AIPP Named YMCA Austin's Community Partner of the Year for 2014!

The YMCA of Austin presented the award at their annual meeting on May 14. For the past two years, Art in Public Places has worked closely with YMCA of Austin on the North Austin Community Garden, Austin's first artist-led community garden. The garden is located at the City of Austin/YMCA North Austin Community Recreation Center and celebrated its grand opening on May 17.

Community members, project partners, and the artists came out to celebrate the Grand Opening of the garden!

Art in Public Places commissioned local artists Lucy Begg and Robert Gay of Thoughtbarn to design and implement the garden. During the course of the project, the artists worked extensively with the local community, through workshops and public events, to develop the design of the garden. They also established the Garden Leadership Group, now led by community volunteers, to develop a governing structure and bylaws, including membership rules and fees. Austin-based creative agency Flow Nonfiction was commissioned to create a short documentary film about the project. Watch the film now!

TEMPO Artwork in the News

Two TEMPO 2013/14 artworks received Austin Critics' Table nominations in the category of "Work of Art: Independent or Public Project": Albedo by Mason Leland Moore and Joel Nolan and i see you/you see me by Autumn Ewalt. Albedo brought art into an unexpected site, using multiple layers of industrial plastic wrap to encase the Pleasant Valley Street bridge underpass and creating a visually dynamic place for ambient light to play off of the textured surface. Ewalt's work, located in a heavily wooded area of Gaines Creek Park, used 1000 LED lights to recreate the mating rituals of fireflies. The winners of the Austin Critics' Table awards will be announced June 2.

Treevolution by Amy Scofield, photo by Philip Rogers

Though the TEMPO artworks were designed to be displayed for a short time, one piece will live on in another Texas city. Amy Scofield's Treevolution, three 20 foot tall tree sculptures made from bright blue recycled PVC tubes and plastic orange trash fence, has been accepted by Dallas' Art on Henderson 2014 exhibition. The artwork will be on view South Austin Park through May 26 and will then move to Dallas in June.

U.S. Courthouse in Austin among 20 Federal Buildings Honored as "Best of GSA"

BDCNetwork.com, 5/5/14

"On April 30, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) and its private-sector partners honored 20 federal buildings that represent the agency's best recent efforts in design and architecture.

Measuring 252,000 square feet, the new United States Courthouse in downtown Austin contains one special proceedings courtroom, four district courtrooms, four magistrate courtrooms, chambers, jury assembly, and ancillary spaces for users that range from the U.S. Marshals Service to GSA. In its reinvention of San Antonio Street as a plaza, the project extends into the public realm. Today monumental stairs cascade from the courthouse's east elevation and into the plaza. Interwoven with pavers and native plants, this new extension of Republic Square Park hosts cultural and civic events. Meanwhile, in the courthouse lobby, The Austin Wall reminds visitors of the natural setting in which vibrant city life takes place. The creation by Clifford Ross depicts the Texas Hill Country in 9,000 pounds of stained glass and stainless steel. Opening the artwork's lower portion joins the lobby and jury assembly room to form a gracious public events space."

Local Filmmakers at Cannes Film Festival

Several films made by young Austin filmmakers were a part of the Cannes Film Festival this month in Cannes, France. "Skunk" by Annie Silverstein and Monique Walton has become the first-ever student film from the University of Texas Radio-Television-Film Department to be selected from more than 1,600 entries this year for the prestigious Cinefondation competition at the Festival. Two other student features from the university will be screening in the Short Film Corner, which is part of the Cannes Market and not part of the official selection. They are "The Visit," co-directed by graduate students Jing Yang and Mariam Aziz; and "Inherit the Truth," by senior Christopher Casanova and junior Mike Quinn. "The Perfect Stranger," a short by members of the African American Youth Harvest Foundation of Austin, will also screen in the Short Film Corner. Read more about SKUNK here
