On Saturday September 12 Radical Joy for Hard Times sponsored The Ground Beneath Our Hearts, when ten communities around the world that face mineral extraction showed through art and music not just how they suffer but how much they love their home place.

For some the idea that art could be a form of activism was at first a challenge. However, in the course of deciding what they could do together, and then doing it with the knowledge that other communities were offering events of their own on the same day was a profoundly meaningful and transformative experience.

As our partner from the indigenous Huitoto community in the Colombian Amazon said after their event, the revival of a traditional dance, "Some students have left school to work in the mines, more concerned with western knowledge than ancestral knowledge. This activity was a way to revitalize culture, because the kids were interested in learning the songs, going to the mountain to get bark to make a costume, weaving it, and learning the importance of what it means to do a dance."
