Art from Ashes
The Ascent :: the Art from Ashes newsletter :: September 2013
If you read this before 10 am Tuesday, tune in to  Colorado and Company on 9News and watch an interview with Catherine and Prinjastin Sykes, poet and youth representative on the board!

A 9-year-old girl from England accidentally messaged me via iChat, because her mum and I have similar email names. After I "met" her mother in order to get permission to continue the conversation, we developed a very sweet little relationship. I told her my grandson also is 9 and that I was born and raised in England not far from where she lives.

She has just asked me what it is that I do. Now, I was a marketing professional for 12 years, and I know all about elevator speeches and messaging and whatnot. But when I had to answer a 9-year-old who knew nothing about me other than I'm a "lovely lady" in Colorado, I had to come up with the simple essence of what Art from Ashes is all about.

"I work with young people who have been hurt by life and who are angry or sad about it. I help them write poetry about how powerful they are and that the world also can be beautiful, so they don't believe life is all about being hurt." Bam. New elevator speech.

The brevity of the information below will give you some sense of the good news at Art from Ashes, as well as the changes comin'. Please click the links to go to our website for further information.

Numbers Don't Lie
OR...We've got charts and graphs!
Here are some fun facts: A 2010 study* shows that the cost of incarcerating a juvenile for 1 year is $88,000, and that taxpayers save $2 million* for each child who is prevented from entering a life of crime.
AND
At the end of fiscal 2011, 6,496 young people were on probation, on parole, or residing in Department of Youth Corrections facilities.*

Good times.

One Phoenix Rising youth participant, asked if his outlook on life changed after participating in the workshop, responded, "My perspective has changed phenomenally. I never felt I was valuable, I never thought I was beautiful, that I was anything... I take care of myself now. So, since being in there [Phoenix Rising workshops], I've started into college, I've gotten out of being homeless, I've started taking care of all of my stuff that I need to do. So, it's changed my outlook on myself and the world a lot."

Featured Youth Poet :: Wolf Girl
OR..."Thank you for calling Art from Ashes, this is Wolf Girl"
"Without Art from Ashes, I would not be here today. I was at a cliffhanger in my life and wanted so badly to let go and fall. Then my best friend dragged me to an Art from Ashes poetry workshop. I fell in love with it by the end of the two hours and felt disappointed that there wasn't more. So, I continued to keep going weekly. The more I went, the more I found myself enthralled and entertained--craving more and more. A sign from my sweet goddesses invoked me to become a volunteer. Simply put, Art from Ashes is more than a beacon of hope. For young adults like myself, it is my lifeline. My very purpose for being on this Earth; why my goddesses guided me through this life to them."

Link here to read more about Wolf Girl and read one of the many amazing poems she's written.

Wolf Girl has been volunteering at Art from Ashes for months, handling paperwork and answering the phone (where else will your phone call be answered by someone named "Wolf Girl"?). We would love to help Wolf Girl continue to succeed, but lack the resources to fund this position. If you'd like to support this hardworking young lady by providing a monthly stipend or one-time donation, please donate here

AfA's 4th Annual Running of the Gays
OR..."Don't spray my face! Watch the makeup!
The weather was perfect on August 11th for a 3-block marathon in heels -- just enough sunlight to make the green sequins glisten on Alex's heels (winner of the Fancy Hoofer award!), but not so much heat that our runners had to risk it all at the mid-course misting station ("Don't spray my face! Watch the makeup!" they yelled, trotting toward Washington Avenue).

A story by Jessica Fitzgerald, Program Manager
OR..."Today I am purple, tomorrow I might be blue..."
At The Spot, we have the opportunity to interact with many of the youth who use the drop-in center, even when they don't stick around for the workshop. When I asked one of the youth, Danny, if she wanted to join us, her first question was, of course, "What do you do?" After I told her about our poetry and spoken word process, her next question was "How old are you?" When I told her I'm 22, she insisted she could not be "taught" by someone younger than her (23). We continued a friendly relationship over the weeks, and then she said she was leaving Denver for a while but would come to the workshop once she moved back. Three weeks ago she participated in her first workshop. At the end of the workshop, she insisted that I be the one to type her poems (facilitators type every youth poem from every workshop to honor their words). While typing, I saw she had written me a note, thanking me for encouraging her. It brought tears to my eyes, because this is why I do what I do, and why I'm wiling to invest so much of myself.

We're in our ninth year of partnership with Urban Peak to provide weekly workshops for thousands of homeless and other struggling youth at The Spot. We really need community support to keep these workshops going. Please donate here!

Meet Chandrika Prem, FunDevelopment Director
OR...An obligatory shameless request for funding!
As the new FunDevelopment director at Art from Ashes, my first job is to implement systems that will help us stay in touch with all of our supporters in some fun and exciting ways... but maybe you don't want to hear about systems. Or if you do, you can read my first draft here (before the editors got ahold of it...). Because it's all about our new database. And if you're a supporter who understands the importance of efficient systems, we would love you to help us fund it and free up staff time to work with more youth.

It's an honor to work with an agency that has so much passion to serve the community. And as a musician, I totally believe in the power of the arts to make a difference in people's lives. If you do, too, please give us money! That's right. I said it. After all, that's why I'm here...
Volunteer at AfA and get $$ in the Karma Bank!
OR...A shameless request for your time!
With only one full-time and two part-time staff, AfA relies on our volunteers to support the youth. These amazing people, who understand the value of "giving" in a "having" world, offer a minimum of 6 hours a month of their time and a maximum of their skills.

As of August, we have 56 volunteers who have donated a whopping total of 1,466 hours this year!

If you'd like to join the crew, please go here to apply and download more info about us, and we'll send you an ArtCurious Adventure Tour, so you can decide if this is where you want to be. And we'd love it if you decide this is where you want to be!

Board update by Adam Speirs, Board President
OR...Now a message from the really important people!
If you're interested in our strategic purpose, the news of how the board functions and ideas we're developing, or if you're interested in joining our board of directors, please click below for more information...

* Our newest member of the Dylan Thomas Society is Jeff Miller! This year's goal is for 30 new members at $1,000. Read more here...

* Each of our board members is now "attached" to a volunteer team (learn about volunteer teams here), providing a direct line of communication and support between the agency and the board.

* We are raising funds to purchase a Donor Management System that not only will allow us to communicate more efficiently with supporters, but also will save numerous hours of staff time currently spent tracking youth attendance, adult participation, and guest artist involvement via multiple spreadsheets. It's not a sexy ask, but we'd love some help with that. If you'd like to give, please donate here and mention the database.

* Long-time board member Marie Verrett has retired from the board after 10 years, which included a 3-year stint as Director of Operations. She continues to serve in an advisory capacity (what...you think we'd let her go completely?). We all wish her the best in her future endeavors and thank her for the time, energy, and enthusiasm she has given Art from Ashes over the years.

Three New Adult Workshops!
OR...Poetry. It's not just for struggling youth any more.
Art from Ashes workshops transform the lives of everyone, no matter the age. Because we serve youth, doesn't mean our programs only work for youth. More than 300 adult participants have benefited from our small group six-week workshops, and in 2014 AfA will launch our new large group afternoon workshops, for those unable to schedule a weekly commitment. Not only can adults access and demonstrate their inherent creativity, but the money invested supports our youth programs. Win/Win!
  • Intro Workshop: starts Oct 9, Wednesdays from 6 to 7.30 pm
    • Intermediate Synesthesia: starts Oct. 12, Saturdays from 11 am to 12.30
  • Intermediate Four Agreements: starts Nov. 5, Tuesdays from 6 to 7.30 pm
