Every year in June Radical Joy for Hard Times presents the Global Earth Exchange, a day when people all over the world go to a wounded place they care about, share their stories of what the place means to them, get to know it as it is now, and make a simple act of beauty--usually a bird made of materials the place itself provides.

The 2016 Global Earth Exchange will be June 18. Starting next month you'll be able to sign up on our website. In the meantime, to offer you ideas for the limitless ways in which this beautiful and meaningful event can unfold, Radical Joy Revealed will feature one story a month about how and where others have done their Global Earth Exchanges.

This month's story comes from Shea Armstrong, Kauai, Hawaii, who did her event on behalf of the endangered ocean and sea birds:

We offered our Global Earth Exchange on behalf of the ocean and seabirds that are increasingly at risk. As endangered species biologists we often witness first hand the impacts humans have on wildlife and ecosystems. Our Radical Joy Bird spontaneously took on the shape of a seabird, which in Kauai is tied to both the ocean for food and the mountains for reproducing.
We built our bird on the tide line so the ocean would reclaim it. In this way our impermanent offering reflected the nature of accepting the challenges as they are and taking action in our own ways to contribute to helping life thrive. Having the opportunity to pause, reflect, and appreciate the ocean and birds is not often possible when doing our field work. We left the day feeling grateful for the opportunity to give back with artistic expression and mindful attention.
