Some days everything goes wrong. Your alarm doesn't ring, the car won't start, you're late for a meeting, you have a disagreement with a colleague, you lose an earring or break a shoelace... and when you get home your loved one fails to appreciate how miserably life is treating you.

In her book Traveling Mercies Anne LaMott relates this story from the medical intuitive Carolyn Myss. When Myss was in Russia to give a series of lectures, she kept running into one obstacle after another. Flights were canceled, her hotel room was given to someone else, she missed connections. She tried to be cheerful, but on a train one morning, she just couldn't help complaining to the man sitting next to her.

It turned out that the man worked for the Dalai Lama. LaMott goes on: "And he said--gently--that they believe when a lot of things start going wrong all at once, it is to protect something big and lovely that is trying to get itself born--and that this something needs for you to be distracted so that it can be born as perfectly as possible."

The next time you have a bad day or run into a swath of hard times, take a deep breath and remember to stay open, so you'll recognize that big and lovely thing when it's ready to present itself to you.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.
