NEA Funding Restored

Americans for the Arts, 7/15/14

During the U.S. House Appropriations Committee's consideration of FY 2015 funding for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Ranking Member Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY) and Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-ME) secured an $8 million funding restoration to the NEA within a non-controversial manager's amendment offered by Interior Subcommittee Chairman Ken Calvert (R-CA). Just days earlier, the House subcommittee had passed legislation cutting NEA's budget to $138 million, down from current funding of $146 million. However, with strong support and calls from advocates across the country, the full committee passed the amendment on a voice vote to restore the funding. The new bill then passed out of committee by a vote of 29-19, advancing it for future consideration on the House floor as FY 2015 budget work continues. http://tinyurl.com/pzev5rz

Town Paints Sculpture Blue, to Artist's Horror

Hyperallergic, 7/29/14

"French municipalities are mistreating the public works they commission under a national "1% for art" program, with one going so far as to recently repaint a sculpture without the artist's approval, Libration reported. In the north-eastern commune of Hayange, a stonework sculpture by the artist Alain Mila was repainted blue, the gentle monumentality of its twin forms transformed into a grim robin's-egg scene, its color suspiciously close to the logo of the National Front, a far-right party." http://tinyurl.com/q3sr5kt

Military bands offer musicians great jobs, similar challenges to orchestras

The Washington Post, 7/19/14

"In musical circles, there's a lot of disgruntlement that the government doesn't do more to subsidize the arts. In one area, though, the government does plenty. The military is one of the largest employers of musicians in the Washington area; indeed, the Army's Web site claims that the institution is 'the oldest and largest employer of musicians in the world.' The combined budget for the nation's military bands was projected, in 2013, at $388 million (before sequester-related cutbacks)... Yet all of this funding doesn't protect military bands from some of the challenges that face private-sector ensembles: shrinking budgets, aging audiences and larger questions of purpose." http://tinyurl.com/lydglw2
