Our Yichus

The Maggid of Mezritch was a prominent student of the Baal Shem Tov. When he was a young boy, a fire destroyed his family's home.  Everyone was rescued, but their belongings were destroyed. The young Maggid's mother cried inconsolably as the house burned to the ground.  Her son asked her why she was so sad; after all, everyone was saved. She replied that she wasn't crying for the loss of her material belongings but for the loss of the record of the family pedigree which had been destroyed in the flames. This record traced their familial roots all the way back to King David himself. Rabbi Riskin, in an essay on Parshat Bamidbar, explains that the young Maggid responded to his mother, "Don't cry over that. I will begin a new record for our family pedigree; from me will begin a new yichus. Subsequent generations will trace their lineage back to me."

Although our students all come from great backgrounds and families that they can be proud of, I think that we as parents can also be proud of the "yichus" that our children are creating for us. The learning, religious, academic, and personal growth that our students have undergone over the course of the year should make us all proud. Our families should take pride not only in the yichus that reaches backward but also in the yichus that extends forward.

Thank you to all of our staff members, students, and parents who have created the nurturing and challenging environment that has fostered this yichus.

On a personal note, I want to thank all the WYHS students, parents, staff, and supporters for welcoming me so warmly into the school community. It has been a wonderful first year for me and my family. I look forward to many more years of creating yichus together.

Have a wonderful summer.

Seniors Celebrate
Annual Senior Dinner

Graduation

On Wednesday evening, May 28, the 14th graduating class of WYHS celebrated its graduation with family and friends at Olympic Heights auditorium in Boca Raton.  Well over 600 people attended this special event.  The crowd was privileged to hear from WYHS President Jeffrey Harris, Principal Mrs. Ora Lee Kanner, and Head of School Rabbi Jonathan Kroll.  For the first time at a WYHS graduation, the senior class chose a classmate to deliver an address on behalf of the class. Senior David Ostrofsky did a marvelous job highlighting the great impact the school has had on him after coming from public school.

Following the presentation of diplomas to each of our graduates, the school presented an honorary diploma to outgoing President Jeffrey Harris, recognizing Jeff's tireless efforts on behalf of the school over the past four years.

Seniors Take Atlanta

Article by Yael Skurowitz ('14)

This past week I had the pleasure of joining my classmates on our senior trip to Atlanta, Georgia. This trip was by far the best way to end our amazing four years together at WYHS. We did so many fun activities -- including visiting the Coca-Cola factory, touring one of the largest aquariums in the US, zip-lining through a treetop course, and riding the roller coasters at Six Flags -- each day was jam-packed and so much fun.

Also, this year our trip included a Shabbat, something that not every senior class before us has done. This was very special because it gave us 25 hours of pure bonding time -- no cell phones or technology to interfere! Shabbat began with a beautiful Friday
night davening and culminated with an inspirational kumsitz, our last together as a class.

On behalf of the senior class, I would like to thank Shira Englander, Rabbi Schochet, Rabbi Sugerman, Claudia Cohen, Rabbi Kroll, and Mrs. Kanner for joining us on the trip and making it one that we will never forget. And to the entire WYHS family -- thank you for everything you have done to give us the best and most enjoyable high school experience!
