all be thankful for!

Our farmers love the market so much they they come year-round!  We will have holiday markets with farmers and artists every Saturday until Christmas.  The hours are 10am to noon.  As a preview for the markets, this week Ruth Sitko, of Sitko Farms in Pottstown, will join us with her handmade wreaths!

This Saturday we will have almost EVERYTHING for your holiday weekend! Candles, wine, chocolate, cheese, vegetables, fruit, apple cider, pies, gelato, cupcakes, nut brittle, the list goes on and on... And you can shop while listening to some superb music by the Dirk Quinn Band- it is a performance not to be missed!

And don't forget that there may be extra mouths to feed for the long weekend.  If you don't have time to stop at the ATM, bring your checkbook.  Most of our farmers don't yet take credit card - they are too busy in the field to focus on cell phones that double as credit card machines.  Maybe someday...

We wish all of you a HAPPY THANKSGIVING and hope to see you at the Market!

Recipe

Cranberry Apple Crisp
(for 9 X 13) pan
12 oz. Package of fresh cranberries (I use about 2/3 of a bag)
5 to 6 large Gold Rush apples, unpeeled (I said this was easy!), cored and sliced
1/2 c. sugar
2 t. cinnamon
½ c. flour, divided
4 T. packed brown sugar
1 ½ c. rolled oats (regular or quick)
~1 c. chopped walnuts
~6 T. melted margarine or butter
Preheat oven to 375
Combine cranberries, apples, sugar, cinnamon, and 2 T. of the flour. Put into a pan (greased if it's glass or not a 'coated' pan)
Mix remaining ingredients in the same bowl you used before, and then sprinkle them on top of the apple mixture
Bake at 375 for 40 min, or until browned

Serve warm, topped with ice cream, of course!!
