Binary Branch by Jamie Panzer

This sculpture, fabricated from wood, mimics the form of a tree, but its "branches" abide by a binary growth pattern. By combining nature and technology, this sculpture offers the viewer an opportunity to reflect on the phenomena that greatly determine our surroundings, as well as our immediate and long-term future. The artwork is located in Boggy Creek Greenbelt (1114 Nile St.) and will be in place until July 31, 2014.

Glo-Wave by Melissa Borrell

Three contemporary sculptures made of flexible plastic sheeting combine organic shapes with architectural elements. Their lightweight, undulating forms reference the water that flows in nearby Blunn Creek. Solar Powered LED lights glow at night to illuminate the sculpture. The installation is located in Little Stacy Park (1500 Alameda Drive) and will be in place until June 2, 2014.

Frozen Flow by Juan Deleon

The plywood sculpture depicts a moment of waves and ripples on the water's surface and urges visitors to reflect on their relationship with the environment and ask, "What if I could stand on water?" The sculpture, sited near Big Stacy Pool, invites interaction - people are encouraged to sit, lie, or recline on the wavy surface. The artwork is located in Big Stacy Park (700 E. Live Oak St.) and will be in place through June 2013.

The Directors - Women Lead 13 of the Cultural Institutions in the Washington/Baltimore Area

The Washington Post, 2/28/14

"For decades, women have held many positions in the museum field, working as curators, development specialists and press secretaries. But in recent years, women have assumed the director title in droves. As of 2012, 57 percent of museum directors in the United States are women, according to the American Alliance of Museums. In Washington, about 50 percent of museums and historical sites are now led by women, with many helming active, popular museums with regional and national appeal, such as the National Portrait Gallery, the Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Phillips Collection. In the past six years, five of the region's most prominent museums have gained a female director."

Study Finds a Gender Gap at the Top Museums

New York Times, 3/7/14

"Women run just a quarter of the biggest art museums in the United States and Canada, and they earn about a third less than their male counterparts, according to a report released ... by the Association of Art Museum Directors, a professional organization. The report noted strides made by women at small and midsize museums, with budgets under $15 million, often university or contemporary-art institutions. Here, women have basically achieved parity, holding nearly half of the directorships and earning just about the same as men. But the gap is glaring at big institutions, those with budgets over $15 million: Only 24 percent are led by women, and they make 29 percent less than their male peers.

And just five of the 33 most prominent art museums - those with budgets greater than $20 million - have women at the helm." http://tinyurl.com/q2re4jw

Commentary: You're Doing Targeted Marketing Wrong

New Music Box, 2/26/14

"You want to grow your audience, but you have limited resources, so you target your marketing efforts at the groups most likely to respond to it. Sounds familiar? Sensible? It is. But almost everybody does it wrong, often alienating core customers and defining their offering by the needs of a completely imaginary group of people instead of the community around them."
