Joy Instead

Vandana Shiva, the fiery, inspiring Indian activist who tirelessly fights genetically-modified crops and the corporatization of small communities, has written: "We need to wake up to the problems in the world and yet not get overwhelmed by the magnitude of them... not suffer in our activism, but instead find joy in what we are doing to help ameliorate the global problems."

The Earth needs passionate activists: people who are willing to march to the White House to protest fracking, take up residence in giant redwoods slated for cutting, educate about climate change, and take other courageous actions on behalf of places and species they love.

Sometimes environmental activists tell members of Radical Joy for Hard Times that they're too busy to take time finding and making beauty in wounded places. We invite them to reconsider.

In the midst of their work, activists might gather together and share the rewards and frustrations of their work. They might spend a few minutes walking or sitting quietly at the wounded place to which they have given their passion and activism, get to know it as it is now and see if they can find some beauty there. And it's always empowering, exciting, and even joyful to make a gift of beauty for a wounded place in recognition of what the place has given abundantly and may not be able to give anymore.

Together RadJoy and activism can change the world and change the way we live in the world we can't change.
