 New Perspectives

In my remarks at the dinner this past week I referred to a curious pasuk in Sefer Yechezkel which describes the way in which Jews entered and exited the Beit Hamikdash:

"One who enters the Temple through the north gate must exit through the south gate, and one who enters through the south gate must exit through the north."

Why the insistence on this traffic pattern? Shouldn't the focus be on what we do inside the Beit Hamikdash, regardless of which door we use to enter and exit? Rav Yehonatan Eibschutz, in his sefer Yaarot Devash, offers a beautiful insight. The Temple is the center of religious experience and, of course, what happens inside the Temple is of the utmost importance. However, in order to develop a deeper, richer religious understanding, you need to be able to see things from multiple perspectives. If you enter the Beit Hamikdash through the northern gate, challenge yourself with a different perspective by exiting through the southern gate. Familiarity breeds contempt and also complacency. By opening ourselves up to new experiences and fresh perspectives we are better able to develop an attitude of religious growth.

Our dinner honorees are all people who have each in their own way challenged us to see WYHS from a new perspective and helped us reach new heights. As you can see in this edition of Highlites, our students are constantly being challenged to see the world from multiple perspectives and to engage in a variety of new experiences. It has been a terrific year but we're not done yet! I look forward to continue seeing new perspectives that challenge us and help us grow.

Shabbat Shalom,

Divine Dining for Distinguished Honorees
WYHS Annual Journal Dinner

The WYHS Annual Journal Dinner that took place this past Tuesday evening was truly a night to remember.  Close to 200 WYHS supporters gathered together at Bnai Torah Congregation to pay tribute to Jeffrey & Jodi Harris, Dr. David Genet and Rabbi Allan Houben.

Following a delicious buffet dinner, the program took place and was highlighted by video tributes to each of our honorees from members of the school administration, dinner chairs, community leaders and family members, and of course, remarks from the honorees.  We were also honored to hear words of Divrei Torah from Rabbi Brander, Founder of WYHS. Each speaker spoke eloquently about the tremendous contributions our honorees have made to WYHS.

Thank you to the chairs of the event Lisa & Phil Baratz, Laura & Meyer Cohen, Jamie & Menashe Frank, Monica Genet, Sharona & David Kay for a job well done.  Thanks to the many volunteers, and members of the professional staff, most notably Shira Englander for making the dinner a tremendous success.

Oh the Places You'll Go

Five out of five applicants from WYHS to Yeshiva University's highly competitive Honors Program were admitted and received a Distinguished Scholarship.  According to YU Admissions,WYHS was the only school last year that had students accepted to all three Honors Programs (Stern College for Women, Yeshiva College for Men, and Sy Syms School of Business), and WYHS is one of only two schools to do so this year.  Yasher Ko'ach to Ari Mazor, David Ostrofsky, Jared Samilow, Matthew Silkin, and Elyse Tripp on this extraordinary accomplishment.

A Few "Firsts" and other Notable Achievements for the Class of 2014

Freshman Shabbaton
A Special Freshman Shabbat Filled with Friendship, Fun, and Everlasting Memories

Graphic by Bailey Frohlich ('16)
Article by Ayala Broide ('17)

Everyone who partook in the recent Freshmen Shabbaton can agree that it was the highlight of their year! It was kicked off with two exciting activities . While the boys were on their way to Ski Rixen, the girls were on their to go kayaking. After arriving at the Ocean Sky Hotel and Resort and preparing for Shabbat, we started our walk to the nearby chabbad. On Friday night and Shabbat day we enjoyed a beautiful davening services, followed by a delicious meals, some singing, and inspirational divrei Torah by several students. The fun continued in the afternoon where we all got the chance to bond, form new friendships and strengthen old friendships. Through games, food, and just hanging out, we all had a really great time! Without Shira, none of this would have happened, so thank you Shira!
Good Luck Next Year
The Highliters will miss your amazing creativity

Graphic by Simcha Stadlan ('16)

So everyone can feel the "Highlites experience we thought we'd share some

"Rabbi Houben-isms" Here are some typical things that come up when the "Highliters" are creating the Highlites with Photoshop:

"Your face"

 "Wordles",

 "Rabbi Leibtag"

 "Thank Hashem"

 "By the Numbers", "

"We used that 4 years ago"

 "Spotted"

"Wait you forgot that the period needs an inner and outer glow, or maybe just emboss it"

"Boston Red Sox are the best"

"Use the lasso, no the quick select no content aware fill tool...

"No Aaron you can't put in that goat"
"Amir get that airplane and your tiny signature out of there"

"Justin, stop putting 'Easter eggs' in the banner"

Stadlan (applying to Simcha or Josh) Daniel and Avi, no penquin"

"Take luck and care"

"The issue is...."

Rabbi Houben, what can we say. The Highlites will not be the same without you and you are an incredibly creative person with a wonderful attention to detail. We will miss you...
