Community Spotlight

Since 1995, The Rude Mechanicals, aka Rude Mechs, theatre collective has created a genre-defying slate of original works that they produce at home and tour nationally and abroad, representing Austin as a home for cutting-edge theatre. Their latest critically-acclaimed show, Stop Hitting Yourself, had its world premiere in January 2015 at New York's Lincoln Center and is now on tour.

Since 1999, they have run The Off Center, a 10,000 square foot warehouse performance venue that includes a 93-seat black box theater, rehearsal space, artist studios, a lending-library of scenic materials, and a classroom for their summer program for teens, Off Center Teens.

Every summer since 2000, Rude Mechs has shared their writing and performance techniques with teenage girls in a program called Grrl Action. This year the program will be called Off Center Teens, and will accept teens of all genders. Off Center Teens is a theatre summer camp program in which 13 to 16 year-olds write, create, publish, and perform original works for the stage drawn from their own life experiences. To give the teens more strength, confidence and self-care, participants will also receive violence prevention education from Sun Dragon Martial Arts and Self Defense. On June 27 & 28 at 2:00 p.m., the Off Center Teens participants will take the stage and transform their autobiographical writing into powerful and personal public performances at The Off Center. Information and registration for the program can be found here.

The Austin Creative Alliance presents the Creative Sector Summit 2.0, an opportunity to move from assessing the challenges facing culture, arts and creativity in Austin toward proposing solutions. At this summit you will discuss emerging ideas in three areas and form working groups to shape these ideas into concrete plans.

1. community engagement

- alerting the community at large to the challenges our city's rapid growth poses for the creative sector

- actionable solutions to said challenges that can successfully draw support from local business, city government and the greater Austin community

2. real estate

- preserving and expanding the creative infrastructure (venues of all types, flex spaces, rehearsal spaces, studios, galleries, etc) in central Austin

- increasing work space and housing options for artists and creatives

3. government relations

- enhancing communication and partnership with city offices that serve the creative sector

- maximizing the utility of city commissions on creative and cultural matters

- convincing elected officials to support our upcoming proposals

There will be a short presentation about the Austin Creative Alliance's increased focus on economic development, followed by brief discussions of ideas and initiatives emerging in Austin and other cities around the three topics above, then breakout sessions on each topic to form working groups. This summit is strictly focused on finding solutions. We will have other forums in the coming months to further discuss the evolving challenges we all face.

Texas Music Office website survey

The Texas Music Office is currently working with a group of MBA students from St. Edwards University on a "Capstone" research project, analyzing the TMO's website in order to make it more valuable and useful to you. The student's research and work is a free service to the TMO, guided by their professor as a part of their curriculum. They need your help in assessing what parts of the TMO website are working well, and what parts need improvement.

Please take a few minutes to fill out the survey. Your opinion is extremely valuable and appreciated!

Take the Art in Sacred Spaces Survey

The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation has provided support for Partners for Sacred Places to perform a three-city study on the space uses and needs of performing artists and organizations. Austin has been selected as one of the three cities, and we are working in collaboration with the Austin Creative Alliance. This survey is the first phase of developing new models for providing effective spaces for artists and organizations through the use of historic sacred places.

Your role in this survey process is very important. The data collected will create an accurate snapshot of the city of Austin in terms of the current state of usable artist spaces as well as what you, as the artists and arts organizations of Austin, need in terms of space.
