 | Atascadero Library Staff were honored recently for dedication and professionalism during a year of change and new beginnings.
SLO County Supervisor Debbie Arnold, pictured above, and Friends of the Atascadero Library hosted a holiday brunch to thank Library staff for a job well done during the past year's relocation to the new facility, recognizing an amazing accomplishment by a dedicated team! Supervisor Arnold and former supervisor Jim Patterson (an early champion of the Library's expansion) were on hand to salute all those who made the transition smooth and professional including Director of Library Services Chris Barnickle, Librarian Joe Laurenzi and staff.
Thanks to Debbie Arnold and her staff for contributions to the event and their support of the new Library along with fabulous food, flowers and a wonderful event provided by Claudia Collier, Linda Zirk, Susie Blackwell and Grenda Ernst of FOAL. Good job everyone! |

In addition, Board President Robert Alberti presented a special "Golden Guppy Award" to the staff

A new year begins -- traditionally the time to reflect on the year past and to imagine the 12 months to come. And what a year was 2014 for Friends of the Atascadero Library!
"Dancing With Our Stars" was an SRO smash hit - again! ... major donors to the expansion campaign were treated to a spectacular performance at the Galaxy Theater by the Salome Chamber Orchestra ... our Morro Road library closed after more than 30 years ... the Capistrano Avenue building was completed ... the library's resources and furnishings were carefully packed, stacked and tracked from Morro Road to Capistrano ... the community celebrated with a Sneak Peek and a Grand Opening ... a series of beautiful and popular art exhibits began in the new facility ... library hours were expanded (countywide) ... library traffic and circulation increased more than 25% ...

Dear Friends,
I would like to dedicate this month's article to the staff of the Atascadero Library. In all of this year, with our new building and our new hours, free holds, our fall Climate Change exploration, and the FOAL's big parade win, it is easy to forget the day-to-day work that goes into making the library what is each and every day. So let me just take the time to tell you a little something about the staff.
Most of you know Joan Bloomfield and Brian Coburn, our Youth Services and Adult Services librarians respectively. They have been working hard to make the new space the most it can be for Atascadero. Both Joan and Brian are creating more dynamic programming for Atascadero Library that includes two new storytimes and new robust adult programming schedule with the very popular weekly event "Find Out Fridays."
Gordon Peterson steers what has become an much larger ship. He is in charge of our increased circulation which is up 16% from last year. With our new hours, Gordon keeps a constant eye on the schedule making sure that our staff are ready and trained to serve the public.

Library Art Exhibits
Julie Dunn's exhibit of tempera batiks continues through January.
In February and March, the library will exhibit original art related to the theme "A Sense of Identity."
A reception will be held on Thursday, February 5, from 5:30-7 p.m., to meet the artists who have been selected for this exhibit. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is welcome to attend.
The library will host other programs on this theme--which honors Black History Month (February) and Women's History Month (March).

New FOAL member scores tickets!
Sandy Hopper became a member of the Friends of the Atascadero Library during our membership drive in October, which was held in conjunction with National Friends of the Library Week. The names of everyone who became a member during the drive were entered in a drawing for two tickets to the 2015 production of Dancing With Our Stars. The winning lottery ticket was selected during the November FOAL Board meeting and Sandy was the lucky new member. Sandy is a semi-retired interior decorator who has lived in Atascadero for 30 years and while this is the first time she has joined the FOAL, she says she uses the library regularly. She and her husband Steve will be enjoying the Saturday evening DWOS show.
