Ready for Pentecost Sunday, May 15
A Message From Our Pastor

As we come to the end of this half year of Christ, the same half year which began with our time of preparation last Advent, we are once again facing the end of the Easter season (i.e. Eastertide) with Pentecost this coming Sunday. Pentecost is celebrated ever year on the fiftieth day following Easter. As Easter is preceded by 40 days of Lent to remind us of the forty days Jesus spent in the desert following his baptism, Eastertide celebrates the 50 post-Easter days prior to the sending of the Holy Spirit. Many people celebrate Pentecost with the wearing of red and as the birthday of Christ's church. Yet this day reflects much more than the birth of the Church, Pentecost celebrates the birth of mission. The Day the Holy Spirit arrived as promised to guide, empower, and sustain us not just as disciples but as "do-ciples". As workers in mission empowering the in-breaking of the Kingdom of God, as Adam and Eve were once workers within God's Garden of Eden.

The theologian Jürgen Moltmann wrote: "Pentecost," as Christians call this event is thus not an appendix and also not an addition to "Good Friday" and "Easter." Pentecost is the goal of Jesus's death on the cross and his resurrection by God into the glory to come. Where the Holy Spirit is, God is present in a special way and we experience God in our lives that are thus quickened by a source out of the depths of our being. We experience life, healed and redeemed, complete and in its entirety, with all of our senses. We feel and taste, we touch and see our life in God and God in our life."

Pentecost calls for us not just to wear red and celebrate the birth of the church, but to celebrate God's presence with us in this otherwise broken world; where brokenness distracts and saps us of our mission focus and strength. Shepherd of the Hills, like the post-resurrection apostles before us have been worshiping and praising God this Eastertide, but soon like these same apostles, we may be called to do things in very different ways.

Have you been looking for how God has been present in the life of Shepherd of the Hills (SOTH)? Besides the several associate members who will be moving full-time to the lake within the next 90 days, we welcome several new associate members to include: Pastor Tom and Barbara Omholt from St. John's Lutheran in Washington DC, and Darlene Egtvedt. Besides the already mentioned two associate member families moving to the lake, it also looks like we will be accepting another family into the congregation within these same 90 days. I see these movements as confirmation that God has plans for SOTH, even if we do not know what they are or how SOTH will look like once God's plans are implemented.

Many things have happened as this community has lived through the last 50 days, yet as we approach Pentecost, our time for waiting and watching, like the apostles, will also come to an end with the arrival of the Holy Spirit. With the reminder how even in our most challenging of times we are never alone!  This festival reminds of God's gift to us of the Holy Spirit, or the "Comforter" (from Paraclete) and the "source of Life" (fons vitae). This is why we will be wearing RED for this Sunday -- to remember the gift "...who proceeds from the Father and Son...."

CHRIST IS RISEN!!! ALLELUIA!

What is Church?
David E.

It seems like there are two definitions...

1-"Where two or more are gathered in My name"

2- A large old frequently historic building located in a part of town few people want to travel to- (they moved to a nicer part of town fifty years ago) attended by a dwindling number of age 60 to 90-plus-year-olds whose strength and financial support go mainly to keep the roof from leaking. The 60 rank pipe organ died some years ago. A few stalwart volunteers can still host coffee and cookies after the single Sunday AM service (down from two to four services fifty years ago). The pastor will frequently preach to the congregation he/she would like to have rather than that which he/she has.

A rather prolific contemporary Episcopal/ELCA or ELCA/Episcopal writer and self-acknowledged expert in such matters says if you have such a structure - get rid of it so you can get on with your mission (undefined). However, he also seems to indicate if you do not have such a structure you will have difficulty getting anyone new involved and interested in your mission. He writes that your music is probably wrong or inappropriate. It is either too contemporary or too traditional. Change it. The Roman Catholics (RCs) tried the drums and guitars with great success in the 70s and that is apparently why most RC parishes don't do that style music today. Maybe we are different from the RC age 60 to 90 plus church goers. These parishes are "historical preservation committees". Church structures have been nationalized in France since about 1905. See definition 1.

Sounds cynical but that seems the way it is.

Rural Clergy Training Program  May 24-25

Rural and small-town Veterans, in particular, have limited choices for healthcare. BE PART OF THE SOLUTION!!! Members of the clergy, and their houses of worship, can serve as important contact points for Veterans in a community. As health/mental health providers, Veteran support organizers, or as Veterans you can make a difference in the lives of Veterans looking for community resources, or who don't realize the resources available in their community.

The Veteran's Administration (VA) National Chaplain Center, the VA Office of Rural Health, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Federal Bureau of Chaplains, the West Virginia/Western MD Synod of the ELCA, the Garrett College of Continuing Education, and many others join together to offer a Rural Clergy Training Program (RCTP) training event on May 24-25, 2016 at Garrett College in McHenry, MD. All faith backgrounds are invited.
29th Annual Synod Assembly     June 3-4
The 2016 West Virginia-Western Maryland Synod Assembly will be held on June 3-4, 2016, at the Bridgeport Conference Center, Bridgeport, West Virginia. The theme for the event is "Free and Renewed in Christ".

Our prayers and best wishes go out to our voting delegates, Beth and Scott Johnson
(pictured at left) along with Pastor Rick Egtvedt.

Community Lutheran Partners (CLP) is asking for donations of pots and pan sets and sheet sets (especially king size) for this year's assembly. They will gratefully accept all One+Plus Kit and STUFF kit donations but if you are wanting to narrow your collection focus, then the pots/pans and sheet sets are most needed. Another item that would be greatly appreciated are twin sized quilts.

Please bring your donations to the church classroom by Sunday, May 22 or Sunday, May 29  so that our delegates Beth and Scott can take them to the Synod Assembly.  Thank you!
